Motivation[edit]

The genesis of this proposal was a long discussion on the Talk page of inscription (P1684) about modeling complex inscriptions in Wikidata in such a way that they can be used in the Commons "Artwork", "Maps", and "Inscriptions" templates. Commons treats items like coat of arms (Q14659), cartouche (Q2374398), and emblem (Q112110) as "type" of "inscription".

On Wikidata, "inscription" is a monolingual text field. I believe we should model things in Wikidata in a way that makes sense within our ontology, and so I am inclined to restrict "inscription" in Wikidata to text items. I would also like to keep depicts (P180) for items depicted in a work, not added onto them as a layer of metadata.

Several editors suggested that a solution might be a new property for these non-text "inscriptions". Suggested subjects for this property include map elements like compass roses, map scale, legend/map key, North arrow; and coats of arms, graphic (non-text) monograms, seals, stamps, pottery marks, watermarks, and reign marks on Chinese ceramics for other types of artworks. I believe "instance or subclass" of coat of arms (Q14659), map element (Q105825897), design element (Q55412936), mark (Q57248625), and symbol (Q80071) covers all of these.

Suggested valid qualifiers would include:

For a text inscription inside a cartouche, I suggest two statements:

  • <has graphical element> "cartouche" <has part> "inscription"
  • <inscription> "(text string)" (along with the appropriate qualifiers)
