Motivation[edit]

In semiotics, a modality is a particular way in which information is encoded for presentation to humans. Media modalities are a key aspect of creative practice and especially electronic literature (Q173167). We are at the start of our Digital Narratives WikiProject, which will bring in electronic literature from a variety of electronic literature databases. Many of the records we are about to add to Wikidata will have the "media modality" information available, and many researchers in the field will be searching for works based on their media modalities.

We have considered other options such as uses (P2283), has characteristic (P1552), and made from material (P186) but these properties are so general that it would be unusable as an analytic instrument and made from material (P186) is mainly used for physical materials.

Please note that in example 1-4, I have picked one electronic literature work leading to several different media modalities because this property is most useful when showing the combination of media modalities present in a multimodal work.

Discussion[edit]

CommentI'm a colleague of HanAck, so shouldn't vote on this, but I agree that media modality is an important feature for works of electronic literature and that this would be useful. --Lijil (talk) 13:15, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
