Hei.

Removal of statements[edit]

Hey! I realised that you were removing lots of statements for the properties follows (P155) and followed by (P156) when used for persons, but you are not replacing them with the properties replaces (P1365) or replaced by (P1366). Could you please do this operation properly so no data is lost? Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 20:06, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

@Andreasmperu: Hi, the thing is that these properties used in the way they are are worthless. When a person has the property "previous" or "next" pointing to another person, what does that mean? Previous what? Previous king? Previous crown prince? Previous leader of something? Previous person to exist? Previous person to win something? All of these values were erroneously imported from infoboxes (of all the random samples I've taken, all were added last March by UnderlyingBot), and make no sense. They should not have been created in the first place, so I feel that removing them without replacing them is not really doing it "improperly", but just fixing a past mistake.
Of course, information about who had which position held (P39) before and after the subject (replaces (P1365) and replaced by (P1366)) is important and deserves to be done properly with qualifiers, but there's no efficient way off doing that while I'm fixing the first issue (removing erroneously added follows (P155) and followed by (P156)).
Do you see where I'm coming from here? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:34, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
So, you did know about replaces (P1365) or replaced by (P1366) and still decided not to use them (I was hoping you were unaware of this). There is a consensus about not removing statements without adding that information with other properties. Deprecated property no label (P107) has not been deleted because there are still items using it. What you are doing is leading to an easily preventable loss of data. Please, stop deleting statements without using other properties to preserve that information (by the way, if something makes no sense to you, it does not mean that other people have to agree. We can all be wrong from time to time). So, before starting mass edits on a sole purpose, it is always a good idea to see what other people have to say about it. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 21:03, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
@Andreasmperu: Sure, I understand your objection and won't remove any more. A list of the removals I did is here, the top ~500 or so.
Like I've said, these properties were added erroneously and I don't agree that we shouldn't just remove them, I'll leave it for now. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 17:11, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia translate page[edit]

Hi Jon! I don't know if it's correct but I would like to translate in english (it's already done) an italian page I made in Wikipedia. I've understood that I need to do it here. Is it correct? Tnank you for helping me! --Juliopm (talk) 13:16, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Juliopm! I am not sure what you mean. Do you wish to add an article to the English Wikipedia, or to connect a page in the Italian Wikipedia with a page in the English one? Wikidata is used for the last part, the so-called interwiki links between languages. To add a link from the Italian Wikipedia to the English Wikipedia (and vice versa), just go to that article in the Italian Wikipedia and click "Aggiungi collegamenti" in the sidebar to the left, and follow the instructions. To add an article to the English Wikipedia, you can see here (it's mostly the same procedure as in the Italian Wikipedia, I think). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:34, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, Jon, for your answer. You have understood well, I would like to "to connect a page in the Italian Wikipedia (that I have already created, Renato Signorini) with a page in the English one" that has to be created. But where I had to write the english page? Should I create a new page in english in en.wikipedia and then connect it clicking "Aggiungi collegamenti" in the italian page I've already created? After clicking "Aggiungi collegamenti" there are no instructions, apart the "language" and the "link" to the english page. But the question is: where can I create the english page in order than to collect it to the italian one?--Juliopm (talk) 15:16, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

@Juliopm: OK yeah, to create an article in the English Wikipedia you would do it the same way is in Italian -- go to the article's name (for example en:Francesco Chiaffredo Marini), click "Create source" and start writing. However, I know the English Wikipedia used to have a restriction saying that new accounts can't create new articles; if they still have that restriction, you must create a draft article (for example en:Draft:Francesco Chiaffredo Marini), and an experienced editor will move it to the "main namespace" when it's ready. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:23, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you Jon! Finally I've understood and every thing is clear! --Juliopm (talk) 15:27, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

That's good to hear, Juliopm! If there's anything else just ask. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:28, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Just a note to let you know that I have restored and added references to Q14954461. Also to note that it was notable at the time of deletion. ·addshore· talk to me! 17:44, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

@Addshore: Eh, I don't really see why this is notable. Just because it had some statements? This is saying that anyone can have an item as long as the Wikipedia article it came from isn't deleted right away...? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 18:16, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
It has referenced statements. And no, it does not mean that anyone can have an item, the face that it is notable has nothing to do with Wikipedia! ·addshore· talk to me! 00:08, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello, how can I merge the both pages? I don't know. It's about a template on Prva HNL top scorers, but I haven't managed to merge them. Could yopu help me, please? Cordially. --FCNantes72 (talk) 12:37, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

@FCNantes72: ✓ Done. The easiest way to merge is to use the Merge.js gadget (Settings » Gadgets), which will give you a link to merge in the dropdown menu next to "Search". You can also use Special:MergeItems, but that is more cumbersome.

Mvh. --Wikijens (talk) 11:04, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

@Wikijens: Ikke noe stress, hehe.

Thank you for thanking me but it's not necessary :)))[edit]

Hi, In Russian Wikipedia, we use the information from Wikidata quite actively. But because not all of the WD items (to put it mildly :))) have Russian labels, we have a number of articles with Q-codes. These articles are grouped in a special category, and me and some of my colleagues move through this category and type Russian labels. So, this is a systematic work that I do for the sake of the interaction between WD and WP and not for kudos :))) --Michgrig (talk) 16:53, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

@Michgrig: Very nice. I've noticed a lot of Russian labels on items I created, from several users, so I assumed that was the case. It is interesting to see such a wide-spread use of Wikidata in Wikipedia, do you have any links to pages with examples and/or policies regarding how it is used (it's OK if they're in Russian, I can make it work with Google Translate)? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:05, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
We don't have any policies concerning this interaction, or I don't remember them. We have several infobox templates that take the information from Wikidata, for example, ru:Шаблон:Персона and others in category ru:Категория:Википедия:Шаблоны, использующие Викиданные. If an item that is taken from here does not have the Russian label, it is displayed as Qxxx in an article. The above category for such Q-ed articles is ru:Категория:Википедия:Статьи со ссылками на элементы Викиданных без русской подписи. Some of our colleagues are very unhappy (again, to put it mildly :))) about this 'vandalization' of articles and about Wikidata in gerenal. But several of us (who are often called 'Wikidata disciples') just try to overcome the situation. --Michgrig (talk) 11:17, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
Ah, I was wondering how it came that items I create get Russian labels so quickly. Good work. --- Jura 07:21, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Jon Harald Søby, could you please check my proposal which IMHO has been archived by you by mistake. I answered done only to a proposal. Further more we should create a more general proposal also for awards which are granted every n years e.g.Jerg-Ratgeb Prize (Q1687646) granted every 4 years, see this headline. Thank you--Oursana (talk) 13:37, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

@Oursana: You're right, I was a bit too hasty there. Since the proposal is so old, do you think it would be a good idea to just start a new one (referencing the old one, of course), or should we bring the old one back? Bjarne Øen Beskjeftigelse / Verv[edit]

God morgen.

mvh --Pmt (talk) 05:45, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Mvh.--Anne-Sophie Ofrim (talk) 21:02, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Gadget export[edit]

I want to download the Gadget export so I can update labels on items. I need help. I clicked download but I'm still missing something. Kkjj (talk) 12:32, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Kkjj, I haven't used this before. Can you give me a link to where you've found it? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:19, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

newbie question[edit]

Hell yes, I have questions. Thanks for asking! Here goes: There seem to be two established ways to link to things on Wikimedia Commons: With a "statement" (e.g. "Commons category") and with a link under "Other sites". So - I'm confused. What is for what here, exactly?--Flugaal (talk) 15:21, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Flugaal, to be honest I'm not sure myself. The statement was created before using a sitelink was possible, so it might just be a remnant. The major difference between them AFAIK is that it's possible to have multiple statements, whereas it's only possible to use one sitelink, though I'm having a hard time imagining useful usecases for that. So I think using a sitelink is the best option. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:23, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Sometimes there's a commons category as well as a gallery page for the topic. So i was tending towards the statements as the more specific thing...--Flugaal (talk) 15:55, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Maybe Help:Sitelinks says that those are for interwiki linking? So maybe we need both, because we don't do interwiki linking by some standard on what to link in what case, which can be done automatically based on some systematically organized data, but instead we explicitly link some pages based on whatever someone feels to be an appropriate reasoning?--Flugaal (talk) 16:08, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Yes, that's another thing: sitelinks are used for interwikis, but the statement can't be used for that. I think maybe you can ask this question in Wikidata:Project chat, there are sensible people there who can give better answers than I can to this question. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 16:15, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

What are the differences between wikipedia and wikidata ? if I edit on wikipedia then automatically appears on wikidata also ??--Alexiulian25 (talk) 18:36, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Alexiulian25! Wikipedia and Wikidata are separate projects, but they are closely connected. Wikipedia uses Wikidata to sort out all of the language links between articles. Because of this, certain edits you make in Wikipedia will automatically appear in Wikidata as well. For example, when you move a page from one name to another, that needs to be updated in Wikidata (so the language links will be correct in other languages), so that edit gets made automatically.
In addition to this, there is a whole lot of other stuff to do in Wikidata; you can maybe get an idea by checking out Wikidata:Introduction. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 18:42, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Wikidata:The Game/Flagged items[edit]

Great job! Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 10:33, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, Sjoerddebruin! Though DavidMar86hdf deserves even more credit, he's been working on that page much longer than I did, but over a longer period of time, so it's not that easy to spot. Anyways, now that it's at a managable level, I think keeping it at/around zero should be much easier. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:24, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Flemish - Dutch[edit]

It is perfectly correct to call them Flemish because Flemish is a nationality, not a citizenship of state, but the definition in wiki data is 'nationality' not 'citizenship' so Flemish is perfectly okay and is also a definition allowed by wikidata.

It is completely wrong to call them Dutch (citizens of the Netherlands with the current Dutch flag) as they never were. I think my solution is better than yours because it is clearly wrong. Caravaggista (talk)

@Caravaggista: See, this is one problem with the multilingual nature of Wikidata – in Norwegian the property country of citizenship (P27) is called "statsborgerskap (land)", which specifies "citizenship (country)". The English name is also "country of citizenship". So yes, I agree they should not be called citizens of the Netherlands, but they can also not be citizens of Flemish people (Q242485), since that one by no means is a country. The Dutch name of the property seems to imply the same thing, since aliases of the name ("land van nationaliteit") are "staatsburger", etc. So I agree a solution needs to be found, but the way you have done it is not the right one in my opinion. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:43, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
But your solution is wrong because they are and never were Dutch or from the Netherlands but they were Flemish and are called Flemish generally in English. They never were from the country called the Netherlands because the Netherlands broke away from what became the Flemish part which includes Antwerp etc. I find it very strange that a Flemish person has to be called a citizen of a country he was never a part of because the Norwegian language cannot distinguish between citizenship and nationality. It is like saying that Norwegians should be called Danish on wikidata because Swahili has no word for Norwegian but only for Danish. Caravaggista (talk)
@Caravaggista: Exactly, I'm not saying we should call them Dutch either. Like I said on your talk page, it may be better to remove the claim entirely, or find a more fitting one. The edits I reverted, I did without looking carefully enough (sorry about that), so I thought you were changing contemporary people's citizenship, not "old" people. I'm just saying that using country of citizenship (P27) at all for these items is probably not the best course of action. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:57, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
What would you say if the page for Henrik Ibsen would state:
nationality: Swedish Flag of Sweden.svg
I agree it might be better not to have a nationality in some cases, but then some person will come in and add the wrong thing. Please note that is is possible to have a Palestinian nationality for Yasser Arafat although there is also no Palestinian country (yet). My solution is better since Flemish people are not Dutch as much as they are not German, French, Danish or Norwegian. So there is no reason in the case of Flemish people to put the nationality as "the Netherlands" with the Dutch flag. So I will continue to make these changes as it is absurd to keep the nationality as the Netherlands. Caravaggista (talk)
@Caravaggista: Sure, you can change them to the one you were using until we have a better solution; at least that way it will be easier to fix everything at once later on. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:37, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Isn't it better to use ethnic group (P172) and remove country of citizenship (P27)? Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 11:07, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #180[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that for all the IPA (P898)'s you've been adding, you've been using apostrophes ('), but the constraints require that ˈ (U+02C8 Modifier Letter Vertical Line) be used instead. I'm dealing with the ones that already exist, just thought you should know for future reference. Popcorndude (talk) 13:24, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

@Popcorndude: Ah, shit. Another thing to copypaste instead of just using the keyboard… Thanks for fixing them, thatˈs awesome (see what I did there?). Will use the right one from now on. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:04, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Wikidata for Maxwell's equations[edit]

Hi Jon.
Maybe you can help me with a small problem. When I look at "Maxwell's equations" on en-wiki there is a wikidata link to the danish article "Maxwells ligninger". But there is no interwiki on this article and when I try to create a link with wikidata, there is an error. What is the fault and how can I correct it.
Kind regards Savfisk (talk) 20:03, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

@Savfisk: It all looks all right to me. Are you still having this problem? Try appending ?action=purge to the end of the URL of the Danish article. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:53, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi Jon. It looks fine to me also. I tried many things yesterday, but maybe it was just bug in my browser (firefox). I learnt that now. Sorry to disturb you, and thanks for your quick answer. Kind regards Savfisk (talk) 16:22, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
@Savfisk: No probs, glad it's ok. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 17:01, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Soccerway ID[edit]

Hi, can you make your bot check if the soccerway profile is reachable before you add the ID? It is obviously adding wrong IDs such as [5] or [6]. A short check for the HTTP status code before adding the ID would be very helpful. Thanks, Yellowcard (talk) 19:16, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

@Yellowcard: Well, doing it before it adds it adds a layer of complexity. I'm not saying it's not doable, but I prefer to do it like this because it hightlights problems that already exist in the templates the bot imports the values from. If we don't add them to Wikidata there will be no entry for it in the constraint violation report, and therefore no indicator that something was wrong in Wikipedia. This way we can fix it in Wikipedia as well if desired. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 19:23, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
