Rollback

[edit]

Hi Vogone, thank you for rolling back the edits on Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Is it possible for me to request Rollback rights similar to Wikipedia? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 17:17, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, at the moment only global rollbackers and sysops have the rollback permission here. There's no "rollbacker" user group. But we could make a proposal to add this right to e. g. the autopatrolled user group or to create a new user group. Greetings, Vogone (talk) 17:28, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. Where do I suggest that? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 17:34, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Project_chat would be good for that. (I would support such a proposal, btw ;-) ) --Vogone (talk) 17:38, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okies. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 17:42, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I was wondering if you could let me know how I am doing out here. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 17:51, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your contribs look good. BTW, there's a gadget (slurpInterwiki) which is very useful to collect all interwiki links from a page. Then you have more time and less edits, so that you can create more items ;-) Kind regards, Vogone (talk) 19:33, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I know about the gadget, I even have it installed, but it fails to work properly on IE7 which I use on my University PCs. So I end up doing everything manually. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:15, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks! Bye, --Syrio posso aiutare? 22:32, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Could I ask you to check a thing? While creating an element from itwiki I think I had some problems, and I ended up with this two elements: Q819804 and Q819771. I tried to erase label, description and the link to itwiki from the second one, but it doesn't let me do so (because - trying using the english language - "Edit not allowed: Another item (819804) already has label "Malfurion Grantempesta" and description "Personaggio della serie Warcraft" associated with language code it"). Hows can I fix that? --Syrio posso aiutare? 23:53, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
We are fixing such problems with the deletion of one of the items by an administrator. I've ✓ Done that. Thanks for your work, Vogone (talk) 05:55, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hindi main page and news

[edit]

Hi Vogone, I realised that the Hindi main page is outdated and needs to be updated. I thought I'd volunteer to take it up for now. Since I need to shift some news to the archive, I created a page. However, instead of creating WD:News/hi, I created Wikidata:समाचार instead. Is that okay? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:03, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, seems good. For example the German subpage is also translated. Thanks, Vogone (talk) 16:33, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Thank you. :) --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 17:06, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm obviously not a coder but I like what you are doing with the template. I wanted to see what it would look like:

(delete | history | links | log)

The log link could easily be removed (Its just an idea) but I think the history and links button would be helpful. Which would probably need a discussion because there is probably even better ideas out there but what do you think? -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 10:28, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Danke für die Rechte

[edit]

I don't think I quite follow your objection - who's ever heard of a lack of dashed confusing people? I mean, I can put a link right before my signature

Q1. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler)

without confusing anything, neither on a wikicode level nor a human-readable one. And that would even be the case if my signature didn't start with a dash

Q42. Francophonie&Androphilie (talk)

The only potentially confusing situation would be if someone forgot to use a period (full stop), and didn't have a dash in their sig

Q2012 Francophonie&Androphilie (talk)

but I don't see how any concerns on that front outweigh the ugly

Why? Bot have userpage with contact info and creates several pages per minute with pauses. If I run script from my account and give no summary - whats difference when I create same pages manually? You deleted this Item per WT:N/EC (fi:Luokka:Ohjaukset Wikisanakirjaan) but this edit suggests that it contained 15 links at least at some point of which only the Finisch one falls under the exclusion policy. The item normally only should have been deleted if it only contained that Finish link (which it maybe did when you deleted it). I can't trace where something went wrong but we should think of something to prevent something like that from happening in the future. I created Q6112524 before I noticed that Issue so no undeletion of Q670288 is needed.--Saehrimnir (talk) 14:55, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jitrixis!

Could you have a look on this section, please? Thanks in advance, Vogone talk 14:21, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I understand what is the problem but it's work perfectly with me. I don't know where is the problem. I don't think it's from the script, because he ask to the api the last log of the file. If it's a deletion log the file is deleted (because a file which has been deleted can't have anymore log except if the page has been recreated) and he see the name of the person who have made this log. I've some question. What is the OS of your computer (Windows/Linux/Mac/...) the name of the navigator and his version (for exemple Firefox 19.0.2) ---- Jitrixis (talk) 14:32, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I had the problem with too different OSes. Mac OS (10.6) and Ubuntu Linux (12.04). Furthermore, I used Safari 6.0.2 and Firefox 19.0.2. Kind regards, Vogone talk 14:47, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mozilla add-ons

Hi. (You've deleted Q7593080 which Tntchn‎ RfDed as a duplicate after merging.) An add-on for a Mozilla program can be a plug-in or a background theme too, and those are not extensions or XPI files. Questions

[edit]

Hi, Finally, I have one question : When I delete a item, I can choose 4 reasons in the group "Items". Do the reason "Duplicted items" and "Merged with" are strictly redundant ? Or does "Merged with" is for say "I'm delete this item in wikidata, because the item was merged on the wikipedias" ? Or does "Duplicted items" is for say "I'm just delete a dummy creation without any transfer of interlanguage link" ? And I have the same question for the two reasons "Notability policy"/"Exclusion criteria". --Nouill (talk) 22:43, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It makes no difference whether you chose "Duplicated item" or "Merged with". They are indeed redundant. In the case "Notability policy"/"Exclusion criteria" "Notability policy" fits always. "Exclusion criteria" is just a special case of the "Notabilty policy". So you can use "Notability policy" all the time but "Exclusion criteria" only, if the linked page was in one of the on Wikidata:Notability/Exclusion criteria mentioned categories. Regards, Vogone talk 22:50, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bot-Approval-Praxis

[edit]

Hallo!

Liebe Grüße, Vogone talk 14:29, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Translation notification

[edit]

I do not know if you intend to use the same kind of system as meta, but there is some problems related to Translation_Notification_Bot you should be aware of! In this example, the bot has added notes in the user_talk of inactive users, and has therefor been blocked. -- Lavallen (block) 09:40, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is a bit silly, because this is actually a MediaWiki extension, not a bot. --Rschen7754 09:45, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I know, but it is still a problem. -- Lavallen (block) 09:47, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you actually read the mw:Extension:TranslationNotifications page, you would find that people sign up for these notifications through the Special:TranslatorSignup page. If they then go inactive and don't take their names off the list, that's not our problem. --Rschen7754 10:00, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know they do, but adding notes, nobody is interested to read, is regarded as spam, nomatter who does it or on who's request. Also the Babel-extension-bot was blocked. I think you should report this as a bugg in the Extension. Inactive users should not be notified! Even messages sent by EdwardsBot from WMF is sometimes reverted, all users have to follow local rules.
-- Lavallen (block) 10:25, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Following your reasoning, all user talk pages of inactive users could be full-protected as editing there would be "spam". Furthermore, I do not know about such a "local rule" here on Wikidata and I do not even know whether blocking an extension bot here would have any effect. Kind regards, Vogone talk 12:13, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you follow the link: Special:TranslatorSignup, there is an option to be "contacted on another wiki", so it does not only affect Wikidata. And there is, as far as I know, no problems to block Extension-bots. There where no problems with blocking the Babel-extension-bot, who flooded RC on almost every project. If an inactive user returns, (s)he can activate his/her subscription again, but he/she cannot remove any protection.
Me, personally, consider all these welcome-bots as spam as well, but that's me. With 8 user-accounts and 725 projects, there is a risk that I will have a welcome-message in 3700 pages. Some days, it feels like I have... -- Lavallen (block) 19:58, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I cannot follow your reasoning. The Translation Notification Bot here on Wikidata is the same as on Meta-Wiki. Same extension, even the same account. If a local wiki decides to ban this service it will automatically both, Meta-Wiki and Wikidata notifications. Furthermore, notifying interested translators is not welcoming users. I'm opposed to welcome bots as well, by the way. But that's a completely different topic. Regards, Vogone talk 20:32, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and if there is problems with the Meta-bot, then it is already a problem here. People who think they subscribe to such notifications will discover that they will have no notifications. -- Lavallen (block) 04:24, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Solution is very easy: don't block the account when it does what it's requested. --Nemo 12:04, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Users who do not behave according to the etiquette are blocked, what is so strange about that? Does the puppets of the developers have some kind of immunity? -- Lavallen (block) 12:31, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is not a user, it's a service. It's not the puppet of devs, it's the "puppet" of the users requesting the service. Are you saying that the inactive user who requested the notifications does not behave according to the etiquette? --Nemo 16:45, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, being inactive is not wrong, neither is it to forget to unsubscribe. But software-users (sometimes called bots) have to follow an etiquette. There is no exception for MediaWiki-bots in the bot-policy, at least not on svwp. It does not need to apply for permission since it's not editing in content-pages and only on user_talks requested by users. But it still has to behave in a civilised manner and not behave like a viagra-spamer. Follow the advise of Hannibal and fix the bugs in the extension! -- Lavallen (block) 18:43, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, this would not be a good idea. I am always receiving translation notifications on a wiki where I am de facto inactive. That would mean, I wouldn't be able to receive translation notifications where I, the subscriber, want to have them. Regards, Vogone talk 19:21, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another suggestion from Hannibal was to only send notifications to users who respond to the them. I think we, by now, have analized the issue here. We will not get any further in this thread. It wasn't me who blocked the user and I cannot unblock it, and I have no ability to modify the extension. And I do not think it helps to convince svwp to allow this behavior since there are > 700 other projects who can respond in the same manner. Several of these are more bureacratic against software-users than svwp. One reason I belive svwp responded in this manner is that there are other spambots who add messages to every villagepump on every project, nomatter if one single user on the project is concerned or not. Spambots can be a good tool, but they have to be used with care, otherwise they will be treated as a 'persona non grata'. -- Lavallen (block) 20:06, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So, because some bots send unrequested notifications, you blocked a service that sends requested notifications. Brilliant! If you have suggestions, please do as Hannibal said and file them. In the meanwhile, don't disrupt the platform overriding software preferences of users just because you think they didn't know what they were doing. Thanks, Nemo 09:12, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(Just a small note to Vogone) "To be honest, this would not be a good idea. I am always receiving translation notifications on a wiki where I am de facto inactive. That would mean, I wouldn't be able to receive translation notifications where I, the subscriber, want to have them." This was not my suggestion. My suggestion was that you would be totally inactive for, say, a year, on all Wikimedia wikis, before you get to re-subscribe if you want the service again. Also, these were not 3 alternative solutions, but steps to be taken one after another. "don't disrupt the platform overriding software preferences of users just because you think they didn't know what they were doing." is not what Lavallen et al are doing here. They are noting that inactive users are probably not remembering to un-subscribe to this service when life outside the Wikimedia projects take over, and that when the user later comes back to the project will find hundreds of old, out-of-date messages of low priority mixed with a few high-priority messages from persons. Please keep in mind that we all want to find a good solution to this situation. Best wishes//Hannibal (talk) 09:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
True, your three proposals are not alternative. I'm sure people want to find a good solution, but blocks are only (at best) a workaround. We should also not ignore the active users... --Nemo 22:47, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What does this mean? I still trust You, and feel that the community does, too. --Ricordisamoa 22:54, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A merge of "Staff" and "General staff"

[edit]

As far, as I understand, I see that with edits [1] and [2] the record "Q6813432" ("Staff (military)") was merged into "Q495430" ("General staff") by Yamaha5 and deleted by you (Wikidata:Requests for deletions/Archive/2013/04/28#Q6813432). The problem is that the discussion Talk:Q495430 ([3]) clearly has a request to split the record (into "Staff" and "General staff")... Do you think that that split shouldn't have happened (in such case some explanation on that talk page would be appreciated) or could you, please, undo the merge..? I have already asked the opinion of the merger himself ([4]), but without a result (he probably missed the question, since his talk page is redirected - [5])...

And, on a related note (though, perhaps, the discussion should be held elsewhere), couldn't the deletions get better "documentation"? It took some effort (digging through contributions of the merger) to find out what record was merged and where the deletion "discussion" happened... Even then, "Moved to Q495430." and "✓ Deleted by Vogone" do not really tell me what happened (it's good that I still remember what record did I create) and why... --Martynas Patasius (talk) 19:36, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you undid the merge. Thank you. --Martynas Patasius (talk) 17:01, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Vogone! :) Think you broke something in your update to RFP. The second block is all funny, and I can't figure out how to fix it. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 02:57, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Does it look better for you now? Regards, Vogone talk 20:05, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Somewhat. RfRemoval still isn't centered for me, and RfOS is twice as wide as RfB. The whole second block is also a little bit wider than the first block. My computer has a fairly small screen, so if you're not seeing any problems that might have something to do with it. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 01:35, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm having the same problems myself. Just an FYI. FrigidNinja 02:04, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two things

[edit]

Hi Vogone, it's nice to meet you. You seem like a very knowledgeable editor, so I'll raise these two points here instead of creating another project chat thread.

First, the answer to question number 25 at Help:FAQ seems to be outdated.

Second, what is the Main type (GND) for something like this?

I saw you revert my action, But I have a question, I know stward gets already autopatrol flags, but no need to get local flag? Regards.--DangSunM (talk) 18:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All stewards and global sysops have both permissions (autopatrolled and confirmed) automatically here. So there's no need to add them to these groups. Regards, Vogone talk 19:21, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

RfP

[edit]

What 'some actions outside of Wikidata' did you mean?--Ahonc (talk) 14:24, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly the long pointless discussion on the Base RFB for ukwikinews. But local work is more relevant for me. If you continue your good local work and become more active in the property creation process, I would grant you the permission. Regards, Vogone talk 15:19, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata:Bots

[edit]

Why? This is a wikidata policy and should be translated in many languages. --β16 - (talk) 07:56, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, it isn't. It's just a draft which is not accepted by the community, yet (see Wikidata talk:Bots). Thus, a translation would be senseless. There will be many changes to the page in the future until it finally gets a policy. If you think translations of this outdated draft are still needed, you can still edit the subpages manually, without the extension. Regards, Vogone talk 12:45, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, you're right, I haven't read here (no {{Tb}}). But, many policy proposals currently use this extension. In particular, this is not a controversial policy, infact in talk page in May there is only one edit, without any response, so accepted by those who follow this page. Before me three TA, including you, have already marked this page for translation, and one after. So I think the trend is to manage this page through the extension from now. --β16 - (talk) 15:58, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. :-) I just don't feel managing a page which is going to be changed frequently through the extension is the best idea. If 1 point changes in the future, the whole translations for the related section have to be marked as invalid (= FuzzyBot will change the whole section back to English). So in my opinion, translating such proposals manually would cause less frustration for the translators. If it becomes a policy someday, the page will probably not be changed that often anymore, and using the extension would be more comfortable. Regards, Vogone talk 16:17, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My translation adminship

[edit]

Hello and thanks for the attention. You are right in the sense that I was not aware of the implications when I applied for translation adminship, but since I am the head translator for Macedonian (mk, македонски), I thought I ought to have it. On the other hand, I am still not sure what you mean, thouse help pages you mentioned aren't very helpful to me, for some reason. I have done a huge number of translations in Macedonian here, as you can see. If this adminshop means checking and proofreading, I am managing the states of the translations on regular basis too (in the upper left drop-down menu). Did you mean that an admin is supposed to dobe ticking something while proofreading? The thing is, I am the only translator for the language here, so maybe the system automatically approves my translations and I don't get the chance to use some functions (whatever they may be, for I can't really see them). Or perhaps I have misunderstood the whole concept? I am an admin on translatewiki.net and I've never had any issue akin to this one. As I said, perhaps I am in the dark about something. --B. Jankuloski (talk) 23:18, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Trust is no issue here. Your translation work is quite appreciated. Although, translationadminship is neither needed for checking translations, nor for proofreading. It is only for managing them. A translationadmin can tag a page for translation or remove it from the translation system. Furthermore, they have access to pages like Special:AggregateGroups. Especially with marking and removing pages from the translation system one can cause a big mess if one doesn't know how to do it properly. If you understand how these things work and you want to do them I would have no objections to keep the tools assigned to your account, as I still think you can be trusted. The only barrier is the understanding of the documentation. So it is up to you :-) Vogone talk 14:07, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

info about a deletion

[edit]

Hi, I just saw this item deletion in my watchlist, but I have no clue of what it could be ... probably an item I created, but what ? TomT0m (talk) 00:33, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah Ok, it's used by this page. This is not a notability problem, it's a "Bonnie and clyde" problem. This character is a famous french literature character, but it ishis whole family who has got an article on Wikipedias. I did a short article on fr: who was deleted because of the Bonny and Clyde problem and because people are not used to Wikidata and wikipedia yet. But the item is still needed, so I say it meets the structural requirement criteria. TomT0m (talk) 00:52, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to intrude, but this deletion also strikes me as problematic. The item fulfills in fact both the structural requirement criteria and the references criteria. Thénardier is a very well-known character as such (and not only as a couple with Mrs Thenardier). I can easily find dozens of accurate sources establishing his main features. Alexander Doria (talk) 10:34, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I see the problem and restored the item. Sorry for interrupting your work. Regards, Vogone talk 12:18, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, maybe there should be a warning or some more precaution before deleting an item, like a check of what links here, but maybe the software is not totally ready yet for that. TomT0m (talk) 12:30, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: My comment

[edit]

Regardless of if you think my reaction was proper, consider this: if you don't want Wikidata to become like the English Wikipedia, then the people here need to stop dragging issues from the English Wikipedia over to Wikidata. Also, how would you react if someone brutally misrepresented something you had done and used it as a reason to oppose your RfA? I was hurt by PinkAmpersand's oppose because I couldn't really respond to it without raising old disputes that aren't even related to this site. However, I was even more upset by the final oppose because it completely misrepresented something I had done. Taking all of that into account, perhaps you can better understand why I've lost my enthusiasm for Wikidata. AutomaticStrikeout 21:01, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can fully understand you, and I'm also absolutely not a fan of issue dragging and drama lessons. Anyway, I also don't like if you leave a community just because 2-3 other community members don't agree with you or your actions. I think it is normal to have some people on any wiki who criticise you and your work, even me and my work, thus I hope you will calm a bit down and hopefully regain your enthusiasm for Wikidata after a short break. I know how such comments can hurt, but I think I've learned not to take them too personal. Vogone talk 21:34, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I fully agree with Vogone. ASO, I have two failed RfAs on the English Wikipedia, I've been called a hat collector by a global sysop, and I was once a topic banned user. And look at me. I have overcame all these issues and I have proved them, and most importantly, myself, that nothing anybody can say will ever hurt me again. I have grown stronger, and I am completely sure that you can do the same. Like I said on your RfA, I hate when users bring issues from other wikis to vote here, and I yell at them everytime they do so. However, as Vogone, I expect you to leave this in the past and keep up the good work :) — ΛΧΣ21 21:44, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Die Dokumentation zu der Volage habe ich importiert und den kleinen Klammerfehler bei der Einbindung dieser Vorlage auf deiner Benutzerseite behoben.
  2. Hier weiß ich nicht genau was du meinst. Wenn du eine Anzeige von dem Präfix "wikt:yi:" vor deinem Benutzernamen meinst, geht das wohl nicht ohne Veränderungen an der Vorlage selbst.

Colour of your signature

Hi Vogone. I like the colour of your signature. The light green and blue colour looks nice. Can you tell me what colour code for the two colours did you put for your signature? Thanks. JianhuiMobile (talk) (mobile account of Jianhui67) 17:15, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The colour codes are #0E0 and #1E90FF. Greetings, Vogone talk 17:27, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Look at my new signature now. Lol I wonder if people would think I am plagiarising your signature or not. My signature for my main account is way different from yours. Just have another question here, why can't I use restore, undo or rollback to revert some edits of new editors removing off sitelinks? When I use restore and undo, I get a whole paragraph of red error message. When I use rollback, it says rollback failed. Do you have any idea on this? JianhuiMobile talk 10:43, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Could you show me an example where that happened, please? Vogone talk 14:57, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This diff is an example. Try reverting using restore, undo and rollback. JianhuiMobile talk 15:10, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Of course this is not possible since the editor has moved the link to another item (Q23602). A page cannot be connected to more than 1 item at the same time. Vogone talk 15:48, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh so that's the reason. I even thought that using rollback there will work. So this is how Wikidata works. 1 link per item. JianhuiMobile talk 15:54, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Rather one item per link (page). --Base (talk) 22:02, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vogone, just asking over here. This account have not even made 50 edits. Why did you remove my confirmed right saying it is redundant? JianhuiMobile talk 02:02, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Rollback is almost same with confirmed. DIfference is whether it has rollback button or not. both has "Autoconfirmed" and "Editsemiprotected", so having rollback only won't matter. --by ReviTalkCMG at 03:30, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposal

[edit]

Hi Vogone,

I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.

As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. You can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal or reply here, whichever is convenient for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

P.S: I need to submit the proposal to Google by March 19, 2014.

Hi dear. Globally locking of the bot is related to this matter. My account was been hacked. Amir in his talk page in fa.wiki said maybe it happened because of security bugs on labs.--Abbas 10:36, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, if you believe there is a security bug, in a first place, you should report it on a bugzilla so that we know about it. Please include a steps to reproduce it or at least try to explain to us what the bug is and how do you think that it should be fixed. Thank you Petrb (talk) 11:13, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Petrb: Surely Amir can explain it better than me. As Amir said here users who has Shall access can read files of other users on Labs then maybe your password that been saved in a file maybe seen by others. I test this bug by myself. All files on Labs (With the exception of a very small number) are available & visible and editable for me.--Abbas 07:04, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. I now have become more active on Wikidata and almost have 200 edits in the mainspace. Do you think it would be a good time to request rollback now? Merge-project requiring language skills

[edit]

Dear Wikidatan,

Even though Wikidata phase 1 (replacing interlanguage by Wikidata) is officially finished, there are still a lot a duplicate items that should be merged. Projects to list possible duplicates (and therefore possibles mergers) have been started by users such as Pasleim with User:Pasleim/projectmerge and Ivan A. Krestinin with User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge. Those bot-generated lists do however contain quite some false positives and therefore still need a human eye to decide whether to merge or not.

Since you are an administrator on Wikidata with knowledge of the Lithuanian language, User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge/ltwiki might benefit from your help. As said, it lists couples of WD items that might possibly be merged. If you are already involved in these projects or not interested, I am sincerely sorry for bothering you.

With kind regards, FakirNL (talk) 23:50, 27 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An important message about renaming users

[edit]

Dear Vogone,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects

[edit]

Hey Vogone, why do you constantly revert my changes on the merge gadget? It is so obvious that redirects should be created instead of reporting every merge at WD:RFD and we have to encourage our users to do so because there are still some of them who do not even know that redirects exist. Do you really want us to create another RFC if we should use redirects instead of deleting items? I bet not. ;-) So please lets encourage our users doing the right thing and perhaps even remove the RFD feature from the gadget completely in a few weeks. -- Bene* talk 17:09, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's in no way obvious before the feature is fully ready and of course there will always be cases in which we delete items, also after the transition is completed. And if you really want to "encourage" users to use the redirect feature instead, you should probably fix the description of the "Request deletion for extra item on RfD" part, though as already stated I wouldn't do that before the most obvious bugs are fixed. Changing the order of checkboxes alone won't help. Vogone (talk) 17:29, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So what are the most obvious bugs in your opinion which have to be solved? Are there any? -- Bene* talk 18:54, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Closing

[edit]

Dear Vogone, I guess that this request can be closed? Lymantria (talk) 07:59, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. But for some reason I don't understand a steward (Snowolf) wants it to be closed by an "uninvolved bureaucrat", in case you find any, feel free to ask them. Regards, Vogone (talk) 12:31, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, as the result of the vote does not matter since TBloemink's admin rights have been taken away, I don't see why you couldn't close it. Lymantria (talk) 13:55, 2 October 2014 (UTC) P.S. As this statement suggests closing the discussions, to me closure seems non-controversial.[reply]
One could argue it does matter for future reference, as the WMF undertook the action independently from the RFP/R. So I'd prefer someone else to close it before I'm accused on IRC again about having a COI or even prejudices. Vogone (talk) 15:54, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, reassigned. I just regularly remove inactive TAs in order to make sure Special:UserList/translationadmin only contains active TAs so that someone looking there for a translation administrator will also find an active one. Vogone (talk) 18:45, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Even though the snowball clause may not be officially recognized on Wikidata, it is actually in use. Three different administrators closed RFAs under this clause in the past: [1], [2], [3], once even with less than two days of discussion. I know you're proud to be a crat and want to close as many RFAs as possible ;-) --Ricordisamoa 04:45, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Any official response from "the worst vandal of all"? ;-) --Ricordisamoa 10:02, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course and sorry, I missed this. I oppose the snowball clause because it deprieves the RFA applicant in concern of the chance to recognise when an RFA is very unlikely to pass and when it may be appropriate to withdraw. This is an essential part of developing good judgment which should, in my opinion, not just be taken away by some enwiki snowball clause. Vogone (talk) 11:02, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think of that. It may be worth mentioning at Wikidata:Administrators and/or Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Administrator/Header to prevent such mistakes in the future. Thank you, --Ricordisamoa 02:46, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help decide the future of Wikimania

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

How is this vandalism? The page contains valid edits. --Vogone (talk) 22:19, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Either discussion on the META on subject (Igor Janev) was not relevant, or all these statements by editors protecting Igor Janev constituted false statements and nonsenses. You can have one or the other truth, not both in the same time. 178.222.74.146 22:29, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we suppress statements merely because they may be untrue. Furthermore, there were some neutral comments not involving an opinion on that page, too. I don't see any justification to delete this. Vogone (talk) --23:26, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! One doubt about marking content to be translatable

[edit]

Hi Vogone,

Thank you so much for your edits on Template:Outdated, I had never make a template translatable so I had many doubts. I'm interested in keeping updated the translations to Spanish and make translatable what it isn't translatable yet. So my question is, if I want to make translatable something (like a template), what should I do?

Should I do the changes that you did on the main template page and then create the Template:TEMPLATENAME/text with the <translate> tags and mark it? Can I mark a template to translate or is it only able to administrators?

Thanks in advance! I await your answer.

Regards, Ivanhercaz | Discusión 10:00, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! In case you want to make a transcludable page like a template translatable, it is indeed better to move the content to a /text subpage and make that one translatable. For pages which are not to be transcluded (policy pages etc.) a /text subpage is usually not necessary. It might be helpful for you to read the MediaWiki documentation on this topic (as you already seem to have done a bit) and play around a bit with this tool on Test-Wikidata. You will need to ask for the "translation administrator" right over there, though. After you familiarised yourself with this tool I could grant you this permission also on the real Wikidata. Regards, --Vogone (talk) 18:18, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your answer! I will try to practice on Test-Wikidata and improve. I think there is so many important documentation that need translations yet, so it's a field with a lot of work ahead.
Agains, thank you for your help Vogone. Regards, Ivanhercaz | Discusión 23:58, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ivanhercaz: Shall I ask someone to assign you the required user rights on Test-Wikidata? --Vogone (talk) 00:03, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
All right! If someone assign me that user rights I will begin to practice tomorrow. Ivanhercaz | Discusión 00:06, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done. You can start your work. Thank you very much for volunteering! --Vogone (talk) 00:27, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you to you for your help and guidance! Regards, Ivanhercaz | Discusión 11:15, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Vogone, one thing more. When I consider that I'm familiarised, should I tell to you or what have I do? Regards, Ivanhercaz | Discusión 15:32, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If you feel ready, we can discuss about it at Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Translation administrator. Just add your name there. Thanks for your help, --Vogone (talk) 15:34, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Doubts marking translations in test.wikidata

[edit]

Hi Vogone!

I come to you because you already have helped me with the translations and the task of marking it to translate templates. I have been making templates and marking it to translate in test.wikidata. There is two main examples where I have worked: Template:Extracted from and Template:Translatable ―templates invented by me only to practise and not for apply in any wiki―. But I am having a problem with the template parameters, because when I use the template in a page, like in this case, and I set the parameters, it part appears in blank.

I already know how works the marking tool and how I should mark the template ―and another kind of pages―, but I don't want to request the translation administrator right before I solve it and I know why it isn't working fine.

Thanks in advance! I await your answer ―please, {{Ping}} me if you answer here to receive a notification―.

Regards, Ivanhercaz | Discusión 12:08, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Ivanhercaz: There were two minor errors[12]. The parameters need to be defined as well on the page which is actually being transcluded. Kind regards, --Vogone (talk) 20:54, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! Thank you Vogone. I forget to change the template name to call from where I copy the structure, and the I didn't know that I have to call the parameters. I'm going to test something more and then I will request the rights. Regards, Ivanhercaz | Discusión 22:07, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Regarding the conversation on the bot's page, that conversation was just .. a little sad... admittadly, the person had a meltdown because he's a bit sensitive, but was it necessary to flat it say unreliable? I want to help this dispute but not get in the middle of this tough choices. Sheesh. egos are hard to fix. MechQuester (talk) 05:03, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think I did apologise there, but unfortunately Edoderoo is not willing to accept my apologies for the wording. I don't think there is much left which can be done. Kind regards, --Vogone (talk) 05:07, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, No worries. You had to do what you do to ensure compliance. I guess some people take things too personally. MechQuester (talk) 19:21, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Operator is unreliable is *not* what had to be done, and it ain't weird that *that* is taken personally. It will for *ever* be there for others to see in the block-log, so that shitty issue will now follow me for the rest of my life. Edoderoo (talk) 17:53, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I excused myself for that. I offered to change this blocking summary. You denied both. The wording may have been a mistake, but I cannot do anything about it as long as you are unwilling to forgive. Or if I can, please tell me what. --Vogone (talk) 18:45, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm surprised that you still believe that I made a mistake, have to give you excuses, and you think you didn't do anything wrong. I'm am *not* going ever on my knees for you, what do you think? Edoderoo (talk) 21:06, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How does excusing for a mistake correlate with "think[ing] [I] didn't do anything wrong"? Where did I say "you have to give [me] excuses"? Please do not interpret things into my words which are not there. --Vogone (talk) 23:08, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, let's formulate it differently then: you expect all kind of actions from my side, but the only action I've seen from your side is expecting excuses, and excuses from your side that you didn't do anything wrong, and you do not see any reason to withdraw your harsh words any other then "maybe it's not so bad, but wtf". I only see a lonely sysop/crat that in the middle of the night makes weird decisions without any prior discussion, without any discussion, without any idea what's going on, referring back to a long time closed discussion that was not related. All week you've been asking me "to understand your position" but maybe you should also understand someone else's position. I am very very very disappointed in the burocrats on this wikidata-side, that seem to be lone wolves "fighting against evil" that is actually doing good edits. Edoderoo (talk) 08:50, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Again, where do I expect excuses? Is this a language barrier issue? --Vogone (talk) 09:06, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Wikiquote

[edit]

I haven't been here for a while, but I recall Structured Wikiquote being discussed on IRC back when I was active. The test site on Wikilabs seems to be down/moved, so I was wondering if the project has been abandoned, or if it has been moved elsewhere. If it has been abandoned, then that'd be a damn shame, the project had/has a lot of potential. Cheers, --George (Talk · Contribs · CentralAuth · Log) 10:16, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Caliburn: Hi Caliburn. There is indeed nobody working on this right now, but that doesn't mean the project has been abandoned. Currently, the focus seems to be on "Structured Commons". The technical infrastructure for this project might as well be suitable for Wikiquote to some significant extent, but of course it would need (volunteer) developers to work on this. --Vogone (talk) 00:32, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Sveiki, ar galėtumėte peržiūrėti mano užklausą Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Other rights? Norėčiau pildyti duomenis lietuvių kalba, bet kiti administratoriai net neatsakė. Ačiū. --Adamvs (talk) 18:01, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Latviški aprašymai Vikiduomenyse

[edit]

Sveiki. Paminėjau Jus Vikipedijoje – Vikiduomenyse yra 31 491 atvejis, kur kažkam sumaišius latvių ir lietuvių kalbą, nurodytas aprašymas „vācu politiķis“. Ar galėtumėte tai pataisyti botu? Beveik visus būtų galima pakeisti į „vokiečių politikas“, bet kai kuriems toks aprašymas netiktų, todėl galimai reikia tiesiog ištrinti. Adamvs (talk) 11:14, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Atsakiau tenai. --Vogone (talk) 14:11, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Need your input on a policy impacting gadgets and UserJS

[edit]

Dear interface administrator,

This is Samuel from the Security team and I hope my message finds you well.

There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed policy governing the use of external resources in gadgets and UserJS. The proposed Third-party resources policy aims at making the UserJS and Gadgets landscape a bit safer by encouraging best practices around external resources. After an initial non-public conversation with a small number of interface admins and staff, we've launched a much larger, public consultation to get a wider pool of feedback for improving the policy proposal. Based on the ideas received so far, the proposed policy now includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, best practices for gadgets and UserJS developers, and exemptions requirements such as code transparency and inspectability.

As an interface administrator, your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on the policy talk page.

Have a great day!

Samuel (WMF), on behalf of the Foundation's Security team 12:08, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vogone, This message is just to warn you that as of April 1st your logged admin action count will be 4 in the 6 preceding months, unless you'll do some admin action before. Hi Lymantria. I indeed struggled to maintain activity lately, maybe that means it was indeed time to let go. :-) --Vogone (talk) 11:29, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
