Widr for Petscan

Hi, I'm using Petscan and everytime I come back to Petscan, I have to re-log into Widar. For a while before, I didn't have to re-login every time. Anyway around this? MechQuester (talk) 19:31, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

This was always the situation for me, could be the cookie preferences of your browser. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 19:32, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
Perhaps. I'll reset my browser then.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by MechQuester (talk • contribs) at 16:30, 7 October 2016‎ (UTC).

Goo1Bot adding improper references

User:Goo1Bot, according to its user page, does not seem to have any bot approval. It is adding children, such as these edits to William Shakespeare. The edit is objectionable for two reasons; one is the child is already in the item so this addition is redundant. The other reason is the reference is to Wikidata, which is an unreliable source. Furthermore, insuring consistency among items (e.g., if item x says x is the father of y, then item y should say y is the child of x) should not be handled by references. If such consistency mechanisms don't already exist, they should be instituted separately from references.

The User:AndreasKasper was warned about the William Shakespeare edit, but continues to make similar edits, working on several items per minute. Jc3s5h (talk) 14:10, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

P2106 - RXNO Ontology, not Gordon-Nummer

User:Kopiersperre recently attempted to repurpose RXNO Ontology (P2106), apparently in order to bypass discussion at Wikidata:Property proposal/Gordon-Nummer (this has been reverted). He also added the property to several artworks, with values for Gordon-Nummer (example). These edits need to be reversed en mass. Related discussion is at:

In the first, prior to the edits in question, I advised Kopiersperre of a workable alternative approach. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:09, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

@Kopiersperre: Any explanation for this change? Indeed this looks very strange. --Succu (talk) 21:29, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
This edit looks rather problematic, from my Google Translate foo. Also, that property proposal looks very much like the users were canvassed, and the majority of which are not adding significant value to the discussion. --Izno (talk) 21:52, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: May I please get an excerpt (QID-Gordon number), that the information is not completely lost? I've proposed P2106 but later discovered, that the best solution is not to have the property but to copy the whole RXNO ontology into Wikidata.--Kopiersperre (talk) 13:18, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
Please refer to the advice I gave you on my talk page. If you follow that, no data need be lost. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:22, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
thumb|RSC Ontology, to be copied to Wikidata @Succu, Pigsonthewing: Ok, let me explain a few things. You can punch me in my face, because I knew, that I was doing wrong. But it just should be a temporary measure. I wanted to ask for scrapping property P2106 since a few weeks, I've talked to Colin Batchelor (RSC) for a solution without it.
On the GLAM thing about Ernst Ludwig Kirchner there was pressure to get something presentable finished. I had no idea how P528 + qualificator could work with Listeria. So I decided to abuse my old property, which would work instantly.
I'm very sorry that I harmed Wikidata. Because nobody noticed my abuse in the beginning I thought that I would fix it by myself when the property is created.--Kopiersperre (talk) 15:27, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Apparent vandalism on Q11814123

Q11814123 used to be the item for the Polish politician Paweł Jaros. It has been taken over to be for the "American internet celebrity" Michael Gibson, with most of the edits being by User:Michaelgibson511

These edits were previously reverted, but then remade again, and this time can't be cleanly reverted as Q27243762 now links to Paweł Jaros's page on Polish Wikipedia.

--Oravrattas (talk) 03:15, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Solved. Removed the link from Q27243762, reverted the edits on Q11814123, merged both items and informed the user about his wrong actions and explained him what the correct procedure is. Mbch331 (talk) 06:40, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Blocking Sjoerddebruin would be rather extreme. Perhaps he could just stop hassling me? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:14, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, just let Pigsonthewing decrease the quality of our data even more by removing a correct reference with additional properties by replacing it with a source from 2008 about a 2012 fact and a source that says the same, but only consists of a bare url. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 16:22, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
In the short while since I suggested, above, that he might stop hassling me, Sjoerddebruin has edited my sig in this section, and deleted a redirect I created, about a minute later, while I was in the process of populating the page to which it redirected. As for "decreasing the quality of our data", I'm prepared to let my contributions to the project as a while speak for me. Though I would point out that some of my reverts to the item in question, which I created and had just rescued from a wrongful deletion, were to stop Sjoerddebruin from removing a valid citation for the statement that the subject is human; see its talk page for a link and my reasoning; so perhaps he might also remove the beam from his own eye? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:37, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
It seems that the edit warring has stopped for now, so the item doesn't seem to need protecting right now. If I've understood it correctly, there are two issues here: whether the reference for the P31 statement is correct and which references the employer statement should have.
Regarding the P31 statement, I agree with Sjoerd that the reference does not support the statement because it does not actually state that he is human. The difficulty in finding citable sources for obvious undisputed statements like "instance of human" is presumably part of the reason why Help:Sources (and more explicitly Help:Sources/Items not needing sources) say that statements like those do not need a reference. If there is disagreement over whether a source supports a statement, I think it is better to err on the side of caution and not include it.
Regarding the employer statement, the sfgate.com page does not seem to support the statement so should not be re-added. As for the other two sources, is there a reason why both can't be added?
- Nikki (talk) 20:32, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
If you are going to quote from Help:Sources/Items not needing sources, (which Sjoerddebruin has also done) then please note that its header states "sources should not be removed from items that already have sources". Finnish with a strange script

I guess this was some kind of mistake. (fit is a version of Finnish spoken in northern Sweden, in Sweden recognised as a language of its own) Do we have any tools to detect similar things? -- Innocent bystander (talk) 11:09, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

We have the tags adding latin script language description in non-latin script and adding non-latin script language description in latin script for descriptions. There doesn't seem to be any for labels or aliases but it should be possible to add some if we think they'd be useful. I'm not aware of any tools for finding all of them, it's quite difficult because you have to check all labels (etc) for the language. The only thing I can think of right now is doing something like this with Quarry. - Nikki (talk) 11:25, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! The fit-language is very small and I am not aware of any wiki-community at all. But the GUI offers adding labels and descriptions in that language in at least parts of Sweden. (Where I live for example, and obviously also in Jönköping where the ip was editing from.) It is possible that it is open also for ip's in parts of Norway and Finland, even if it isn't recognised as a language in Finland and Kvänska is more relevant in Norway. -- Innocent bystander (talk) 10:17, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Q615 protection

Please semi-protect Lionel Messi (Q615) preferably indefinitely. Frequent IP vandalism, popular theme and temporary semi-protected multiple times before. --Jklamo (talk) 02:51, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

I actually protected it indefinitely now. The item was basically always protected since July 2013, with the longest unprotected period having been 23 August 2014 to 3 January 2015 by far. However, the protection status should be reviewed in a couple of years - I guess that the vandals interest will quickly decline when Messi ends his career. --YMS (talk) 05:40, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

I have noticed for a while that there is no a star sign in front of the Thai language link for the article J.K.Rowling though it has been a featured article since last year. No, we have Wikidata:Requests for deletions for, well, requesting deletions; it is not for dealing with spammers; that is a task for administrators. As stated above, "This is a noticeboard for all matters requiring administrator attention". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:55, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
The only action that is needed by an administrator is the deletion of the item. It's the responsibility of the requester to, for example, warn the user. If it continues, then you can ask for further action here (with a more clear message). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 11:59, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
"It's the responsibility of the requester to..." Says who? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:08, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
There's no rule for this, of course. Just like there's no rule that an admin deleting a spam item has to warn the creator. And no rule forbidding admins to take further actions when they handle a deletion request. So if you want an item to be deleted, request deletion for it. If you want an editor to be warned, best do it yourself. If your warnings failed to have any effect, or if your sure that the account won't ever behave, request blocking here. If you just want to report a spam item and have someone else take care of its future, probably the deletion request page is the best place to do, too. --YMS (talk) 14:22, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

TemirovBot

Hi,

Could you please block or remove bot flag from the bot TemirovBot as it uses bot flag for POV-pushing in Crimea items? For example in Simferopol (Q19566), Bakhchysarai (Q158604), Staryi Krym (Q576937), Shcholkine (Q997522) and Aeroflotsky (Q2026780) this bot changed Russia's rank from normal to preferred (keeping Ukraine at normal) and replaced Russian-language human-generated descriptions (like "city in Crimea") with maching-generated descriptions like "city in Republic of Crimea, Russia". This would most likely result with "Russia/Ukraine" being replaced with just "Russia" in wikis that use Wikidata for infoboxes, which is a clear NPOV violation.

This bot seems to have made a lot of such changes (I checked only some 20 Crimean items and found such changes in 5 of them). While this bot also does useful things, POV-pushing is clearly not something a bot should do, thus I would suggest blocking it until its owner changes the code so that such things do not happen. Thanks — NickK (talk) 10:51, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Strange, why not write to me about it first? I am ready to change the description. For me the main lead to the correct data of the essence, the administrative structure, codes administrative division. The wording of belonging to Russian and or Ukrainian is not critical for me. Игорь Темиров (talk) 11:14, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
I don't know what the procedure for POV-pushing by a bot is. The fact that your bot edited dozens (if not hundreds) of Crimean items (but still might have many to go) made me think that stopping the bot is a priority. I am happy however that you stopped the bot yourself and I appreciate that you are ready for discussion — NickK (talk) 16:50, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
Игорь Темиров, can we have a statement about this? Generally speaking, bots should not make any potentially controversial changes to existing descriptions or statements. --YMS (talk) 11:08, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

NickK, YMS, in the "Country" I do "preferred: Ukraine ranked as Russia. "Ukraine" as well as add, if it's not there. In the "description" will remove the mention of the country. I want to note that I think human's description of "a city in the eastern part of the Crimea" less informative than the added bot "city in the Kirov district of the Crimea". Do you agree with these corrections? Игорь Темиров (talk) 11:28, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

A description like "city in the Kirov district of the Crimea" sounds good. Mentioning a country isn't needed and should even be avoided in this case. The rank of all former countries I would put to "normal" and the rank of the Ukraine and Russia to "preferred". --Pasleim (talk) 14:26, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
@Игорь Темиров:, @Pasleim: This is not only about country but also about other things:

This Bot creates large quantities of items without label and description, Special:NewPages. Please block it. --Balû (talk) 07:24, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

A lage amount? All of them I checked have a PubMed ID (P698). So this could be easily fixed. --Succu (talk) 08:20, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
Large amount: yes, 5 in a minute, which must all be corrected. I don't say, it can't be fixed and if you see no problem with items without labels then don't stop it. --Balû (talk) 08:31, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
The bot uses Source MetaData, which probably gives not title for those articles. So the tool should be fix. --Succu (talk) 08:38, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes, the bot uses Source Metadata, which gives no titles for some of the articles, and sometimes, the titles are longer than 250 characters, so too long for being used as labels. I am, however, following up on its edits and adding missing labels by other means (using SPARQL and the PubMed API). --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 12:13, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
this request can be closed, the creation of unlabeled items is a planned procedure, which wasn't known to me. --Balû (talk) 12:37, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
