Content[edit]

2023-10-18T16:03:58 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> weā€™ll start off by sharing all the exciting news currently happening around the development side of Wikidata & Wikibase
2023-10-18T16:04:09 <Ifeatu> <animation,document>
2023-10-18T16:04:15 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> then weā€™ll also share a bit on other cool non-dev things happening on Wikidata/Wikibase
2023-10-18T16:04:27 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Then in the last part of the presentation, we will present what's coming next for Wikidata & Wikibase this qurter
2023-10-18T16:04:46 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> in the course of the presentations youā€™re welcome to ask us questions and weā€™ll try to answer them simultaneously
2023-10-18T16:04:58 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> we can have more discussions and Q&A at they end if thereā€™s more time
2023-10-18T16:05:06 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> So, letā€™s get down to business
2023-10-18T16:05:21 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Weā€™ll kick off with a presentation from @nightrose on the latest happenings around Wikidata
2023-10-18T16:05:32 <Lydia Pintscher> Hey everyone!Ā :)
2023-10-18T16:05:47 <Lydia Pintscher> There's been a lot going on around Wikidata development. I'll focus on some highlights:
2023-10-18T16:06:28 <Lydia Pintscher> We've continued to improve EntitySchemas, especially around how they are shown in listings like recent changes. We're still working on refining the datatype to link to them in statements.
2023-10-18T16:06:58 <Lydia Pintscher> Now if you're thinking wth are EntitySchemas then I'd love for you to join us at the Data Modeling Days that are coming at the end of November. More about them later.
2023-10-18T16:07:39 <Lydia Pintscher> We've also worked on making the Mismatch Finder more useful. Specifically you can now switch the language and you'll soon be able to use it for mismatches on qualifiers, not just the main part of the statement.
2023-10-18T16:08:31 <Lydia Pintscher> The mul language code saga continues as well of course. Specifically we've worked on showing more fallbacks in the termbox, which will be important to not have people be confused why labels etc are missing for something.
2023-10-18T16:09:00 <Lydia Pintscher> We've also continued to expand the new Wikibase REST API. It can now do operations on Properties and not just Items.
2023-10-18T16:09:52 <Lydia Pintscher> We've also given some love to lexicographical data. Specifically the indicators for hwat is required input on Special:NewLexeme should now be less weird and confusing.
2023-10-18T16:10:13 <Lydia Pintscher> We've also fixed an issue where Lexeme pages were not showing styles and missed edit links for example.
2023-10-18T16:12:02 <Lydia Pintscher> And last but not least there are two things happening in the larger Wikimedia world that we are adapting to. One of them is the upcoming IP masking to stop leaking IPs publicly. We have some work to do to handle this in Wikibase and we investigated where all those places are. And the other thing is the move from ORES to LiftWing that is happening in the machine learning team. We have a few tools like the Item Quality Evaluator that needed some love to work with the new system.
2023-10-18T16:12:16 <Lydia Pintscher> And with that I'm handing over to Jon for some Suite love!
2023-10-18T16:12:32 <Jon Amar> thanks Lydia :D
2023-10-18T16:12:34 <Jon Amar> Heya from the Suite crew! šŸ¬šŸ«
2023-10-18T16:12:58 <Jon Amar> Lot's of nice highlights for you from the past few months
2023-10-18T16:13:38 <Jon Amar> We welcomed and onboarded the final engineer to our group of four. šŸŽŠ
2023-10-18T16:14:10 <Jon Amar> We also started hiring process for the Wikibase (Suite and Cloud focused) developer advocate šŸ„‘
2023-10-18T16:14:36 <Jon Amar> https://wikimedia-deutschland.softgarden.io/job/35654476/Developer-Advocate-m-f-d-/?jobDbPVId=92159911&l=de
2023-10-18T16:14:45 <Jon Amar> that's the link for the job post.
2023-10-18T16:14:59 <Jon Amar> if you or someone you know is interested please apply or reach out to me for more information. A familiarity with the community would be a huge win for all of us.
2023-10-18T16:15:55 <Jon Amar> on the sitting down in front of computer and typing code in side of the engineering work...
2023-10-18T16:16:14 <Jon Amar> Weā€™ve been tackling our versioning scheme, so that name of the versions retain insights about what is in there (e.g. breaking changes, security releases, etc).
2023-10-18T16:16:40 <Jon Amar> This should make navigating updates and knowing which ones are relevant to you more transparent in future
2023-10-18T16:17:13 <Jon Amar> And our main focus has been on improving and updating our test infrastructure. Weā€™ve made huge progress here and itā€™s a much needed effort to improve the reliability of our releases and the speed at which we can accomplish those releases.
2023-10-18T16:18:23 <Jon Amar> Which brings us our (single and yet ironic) low light.
2023-10-18T16:18:46 <Jon Amar> You may have noticed that weā€™re behind on Mediawiki parity releases .. this is due to issues with testing.
2023-10-18T16:18:58 <Jon Amar> Two things are contributing here:
2023-10-18T16:19:26 <Jon Amar> we decided to take a long view in investing in the infrastructure which will make creating releases more efficient in the long run (instead of pushing to just ā€˜get the next one outā€™). so this happens a bit behind the scenes and doesnt pay instant dividends
2023-10-18T16:19:53 <Jon Amar> Secondly, a proof of the value of investing in automated testing, is that the remaining manual tests which are part of our release process are currently failing. šŸ˜¢ Weā€™re unpacking why and will be automating where we can.
2023-10-18T16:20:00 <Jon Amar> Know that the 1.40 release and the interim security fixes are being actively worked on our end.
2023-10-18T16:20:39 <Jon Amar> On to Evelien for Wikibase Cloud. Go EvelienĀ !
2023-10-18T16:20:59 <Evelien> Thanks JonĀ :) Hi folks!
2023-10-18T16:21:40 <Evelien> We had some big releases with Wikibase Cloud this quarter, with the discovery tool (https://www.wikibase.cloud/discovery) going live as well as moving forward from a private to an open beta
2023-10-18T16:22:26 <Evelien> The discovery tool enables people to explore other instances hosted on Wikibase Cloud, and will hopefully inspire newcomers to try it out themselves with some handy examples of how others modeled their data
2023-10-18T16:23:22 <Evelien> The open beta involved quite a lot of guardrails to protect the platform from falling over, and weā€™re happy to see this holding up perfectly since release. Weā€™ve also had a big increase in newcomers trying out Wikibase Cloud (60+ where we usually saw about 10-20 per month) since the release, which is what we aimed and hoped for šŸŽ‰
2023-10-18T16:24:20 <Evelien> Next to this, weā€™ve made more progress with improving our infrastructure. First by moving to a newer version of ElasticSearch to enhance stability. Second by improving monitoring on our databases and ensuring availability and scalability by preventing resource exhaustion
2023-10-18T16:25:05 <Evelien> Finally, we worked on issues reported by the community, such as admin users sometimes not being created for new Wikibases and investigating solutions for the spam accounts being created on Wikibases
2023-10-18T16:25:36 <Evelien> That's it from Wikibase Cloud for last quarter. Back to Mohammed
2023-10-18T16:26:01 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Great, now letā€™s take a quick look at some other cool things happening in the Wikidata & Wikibase communities
2023-10-18T16:26:09 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> first, around the Wikidata community:
2023-10-18T16:26:21 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> We saw 4 admin requests made on Wikidata and 3 of them were successful
2023-10-18T16:26:32 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Welcome onboard @Yahya, @FlyingAce, @Saroj, and thanks for picking up the mop \o/
2023-10-18T16:26:54 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> ew also saw 10 bot requests to run a variety of tasks. 4 of them were approved. To the editors and the people running these bots to make WIkidata better, youā€™re awesome <3
2023-10-18T16:27:24 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> @menyo, whom many of you may already know User:Biyanto Rebin (WMDE) joined us in the communications team on a short internship
2023-10-18T16:27:35 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> heā€™s researching how communities build good policies to support under-resourced languages in the digital world. In case he reaches out to you, please be niceĀ :)
2023-10-18T16:27:54 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> many Wikidata-related events happened around the world. We participated in some of them
2023-10-18T16:28:17 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> We were at Wikimania and met a few of you. Many thanks to all those who organised sessions or meetups related to Wikidata
2023-10-18T16:28:25 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> You can revisit the event and see the recorded sessions here

2023-10-18T16:29:43 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Many thanks to @Omorodion and the local chapter in Nigeria for putting the workshops together
2023-10-18T16:30:30 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> We also attended the Wikidata days in Lisbon and met a few of you including long-term editors @EpƬdosis and @IsmaelOlea --> https://wikidatadays.wikimedia.pt/
2023-10-18T16:30:52 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Many thanks to the organisers for putting up a great event
2023-10-18T16:31:10 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> As many of you might have heard, this October, Wikidata is 11 years old and WikidataCon is just around the corner
2023-10-18T16:31:25 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> The conference will be a hybrid event with the onsite part happening in Taiwan Wikidata:WikidataCon 2023 on 28-29 October 2023
2023-10-18T16:31:49 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> The schedule is already available Wikidata:WikidataCon 2023/Program
2023-10-18T16:32:07 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> We hope to see many of you also organise birthday events or WikidataCon satellite events on the side, withing your local community or in your area. If you plan to do so, add it here so we know about it Wikidata:Eleventh Birthday/Events
2023-10-18T16:32:17 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> As you all will agree, we canā€™t have a birthday without presentsĀ :)
2023-10-18T16:32:37 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> so one of our traditions is to prepare birthday presents to the community. Now is a great time to start preparing yours! Feel free to add it here Wikidata:Eleventh Birthday/Presents
2023-10-18T16:33:11 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Between novvember 30 and December 2 weā€™re back with another edition of XXX Days Wikidata:Events/Data Modelling Days 2023
2023-10-18T16:33:45 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> During those 3 days weā€™ll focus on how we describe and organize data on Wikidata
2023-10-18T16:33:58 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> thereā€™ll be workshops and social events covering the modeling challenges and other tricky cases
2023-10-18T16:34:38 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> if youā€™d like to propose a session or suggest topics and speakers, you can have a look at the template on the talk page Wikidata talk:Events/Data Modelling Days 2023
2023-10-18T16:35:18 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> some new tools got built, as well as old tools that got increased attention this quarter that you might not have heard of yet:
2023-10-18T16:35:38 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Images near Items (https://wikidata-todo.toolforge.org/images_near_items.php?) --> helps to find Wikimedia Commons images near Wikidata items without an image. It can load a category tree of Commons images with coordinates, and then find Wikidata items of a certain P31 with coordinates but without images
2023-10-18T16:35:56 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Everything is connected (https://everythingisconnected.toolforge.org/) --> is a knowledge-based puzzle game where players must fit square pieces representing entities in the world together based on their known connections
2023-10-18T16:36:25 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> https://aletheiafact.org/ --> is a new fact-checking website using Wikidata for people/concept identification. The website allows users to contribute to fact-checking claims made by public figures, such as politicians, celebrities, and influencers
2023-10-18T16:36:45 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> ...as well as some userscripts that could be helpful for you
2023-10-18T16:37:04 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> User:Nikki/ChecksumCheck.js --> displays a symbol after external identifiers that contain checksums, to indicate whether the checksum in the identifier is correct. Currently only supporting a small number of Identifiers
2023-10-18T16:37:21 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> User:Luca.favorido/linkypop.js --> this script can be used to search for an identifier on an external site. It provides a button to search for an identifier as soon as you type it in the property input field. For example, if you type ā€œORCIDā€, an icon with a lens will appear, and when you click it, a new tab will open with the ORCID site looking for the name of the researcher. You can then copy the URL and paste it to Wikidata
2023-10-18T16:37:39 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> User:Sanqui/referenceurl.js --> this userscript will add a button to add a reference which immediately suggests P854
2023-10-18T16:37:50 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> During the past quarter, many new WikiProjects were started. among those started were:
2023-10-18T16:38:10 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Wikidata:WikiProject African Literary Metadata --> a project dedicated to create and improve Wikidata's coverage of African informal literature
2023-10-18T16:38:29 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Wikidata:WikiProject Lodging --> aims at creating, improving, and organizing Wikidata items related to lodging; such as hotels, motels, inns, guest houses and lodging-related topics
2023-10-18T16:38:51 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> [[Wikidata:WikiProject Nollywood] --> this WikiProject focuses on adding and enhancing items in Wikidata for Nollywood (Nigerian films), primarily produced and collected from 1990-2000
2023-10-18T16:38:56 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> WikiProjects are great places to collaborate with others on a specific topic to improve Wikidata
2023-10-18T16:39:02 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Check them out here Wikidata:WikiProjects
2023-10-18T16:39:19 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> ā€¦and donā€™t forget to add new ones to the Wikidata Weekly summary so others can find them and join in on the fun!
2023-10-18T16:39:31 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> And finally, here are a few interesting things to read and watch in different languages:

2023-10-18T16:41:49 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> @Benny_Danjerfield, what other non-dev things happened around Wikidata in the past quarterr?
2023-10-18T16:41:59 <Danny Benjafield> Thanks Mohammed!
2023-10-18T16:42:29 <Danny Benjafield> We attended WikiCon in Linz, AT (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiCon_2023).
It was a great experience to attend a number of sessions with themes across the Wiki-spectrum.

We made some valuable connections and gained many insights on how Wikidata is currently being used within Wikimedia projects.
2023-10-18T16:43:23 <Danny Benjafield> We now have a Wikidata for Wikimedia projects page!
Read about what we are doing and please tell us about your issues integrating Wikidata to another Wikimedia Project:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WD4WMP
2023-10-18T16:44:18 <Danny Benjafield> What else have we been upto...

We conducted our first Community-member interviews and we are eager for more!
Please consider registering your interest for a video-call interview at our sign-up form:
https://wikimedia.sslsurvey.de/Wikidata-for-Wikimedia-Interviews
2023-10-18T16:45:13 <Danny Benjafield> And finally for this round of Office Hour:
We will attend WikidataCon, (virtually). Please come find us on GatherTown and have a chat, we'd love to speak with yoyu!
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikidataCon_2023
2023-10-18T16:45:43 <Danny Benjafield> So I'll wrap this up and pass it on now to Valerie!

Valerie, what do you have for us...
2023-10-18T16:45:52 <Valerie WMDE> Hello everyoneĀ :)
2023-10-18T16:46:18 <Valerie WMDE> I will tell you a little bit on what has been going on on the non-dev side of WIkibase
2023-10-18T16:46:57 <Valerie WMDE> some of you joined our last Live Session. There we discussed our new features and got into some nice convosĀ :) have a look at our notes if you want to learn more: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/P/WBUG_2023_09_28
2023-10-18T16:48:13 <Valerie WMDE> apart from that, Christos and I visited ICOM (International Council of Museums) conference. It was great to meet folks from other chapters there and speak to museum enthusiasts and professionals! You can read more about our collaboration here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_at_the_20th_ICOM-CC_Triennial_Conference/ICOM
2023-10-18T16:49:10 <Valerie WMDE> We also updated our logos! That has been a longer process with some hick-ups. We will make a proper announcement with why and what and where in the coming days. If you want to make any use of the logos, you can find them here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikibase_Logo_%E2%80%93_symbol.svg
2023-10-18T16:49:41 <Valerie WMDE> there are two community contributions that I wanted to share as well
2023-10-18T16:50:37 <Valerie WMDE> one of them is 'WIkibase resources'. a collection of educational material, curated by KB, the national library of the Netherlands. You'll find it here: https://github.com/KBNLwikimedia/Wikibase-resources
2023-10-18T16:52:19 <Valerie WMDE> Another community member attended LDK conference (Conference on Language, Data and Knowledge) and gave a workshop on lexical data and Wikibase. Their presentation and the additional materials can be found here https://wikibase-lex.sciencesconf.org/
2023-10-18T16:52:49 <Valerie WMDE> On another note: Suite hired a User Experience Reseracher, theyā€™ll be starting in mid November. Big win to better understand your needs and how best we can evolve Suite to better serve them!
2023-10-18T16:53:21 <Valerie WMDE> That's it from my sideĀ :)
2023-10-18T16:53:36 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Now let's shift our focus back to development updates for Wikidata and wikibase
2023-10-18T16:53:45 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Beginning with Wikidata, what's on the horizon for the next quarter? @nightrose
2023-10-18T16:53:59 <Lydia Pintscher> Yes! Next quarter:
2023-10-18T16:54:15 <Lydia Pintscher> We'll continue working on improving EntitySchemas.
2023-10-18T16:54:44 <Lydia Pintscher> We will also be doing some usability testing for the new mul language code and related language fallbacks. If you're up for joining that please let Mohammed know.
2023-10-18T16:55:17 <Lydia Pintscher> Then we'll start looking into how we can technically improve the Item UI but that is in very early stages still.
2023-10-18T16:56:24 <Lydia Pintscher> The search team at the WMF will do work on testing out how we can split all of Wikidata's data in more than one Blazegraph instance as a next step towards improving the Query Service stability. You can read more details about that here: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:SPARQL_query_service/WDQS_backend_update/October_2023_scaling_update
2023-10-18T16:57:24 <Lydia Pintscher> And last but not least we are working with a researcher on looking into how we can improve Wikidata's semantic web compatibility to make it easier to use our data.
2023-10-18T16:57:52 <Lydia Pintscher> Ifeatu: What's coming for the Wikimedia projects?
2023-10-18T16:58:41 <Ifeatu> We want our team to keep growing and that's pretty exciting. We are hiring an Engineering Manager for our team. If you know anyone who might be suitable for the role, please encourage them to apply!
https://wikimedia-deutschland.softgarden.io/job/35655261?l=en
2023-10-18T16:59:01 <Ifeatu> I'll hand it over to you Jon
2023-10-18T16:59:09 <Jon Amar> thanks!

2023-10-18T17:00:48 <Jon Amar> From there we'll be taking a closer look at Suiteā€™s install and upgrade processes to see how we can improve those in next year. If we make great time we may even give those a smidgen (or more) of love this quarter.

2023-10-18T17:01:23 <Jon Amar> On to Evelien
2023-10-18T17:01:41 <Evelien> Alright, so here's what Wikibase Cloud is up to in the coming quarter
2023-10-18T17:02:14 <Evelien> Since weā€™re now more accessible for newcomers, we want to make sure the platform is continuously able to deal with the growing ecosystem. ElasticSearch remains on top of the list since it still has the highest impact on performance, and we aim to finish the update by the end of the year
2023-10-18T17:03:12 <Evelien> Another large factor in performance is the QueryService. In the last months, weā€™ve seen an increase in reported issues related to data missing in the QueryService. This quarter, we want to improve the performance to prevent this from happening in the future, and fix the missing data reported thus far
2023-10-18T17:03:52 <Evelien> Finally, weā€™re working to prepare ourselves for continued growth and feedback from Wikibase Cloud users next year. In order to deliver faster than we have been able to so far, on the dev side, we want to automate the deployment workflow
2023-10-18T17:04:28 <Evelien> On the UX side, we want to run a small survey to find the most urgent topics to address, and are researching an approach to the challenges people reported with data modeling in the past, so we're ready to act on this early next year
2023-10-18T17:04:58 <Evelien> That's it - Back to Mohammed to wrap up šŸ˜
2023-10-18T17:05:12 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> That was all the updates from us
2023-10-18T17:05:28 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> We dont have a lot of time left unfirtuantely, but if you have thoughts, feedback, comments, anything on your mind you youā€™re welcome to still ask and weā€™ll try to answer it asynchronously
2023-10-18T17:05:47 <Mohammed Sadat Abdulai> Before we go I just want to sent a shoutout to @Ainali and @Abbe98 for resuming your LIVE editing on Wikidata session <3
