Background[edit]

"Telegram Messenger is a globally accessible freemium, cross-platform, encrypted, cloud-based and centralized instant messaging (IM) service. The application also provides optional end-to-end encrypted chats, popularly known as secret chat and video calling, VoIP, file sharing and several other features." --Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegram_(software))

"You can use Telegram on all your devices at the same time — your messages sync seamlessly across any number of your phones, tablets or computers. Telegram has over 700 million monthly active users and is one of the 10 most downloaded apps in the world. With Telegram, you can send messages, photos, videos and files of any type (doc, zip, mp3, etc), as well as create groups for up to 200,000 people or channels for broadcasting to unlimited audiences. You can write to your phone contacts and find people by their usernames. As a result, Telegram is like SMS and email combined — and can take care of all your personal or business messaging needs. In addition to this, we support end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls, as well as voice chats in groups for thousands of participants." --Telegram FAQ (https://telegram.org/faq)

Finding Telegram groups and channels: To join public Telegram groups and channels, search for them in the mobile or desktop app and click Join inside the group. To join private Telegram groups and channels, you will need an invitation link from an existing member.

"Channels are essentially chats that allow an unlimited number of users, participants can't see other members, and there isn't a lot of communication between users. Groups are more exclusive, allowing only 200,000 members. Telegram Groups show you a list of members and let you interact with them. It's easy to tell the difference between the two based on the online status and member count (if there are more than 200,000, it's a channel). If you see the number of participants at the top of the conversation, you’re in a Telegram group." --How to Find Groups in Telegram (https://www.alphr.com/how-to-find-groups-in-telegram/)

Another (inefficient) way to find public channels and groups (and individual Telegram users): Wikidata property Telegram username (P3789). Use "What links here" to see which channels and groups have items in Wikidata.
