Signatures and semi-linguistic markings[edit]
Sometimes, inscriptions have can be documented by both a linguistic content and a non-linguistic but cearly identifiable semantic content. Some examples: a signature, a collector stamp, a coat of arms with a family name. Should we use this property for them ?
Some possibilities:
- Liberty Leading the People (Q29530)inscription (P1684)Eug. Delacroix
instance of (P31)signature (Q188675) - Liberty Leading the People (Q29530)has graphical element (P9344)signature (Q188675)
inscription (P1684)Eug. Delacroix - or event: has graphical element (P9344) <signature of Eugène Delacroix>, linking to an item about the signature of Eugène Delacroix. --Zolo (talk) 11:23, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- My intitial thought was to use both - inscription (P1684) for the linguistic content and has graphical element (P9344) cartouche (Q368205) has part(s) (P527) inscription (Q1640824) for the graphic, but I am open to other constructions. I like
- for specific cases where the inscription does not require translation, etc. - PKM (talk) 21:03, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Zolo: And I have used this on my prototype modeling exercise: map of the counties of England (Q105799311)has graphical element (P9344)map scale (Q1914828)
inscription (P1684)Scala Miliarium (la) - PKM (talk) 23:42, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Coat of arms [of?] person[edit]
I have used coat of arms like this:
- Anne Russell Lady Herbert later Countess of Worcester (Q106089814)has graphical element (P9344)coat of arms (Q14659)
symbolizes (P4878)Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester (Q377327)
But I wonder if we should bow to conventional usage and allow:
- Anne Russell Lady Herbert later Countess of Worcester (Q106089814)has graphical element (P9344)coat of arms (Q14659)
of (P642)Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester (Q377327)

- After some additional thought, I have added of (P642) as an allowed qualifier, and I am going to preferentially use that to link a coat of arms to a person. - PKM (talk) 18:58, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Missing qualifiers[edit]
Clearly I missed has part(s) (P527) as an allowed qualifier in my property proposal - see my awkward handling of "dividers" at Q105799311#P9344 where it would be much simpler to say the linear scale <has part> dividers, instead of the other way around.
Is anything else missing? - PKM (talk) 23:46, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Added has part(s) (P527). - PKM (talk) 18:59, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- I certainly meant to include has pattern (P5422) on the qualifiers list. Adding. - PKM (talk) 19:25, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Update Inscription template[edit]
@Jarekt, Zolo: I have added this property to a number of paintings and maps - can someone update the Commons "Inscription/Artwork" templates to recognize this property? Thanks! - PKM (talk) 21:32, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- I will look into it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:24, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
Added allowed qualifier[edit]
I have allowed quantity (P1114). - PKM (talk) 22:59, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
