Motivation[edit]

As part of their efforts to edit Greek and Byzantine commentaries on the works of Aristotle (Q868), the Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca et Byzantina (Q15803723) project hosts and maintains a set of databases, the most detailed and authoritative of which is their manuscript database. It describes, based on autopsy by expert scholars, over 900 manuscripts with an emphasis on production aspects such as quire formation and scribal hands. It is linked from the Pinakes (Q63953164) database and should be linked from Wikidata as well.

The database entries on manuscripts are classified by their status: 8 are listed as 'final', 523 as 'draft', and 392 as 'Intern' (internal). However, all entries are visible and contain at least basic information, and even those classified as 'drafts' are more substantial and detailed than many existing catalogues. I recommend that we treat them all equally as authoritative sources.
