The rationale is that hierarchies should be as simple as possible to avoid duplication. For the full taxonomy it would be sufficient to have 2 properties: P105 (taxon rank} and P171 (parent taxon). As Wikipedia currently holds all levels already it is probably not needed. HenkvD (talk) 13:26, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Support: I think this property is great, and I don't find the proposed rationale for deletion persuasive. However, this property seems like one of the clearest examples of redundancy with subclass of, so I would support its deletion. Emw (talk) 04:59, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Oppose: Here's a little demo I did based on that property: Tree of Life. I'd say it has its uses. But my oppose is conditional: I think P171 might be captured by P279, and I am not opposing replacing P171 with P279 in that case. But I am opposing replacing P171 with a set of properties depending on where in the hierarchy you are. That would make things much harder. --Denny (talk) 08:07, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Oppose I don't think we should use P279 in this case. For instance, Nepenthes's parent taxon is Nepenthaceae. The definition is clear. However, "subclass of" can be used in many different ways. It's true that Nepenthes is subclass of Nepenthaceae, but we also can use it in statements like "Nepenthes is subclass of carnivorous plant". Compared with using a separate well-defined "parent taxon" property, it's more difficult to capture the parent taxon from many "subclass of" statements. --Stevenliuyi (talk) 09:09, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Ideally, I think the value of the 'subclass of' property would be the item that most fully captures the superset of properties that define a subject. For taxa, I think that's the parent taxon. Sometimes, like in the case of the carnivorous plant Nepenthes, some interesting property like 'has carnivorous diet' wouldn't be deducible from the parent taxon. For example, Nepenthaceae (the parent taxon of Nepenthes) doesn't have a Wikidata item, and Caryophyllales (the parent taxon of Nepenthaceae) isn't necessarily carnivorous.

For this kind of case -- where some salient property of a class isn't deducible from 'subclass of' -- I think it might make most sense to create use a specific property to capture that information. For example, the carnivorous diet of Nepenthes could be conveyed with a property like 'diet': 'animals'. This approach seems like it would help solve a similar anti-pattern with P31, where information that was really more of a single property was being specified as class information, e.g. people being said to be an instance of/is a spouse. The most natural use of "class" for a taxon may be the parent taxon, but I think we should see that in more general terms: some items will be subclasses of two very different things, and we should be able to deal with that. I think it can all be solved by using

the "instance of" property. For instance, if we use "subclass of" for "parent taxon" and try to build a taxonomic tree based on it, we should just check that every item in the tree is also an instance of taxon. --Zolo (talk) 07:58, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Oppose deletion. Yes, the information could technically be stored using P279 instead. But more specific properties can be helpful, at least in the absence of qualifiers, and Stevenliuyi argues convincingly that that is the case here. I don't find the initial deletion rationale convincing. There's no need to agree in advance some global framework setting out which parent taxons are sensible. If we have a source stating that taxon X's parent taxon is Y, that's all we need. --Avenue (talk) 04:49, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
P171 encourages an anti-pattern: using custom properties when generic properties suffice. It sets a precedent for creating an arbitrary number of domain-specific P31s and P279s. If 'parent taxon' makes sense, then why not 'type of airplane', 'class of chemical', 'building type', etc? Isn't a consistent way of defining an instance's or class's membership in a class preferable to having many domain-specific ways to do the same? Also, as noted in my reply to it, Stevenliuyi's example seems to have some subtle but significant issues in the approach it implies for classification on Wikidata. Comment, I find it rather appealing to use P:P279 (and "P:P31: taxon ?"), but we have a dumb linguistic problem: "subclass" is also a the name of a taxonomic rank, and that may raise quite a few eyebrows.--Zolo (talk) 10:20, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Having a property for each taxon rank for all species is a really bad idea, since it will require orders of magnitude of more data to store and work to maintain than just specifying a parent taxon (whether that's with 'subclass of' or 'parent taxon'). Because of that, I don't think having a taxonomic 'subclass' rank property makes sense, in which case this dumb linguistic problem doesn't exist. Even if we made the bad decision to keep each taxon rank as its own property, I think that's a trivial, easily addressable issue, not a compelling reason to make an arbitrary exception for this one domain of knowledge and diverge from conventions used in established biological ontologies in the Semantic Web (see below). Comment It might be worth noting that very large, established biological ontologies use the standard subclass of (P279) property and not a custom 'parent taxon' property to define parent taxon. UniProt, a consortium of some of the biggest national bioinformatics organizations in the world, uses 'rdfs:subClassOf' (on which 'subclass of' P279 is based) to specify parent taxon. See for example UniProt's structured data on 'dog', defining the parent taxon Canis lupus (gray wolf). The data is easily queryable, as explained here. Emw (talk) 01:43, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
