The Weimar Republic, spanning from 1919 to 1933, was a critical and turbulent period in German history marked mainly by political instability. During this time, political murders played a significant role, reflecting the intense ideological conflicts and social upheavals that characterized the era. This project seeks to delve into the narratives of these political assassinations contributing to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics. Possible sources to capture[edit]

The most effective approach to compile information on political murders in the Weimar Republic is through a thorough exploration of secondary literature dedicated to political assassinations. While I have not yet discovered a comprehensive account of political murders, and recognizing the challenges in accessing some secondary literature, I opted to rely on historical newspapers.

However, there exists a more comprehensive secondary literature specifically focused on feme murders. If you come across a valuable depiction, please don't hesitate to let me know.

It's essential to exercise caution when consulting certain newspapers, as misinformation about political murders can be prevalent. Therefore, I recommend relying on the more reliable sources such as Vorwärts (Q467800) or Das Reichsbanner (Q124409212) newspapers, known for their moderate and credible reporting. Additionally, consider exploring Berliner Volks-Zeitung (Q821854) in ZEFYS (Q124213347), or newspapers in general from Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Q836469).

Your contributions in finding and verifying sources are highly valuable. Feel free to share any relevant information or suggestions that could enhance the reliability and accuracy of our dataset.

Free newspaper archives are for example:

Additionally for Feme murders (Q1404483) I would recommend Die Weltbühne (Q512687) in Internet Archive (Q461).

Other sources e.g could be found in the online archive of the Hans Litten Archive (Q96097924).

Guidelines for collecting data[edit]

Examples are shooting murder of Erich Schulz at April 25, 1925 in Schöneberg (Q124393842), shooting murder of the SA-man Herbert Hentsch (Q124340320)

Label naming[edit]

The naming of the label should contain the type of murder in the beginning followed by the subject who was murdered. Subsequently after that the location and the point in time.

Required items and properties for the corpus[edit]

Requierd items and properties to query the data e.g. are firstly instance of (P31) political murder (Q1139665) corresponding with country (P17) Weimar Republic (Q41304).

Further required items and properties for the corpus[edit]

location[edit]

Further should be captured location (P276). Here should be captured the lowest possible item of the administrative hierarchy. For shooting murder of Erich Schulz at April 25, 1925 in Schöneberg (Q124393842) I chose therefore e.g. the suburb of Berlin Schöneberg (Q313189). If possible or the data is available the statement should be qualified with the qualifiers located on street (P669) e.g. Innsbrucker Straße (Q105531185) and located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) e.g. Berlin (Q64).

point in time[edit]

The point in time (P585) property should be used according to Wikidata standards. If according to the source the full date isn't available you can set the accuracy to year or decade.

number of deaths[edit]

This property should be collected and must be described with a source. The source can be formatted als follows. First the Wikdata Item for the source e.g. Das Reichsbanner (Q124409212) then publication date (P577) e.g. January 7, 193 followed by page(s) (P304) e.g. 2. Lastly the reference URL (P854) e.g https://www.reichsbanner-geschichte.de/media_zeitungen/media_zeitung/1933-01-07/1933-01-07_Ausgabe_1.pdf

armament of the perpetrator[edit]

Here the type of weapon by action performed should be collected. If the subject was e.g. shot the item firearm (Q12796) could be used. If the subject was manslaughtered specifically slain e.g. the item blunt instrument (Q339828) should be used etc. These items must also be described by a source.

non-required items[edit]

Non required items are e.g. number of perpetrators (P3886), number of injured (P1339), described by source (P1343), victim (Q1851760), perpetrator (Q4445088).
