Merge request

Hey guys, I know this is probably completely the wrong place, but I am pretty sure contract killing and contract killer should be merged in a way or another. Mr.Ibrahembot keeps making bad "instance of" change to rural settlement of Russia (Q634099)

there is a bot (apparently) that keeps setting "instance of Wikimedia category (Q4167836)" in rural settlement of Russia (Q634099). This is wrong and I reverted that change 3 times already. The Wikimedia category is Category:Rural settlements of Russia (Q8689747).

Can someone please protect wikidata item Q634099 from that change?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Egermundson (talk • contribs).

I have notified its operator. The only way to protect the item from that change would be by applying a partial block to the bot, which is not enabled on Wikidata yet. Need to bypass spam filter

Sci-Hub has a new URL, sci-hub.si (.se and .tw are still valid, too). It should be added to Sci-Hub (Q21980377), but I cannot do it because the URLs containing the substring "sci-hub." are forbidden by the spam filter. The rationale for that is clear (Sci-Hub violates copyright), but in this particular case it is necessary to add this URL. Please help. --colt_browning (talk) 20:43, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

The continued creations of User:Viapicante

(It is unlikely that this user will respond on their talk page, since three other messages by other users have gone unacknowledged there.)

One of this user's creations has been identified in a recent bulk deletion request involving other items by spammers. This particular user's most recent contributions seem almost in line with the modi operandi of the other spammers. I feel very much inclined to block this user on this basis, but seeing as this user's been around for years I figured getting more opinions is warranted in this case. Partial blocks for labels, descriptions and aliases

Partial block may only prevent users from editing some specific pages/namespaces. This is currently not a usecase. AbuseFilter allows granular block from specific actions. (All features of partial blocks are replacable by AbuseFilter, other than autoblock and cookie blocks.)--GZWDer (talk) 08:59, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi,

I am curently writing a bot (AitalDisem) to edit lexemes.

This bot is a web application that needs to be hosted on a server, but the IP of our server is blocked. The reason given is Open proxy but I have checked with our host provider and they didn't use any open proxy. I contacted the stewards but didn't have any answers.

How could I have my IP unblock ?

Hello, server hosting services are often abused by Long-Term Abusers (prolific vandals) for creating a VPN proxy quickly to bypass an IP blocks placed on them, therefore they are treated just like Open Proxies. We definitely can grant you an IPBE (special flag to tell software to ignore the underlying IP block), and I did it. It expires in 6 months (which should be sufficient for you during the approval period) - I've left a note on Bot RFP page for closing bureaucrat to grant IPBE permanently when it is approved. Problem of sourcing

Q63769650#P570 and Q63769650#P20 both lack a source (given the constraint violations). [LINK REDACTED The one] that was first provided was deleted and masked. How to deal with that . Unfortunately CT isn't mentioned in the "Fichier des personnes décédées (Q80900474)", as she did not die in France. I don't know any other reliable source for such claims. With this edit the user added the clearly wrong account/username "drtycmptr", which had also previously been added by the accounts Kyle Ricardo Lai-fatt fans from Vietnam (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)) and Inya Shakya Mumbai (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)) - both IIRC blocked for vandalism and involved in adding various fake infos surrounding some guy named "Kyle Lai-fatt" (Q61943526) who also posted his fake biography all over the web. The user also added the Twitter username "moonliIIies", which had previously been added by Anusachdeva101 (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)) (the only remaining edit of that account). There are also at least two other accounts who had been adding similarly wrong social media acccounts to the item (some of the same as the users above): Jayla Nichole Laifatthead (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)) and Elena Cordova Becerril (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)). How to request deletion of 1000+ items?

What's the best way to nominate 1000+ Wikimedia template (Q11266439) items for deletion? Each item has one sitelink, but it leads to a deleted page (e.g. Q20315204 and Q15419012). The bulk deletion template at Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions can handle only max 90 items at a time. --Shinnin (talk) 17:18, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

• If you remove the sitelink, the items will show up on Wikidata:Database_reports/to_delete/empty_template_items. Eventually an admin (usually @MisterSynergy:) deletes them. No need to list them for deletion. --- Jura 17:22, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Correct. I have several item deletion worklists to look at roughly two or three times a week, and "template items without sitelinks" is one of them. If you vacate the sitelinks section of such items because all connected pages where deleted, the items will come to my attention anyways soon.

I'll just delete the sitelinks then, thanks for the advise. I found them by comparing sitelinks from a sparql query against article names in Wikipedia dump index files. I then verified the results by querying them from Wikipedia (there were some false positives). These are just the ones I found from English Wikipedia as each Wikipedia project has to be checked separately. This is not the first time mass edits made from these two accounts create mass problems. This user's talk page is full of complaints regarding creating duplicates or other issues with mass additions. This is the results of last additions: [7] – thousands of constraint violations. I ask administrators to somehow restrict mass edits from these two accounts until this user learns to add new content without causing massive problems each time. I asked him (and not only me) to respect the constraints and check the data before mass additions, to no avail. I see the OP was blocked indefinitely as a "Vandalism-only" account, reduced to a week (now expired), possibly after email. The OP also posted an unblock request, but they used the "declined" variant so it was never checked by another admin.

I note that this user attempted to email several administrators before using the unblock template (incorrectly). I believe the default message seen by blocked users is MediaWiki:Blockedtext (with variants for Farsi and French), which suggests To discuss the block, you may contact $1 or another administrator. I can understand why a user seeing this message might start emailing administrators. Is there any reason why it doesn't mention Template:Unblock or a guide to appealing blocks? (Cf en:MediaWiki:Blockedtext). Do we expect that using {{unblock}} should be one of the first things a blocked user tries? If so, then the message should be more helpful. Hello @Bovlb: sorry as I'm out of wiki due to personal life changes, but I logged in due to your ping. I think باسم can help as not involved ar-N sysop. First of all, I made the indefinitely block by mistake so I changed it once I noticed it. Most of this user edits related to future things that he want to do, and I see that from his comments in arwiki (like, (1) I want to merge items because enwiki probably want to create this title on future, or (2) I want to do.... because I may in future do...), also I received 2 complains about this user via email from different active users on Wikidata. Moreover, this user sent to me more than 4 emails all contains same words "if you love God revert your edits"! and then he sent 2 emails with offensive words. I found that this user has 2 accounts! (User:أبو السعد 22 + user:أبو السعد ٢٢) confirmed socks as he sent emails to me from both accounts through Wikidata (Special:emailuser), and one of this accounts blocked on arwiki for one month. Finally, really I don't know what this user want . Also, hope that he can understand that I'm ar-N sysop on Wikidata not mean that I'd only deal with Arabic things here, and I (we) can deal with every language as Wikidata is "almost" separate project from wikis! --Alaa :)..! 16:28, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

MovieFex removed this claim four times, saying this is not correct and place of birth should be a city, you give a county, and what is next? Europe? South America? Asia? - this seems to be the next botwork with "because category in".

Neither MovieFex nor Ghuron have started a discussion on Talk:Q4212809 or Property_talk:P19 on this subject. I see no relevant discussion on either of their user talk pages.

Giving a country as place of birth is normal practice when nothing more specific is known. The description on place of birth (P19) says most specific known (e.g. city instead of country, or hospital instead of city) birth location of a person, animal or fictional character which suggests to me that country is anticipated as a valid, if not ideal, value for the property. MovieFex would be better off doing something other than continually removing this information, such as determining a more specific place of birth of this person.

Both parties are encouraged to seek consensus through discussion instead of edit warring. In particular, edit summaries, while highly recommended, are not a form of discussion.

Yeah surely, but as Wikidata don't have fixed item names, I can't think how we can stop recreation. But for dodgy ref sites I think we can use local blacklist or abuse filters. Btw they are back Special:Contributions/M.alon44. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 12:19, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

@1997kB: If you blacklist, fantastic. Alternatively if the community wishes to have a list of problematic domains that you are not (yet) ready to blacklist, then it is possible to get COIBot to watch a local page and such links. I will defer to Beetstra on the best means.

Of course I would also encourage this community to look to suggest to the larger WMF community via m:Talk:spam blacklisst of domains that they think should be sent to the trashpit for all wikis.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:55, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

Global spam blacklist, WikiData and data re-use

Several (sometimes heated) discussions were started on the global spam-blacklist as WikiData cannot fill in 'official website' fields for entities where the domain is globally blacklisted. Solutions, and some of the problems that they give, were discussed. The problem has been redirected to Phabricator as there does not seem to be a 'perfect' solution that is currently technically possible. The problem involves many, many pages throughout our projects (and hence their items here), most prominently redirect sites (tinyurl, bit.ly, goo.gl, etc.), porn sites (pornhub, redtube, etc.), but also many companies and other organisations who have (heavily) abused our servers.

There is one possibility that can now be implemented which needs both admins at the global blacklist, and editors at WikiData to agree and cooperate, which I posted at m:Talk:Spam_blacklist#Temporary_solution (subsection of m:Talk:Spam_blacklist#WD_and_blacklisted_links).

• We need to question the value of having blacklisted links here; in some cases the websites are blacklisted not for being spam but for being outright malicious, for example. For now though, that solution seems to be workable.--Jasper Deng (talk) 09:37, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
  • @Jasper Deng: some of the links are indeed plainly malicious (probably 99.9% of the viagra and tramadol spam) but those are unlikely to have an article. Items as url shorteners, porn sites, petition sites are blacklisted because of their (potential to) abuse They were not blacklisted because they are spam (I don't think that we had any significant spamming of the larger porn sites - they are abused, here and on all wikis I checked), because they are malicious (petition sites are not malicious - they are linked to to gather more signatures for a good cause), or that we don't want to link to them (Tinyurl needs the link to the official site - but they are linked to to avoid the spam blacklist, or to obscure what you link to). The stuff that would merit a link but that we really don't want to link to is very limited (on en.wikipedia I am not really aware of any, maybe Encyclopedia Dramatica when they were pushing their limits). --Beetstra (talk) 13:22, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Second, back to the main problem, per User:Trade/Spam-blacklist whitelist, if a such blacklisted site has own a property, then editing formatter URL (P1630) of that property is however not blacklisted (e.g. sorry for my diff 1112036839 and diff 1112036882), I'm not sure if this should be OK (even for Beetstra) or not. Third, putting a subpage (even that's something like index(.html/.php...) or #) on official website (P856) and friends may be more friendly, if a site has TLS v1.3 support, which however means that the terminal users has to install the newest version of Chrome, Edge or others to let all the Internet access be encrypted by at least ESNI. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:42, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
    • @Liuxinyu970226: Fun fact: By using identifier properties as sources you can allow blacklisted URL's to be included on Wikipedia articles in certain languages.
