BHL item ID[edit]

Motivation[edit]

Biodiversity Heritage Library (Q172266) currently assigns DOIs to titles and articles (and where possible we pass these DOIs and their accompanying data to Wikidata. We've recently been asked to provide DOIs at the volume/item level, e.g. for this publications: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/48631. We thus need BHL item IDs in Wikidata.

Item is the primary bibliographic unit used by the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). Item ID is the identifier used by BHL to uniquely identify each digitised (or born-digital) item uploaded onto BHL, e.g. https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/276641 = volume 10 of The Naturalist's Miscellany.

Wikidata has properties for the other key identifiers within the BHL ecosystem: BHL page ID (P687), BHL bibliography ID (P4327), BHL part ID (P6535), BHL creator ID (P4081) and BHL name ID (P8724), but not BHL item ID.

There are many examples of BHL items is Wikidata, e.g. Taxonomic literature Vol 1. A-G (Q56684621), but they have the wrong BHL identifier attached to them (here the BHL page ID). Gould's Birds of Australia has different QIDs for the individual volumes: see The Birds of Australia, Vol. 2 of 7 (Q90259167). These all (incorrectly) link to BHL via the BHL bibliography ID (which links to the title page for the entire series) instead of our proposed BHL item ID, which would take you to the individual volumes. --User:Nicolekearney
