Wah-Wah

Gracias. Huuzzah (talk) 13:32, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

✓ Done blocked for a week --Ameisenigel (talk) 23:07, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Ameisenigel just deleted some pages of the first IP and blocked that one for a week. I deleted two pages from the second IP, but only blocked it for 24 hours, as considering it is an IPv6 it is likely dynamic. EPIC (talk) 23:08, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Blocking an IPv6 /128 is guaranteed to be a losing proposition because it is de facto dynamic. In practice, everything on the RHS of a /64 is assigned to the same user, same connection, same device, for them to do as they please. Elizium23 (talk) 21:47, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
I'll start off with 24 hours for the IPv6 address, the block will expire in an hour and the IP is likely dynamic. Should they repeat editing unconstructively, I will consider a longer block. EPIC (talk) 22:06, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
It's not clear that you understand what I said: a /128 is not really an "address" but an ephemeral Interface ID which any user can change at will; it is not a viable method to block abusive users. Kudos to @Ameisenigel: who's imposed a correct block on the /64 block, which is the standard minimum block. Elizium23 (talk) 04:27, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I did understand what you were talking about regarding rangeblocks - what I meant is that I blocked for a day which would've most likely helped in that case as the IP address likely was dynamic, and thus it would probably get them to stop if they don't come back on another IP later. Either way I just saw that recently Ameisenigel rangeblocked that one. EPIC (talk) 10:17, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Report concerning sleeper sock accounts

Reasons: These accounts has been confirmed to be part of sockpuppetry on either idwiki or enwiki. Even though it seems that the accounts hasn't made any contributions (yet), the rate of edits Made by the sock-er through some IP edits has been increasing lately on idwiki. Preventing only, these accounts are the sleepers accounts that I found has been left behind. Thank you.:) Nyilvoskt (talk) 18:04, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

To be clear, all of these three accounts have edited Wikidata. Are you sure you're not confusing them with someone else? —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:07, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
@Koavf Sorry if I didnt provided enough proof it seems. I'm pretty sure they are sockaccounts of the subjects I mean. It's seems for non-Indonesian speaker, the edits might be good-faith constructive, but no. Their edits are just disruptive and their usual behavior can be pointed as following:
e.g. Ibu kota oblast ... "Capital city of ... oblast" -> Kota di Rusia "City in Russia"
  • disinformation
e.g. Organisasi Islam "Islam organisation" -> Denominasi Islam "Islam Denomination")
  • wrong grammatical usage
(e.g. Pemain sepak bola asal ... "Football player from ..." -> Pemain sepak bola di ... "Football player in ...")
  • massive edit rate
Along with that, the sockmaster oftenly moving page massively (mostly in idwiki;example) and mostly done at late night and early morning in Indonesian time (around 19:00 UTC to 23:00 UTC). Aside from the checkuser, all accounts above meet atleast 2 or all criterias as of WP:DUCK. Please understand that some-A LOT-of edits seems hasn't been reverted yet, not because they are constructive, but because there isn't enough contributors to revert the edits, even not idwiki recovered from edits the socks already did. I guess this enough? :/ Nyilvoskt (talk) 18:58, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
That's fine--the sockpuppetry on other wikis is enough, I think and as someone who doesn't speak Indonesian, I can peace together from what you are writing and translations from DuckDuckGo that something seems off. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:28, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Consistent vandalism

Hello, an anonymous IP from Italy (who is vandalizing also articles on it.wiki) is constantly removing sourced info from the items Stadio Olimpico (Q159884) and Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (Q133566). They acts using several dynamic IPs thus there's no way to control their edits. Blackcat 01:28, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

@Blackcat: Which IP do you mean? Multiple IP addresses have edited both items. EPIC (talk) 10:15, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
@EPIC:, namely 2a02:b023:8010:97c9:d1a5:905b:7b67:1715 and 82.84.119.118; they act through several IP and also use trolling edit summary (see diff) -- Blackcat 11:49, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

@EPIC:, ok. I'll report here if they does it again. -- Blackcat 14:12, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Once again you've only blocked the /128 which is entirely ineffective. Please consider the standard best-practice of Wikimedia administrators and block the /64 which is assigned to devices by ISPs. Elizium23 (talk) 16:47, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
First off, that is in decision of the admins. And secondly, checking the page histories there are multiple IP ranges who have edited them. Rangeblocking only one IPv6 range would thus not do much. EPIC (talk) 16:58, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I've blocked at least the most recent one, 2a02:b023:8010:97c9::/64, for one week. I'll see if it actually does something - an IPv6 range bigger than that would be way too big to block. EPIC (talk) 17:04, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Additive clausel to Wikidata:Notability, related to Commons

I think we really need an amendment additive clausel to Wikidata:Notability #1, point 4, related to Wikimedia Commons. One last funny discussion: Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions/Archive/2024/01/01#Q119906811. Namely, I propose the following.

Category items with a sitelink only to Wikimedia Commons are not permitted, unless either a) there is a corresponding main item which has a sitelink to a Commons gallery or b) the item is used in a Commons-related statement, such as category for pictures taken with equipment (P2033). Non-category items with a sitelink only to Wikimedia Commons are also not permitted given that the item is not an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity that can be described using serious and publicly available references.

Text in bold is possible amendment. Suggestions? Estopedist1 (talk) 07:03, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

"Category items" are items with instance of (P31): Wikimedia category (Q4167836) claims, thus this amendment does not help you at all. The item in question is about a human. —MisterSynergy (talk) 07:21, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
@MisterSynergy: sorry, my word "amendmend" is not correct. I mean additive clausel, which is showed in bold. Hence, we can grasp all categories from Commons (categories itself, humans, musical groups, organizations etc.) Estopedist1 (talk) 11:47, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Wouldn’t it be easier to change the notability criteria as follows:
  1. It contains at least one valid sitelink to a page on Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, Wikiquote, Wikinews, Wikibooks, Wikidata, Wikispecies, or Wikiversity, or Wikimedia Commons.
    1. Category items with a sitelink only to Wikimedia Commons are not permitted, unless either a) there is a corresponding main item which has a sitelink to a Commons gallery or b) the item is used in a Commons-related statement, such as category for pictures taken with equipment (P2033).
If it’s important, it will fall under WD:N #2 (or #3). --Emu (talk) 12:19, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for posting this. I think it's important that we resolve this issue. (Although I think there's just as big a problem with smaller Wikipedias that are slow to clear out spam.)
I agree with Emu's version. In particular, I don't think it makes sense to justify a N1 exception on the basis that the item doesn't meet N2. (For backwards-compatibility, I recommend that we avoid renumbering the items when deleting N1.4.)⅜
I think that a policy change like this is a question for the community to resolve, not for administrators, so maybe this is the wrong venue. Or maybe you're just gathering initial feedback for a later RFC. Bovlb (talk) 18:21, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
We have had several lengthy discussions (WD:PC, Wikidata_talk:Notability, at least one RfC) roughly 2018–2021 related to items for Commons categories, and there has always been pressure to relax our notability policy in favor of more items for Commons categories. The current policy, which I am not a fan of, is a result of those discussions. As much as I would like to see a stricter policy, I don't think this is a viable path forward. I think we should much rather establish a clear procedure how to *require* serious references on a per-statement basis, or not accept otherwise unsourced statements altogether when in doubt regarding promotional activities. —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:49, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
I found a couple of previous discussions.
Are people really arguing that we need to accept any vanity page where the subject has worked out how to create a Commons category? (I don't imagine that the Commons community appreciates being the starting point for spammers.) Or is there an underlying structural need for certain Commons categories? If we added a new exception along the lines of "Items with only a category sitelink to Wikimedia Commons are not permitted, unless ...", then how would we complete that in a way that supports Commons but doesn't facilitate spam? Bovlb (talk) 19:10, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
A lot of those discussions—and there were many more—circled around the Wikidata infobox at Commons which they pretty much place on every category page, thus generating "structural need" (data use in a Wikimedia project) anyways.
The issues with Commons are basically twofold:
  1. they have a lax notability policy and are unable to deal with/review the large amount of promotional content that is uploaded to their project (we have similar problems by ourselves, though)
  2. the structured data that they want to migrate/mirror to Wikidata is complementary (to the core content, i.e. media files), unsourced meta data in infoboxes or categories, thus hardly verifiable; this may seem okay for Commons, but not for Wikidata
As I have expressed in many discussions in the past, I am unhappy with how it turned out for us, but there was in fact a lot of pressure to ease our policies and this has eventually happened. My impression is that in the recent year or two the situation has gotten slightly less bad, but Commons categories have remained an easy path to Wikidata notability until today. —MisterSynergy (talk) 21:29, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
The thing about Commons is that they have an entirely different culture and mission from your typical Wikipedia, and indeed Wikidata is another unicorn that doesn't match either category.
On Commons, their aim is to build a repository of free media for the public, full stop. It was indeed founded to support the Wikipedias and supply content for their articles, but the Commons mission is beyond that, and they don't consider themselves bound by Wikipedia's concerns for scope and notability.
To that end, even their username and account policies work toward this: they don't prohibit commercial entities from promoting themselves there, because a lot of times, it is the entity itself that needs to furnish licenses to the content they're uploading. If Denny's wants some photos there, a Denny's employee can create an account, upload and license the Denny's content: that's clearly prohibited by COI regulations in most Wikipedia spaces.
So as long as they determine content as "in-scope" for the project, that is, having some sort of educational purpose or benefit to the public, they will not care about strictures placed by Wikipedia-oriented projects, because supporting us is not their primary mission. Elizium23 (talk) 04:36, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I mean, it’s not just smaller Wikipedias that are slow to clear out spam. There is a whole language edition devoted to not-quite-existing objects and database junk of all sorts and it’s almost impossible to do anything about that. --Emu (talk) 21:09, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
at the moment we have to focus on one topic. If we will implement Emu suggestion. Id est, removing Wikimedia Commons from WD:N #1, and removing WD:N1.4. Then Commons-related stuff should be resolved. In a result: Commons categories e.g. for 7-year old tennis enthusiast may stay in Commons (e.g. Commons:Category:Jekaterina Jeritševa), but not allowed to have a entry in Wikidata Estopedist1 (talk) 21:36, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Your complains about duplicate information and about pirate and spam sites should not be pointed to User:YANN92340. The identifiers at hand are legitimately added to Wikidata, hence one cannot accuse a user for indeed using them. If you think the identifiers should be removed, there is possibility to request their deletion. The links to non-working sites you mention all work for me. The DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN seems to be due to a local problem at your side. Then only the unverified ([14]) remains. The way to deal with that is try to discuss it with YANN92340 and see if a source can be found, in stead of attacking each other. I block both of you for a week from editing Alain Delon (Q106529) and call for finding consensus for this last of issues. @Seva Seva: other issues you have raised here, are no issues. Once again, I ask you to change your aggressive tone, stop bullying, baseless accusations of vandalism and intimidation. When you talk about "my behavior", you forget to say about your behavior, which consists in aggressively promoting your own point of view, tarnishing the opponent as a "vandal" (even if you yourself were wrong and later admit it). Please, follow WD:NPA and WD:AGF. According to Lymantria decision, I suggest to go to the discussion page and determine: "are there any sources for awarding the medal?". request to restore two data objects

The two data objects Q116867577 and Q116867604 have now been deleted twice. The two data objects clearly meet the third point of Wikidata's notability criteria. Ameisenigel augments with the fact that the statement position held (P39)editor-in-chief (Q589298)of (P642)SME (Q897968)/The Slovak Spectator (Q1237701) makes the data objects superfluous. That may be true, but that does not mean that the data object does not meet the third point of the notability criteria.

In addition, such combined data objects can also help users. Here with editors-in-chief you can discuss this, as there is also the property editor-in-chief (P5769). But let's just take the data object member of the National Assembly of Suriname (Q17268790). After the explanation of Ameisenigel, you can also make this data object unnecessary using the statement position held (P39)member of parliament (Q486839)of (P642)National Assembly (Q1760847). But I wouldn't do that because the data object is helpful for users. The data object allows you to easily display the members of the National Assembly of Suriname via the query service. But if you were to use the statement instead, this would not be possible for a simple Wikidata user. The qualifications require – I'll call it – a detour to the query service, which ordinary Wikidata users are not aware of.

Finally, the most important reason why the data objects should be restored: The data objects are relevant positions. Because both SME (Q897968) and The Slovak Spectator (Q1237701) are relevant newspapers for the German-language Wikipedia, which means that the editors-in-chief also immediately become relevant for the German-language Wikipedia. So from my point of view you can say that the position here is also notable for Wikidata. That's why I ask for the data objects to be restored. --Gymnicus (talk) 23:49, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Interested to know the outcome of this. I've always used of (P642) when adding editors of publications, but of (P642) is being deprecated so wondered what the replacement would be. Creating data items for editor per publication (as done above) seems a reasonable solution as they clearly pass Wikidata's notability guidelines:
"It refers to an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity that can be described using serious and publicly available references.
It fulfils a structural need, for example: it is needed to make statements made in other items more useful." Piecesofuk (talk) 10:24, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Zubryckiy (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC))Reasons: Edit warring Has been conducting editing wars by changing Ukrainian letters for quite some time:

Which does not correspond to Ukrainian spelling. It also makes destructive changes of a similar nature. I ask the administrators to take administrative action to stop such destructive actions. Thank you. ―Jphwra (talk) 10:23, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

I seem to have been the one who blocked this user on svwiki a few years back. Don't know whether the edits here on Wikidata are actually destructive, however. EPIC (talk) 10:33, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
destructive, in addition, he has a personal limitation because of this in the Ukrainian-language section. So here is 100% blocking for Zubryckiy. Jphwra (talk) 14:05, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
previous blocking was related to @Ymblanter. Maybe he can help? Estopedist1 (talk) 08:26, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I find the user editing non-constructively (they were removing sourced information which did not conform to their POV), and I first extensively warned them and then blocked them. For whatever reason, they switched to Ukrainian which I do not speak (presumably considering my warning as a part of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict). Based on that incident, I did not get an impression that they are net positive for Wikidata, but I did not study their contribution in detail, and, since I do not speak Ukrainian, I have no idea who is right and who is wrong in this Ґ issue. What I am pretty sure about is that they have a battleground attitude. Ymblanter (talk) 08:38, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
His contribution is destructive and he has a personal restriction on such actions in our section. And here he bypasses this personal limitation not for the first time, generating conflicts already in the section itself. So I think blocking should be used here. Good day. I have identified these accounts that appear to be operated by an owner or employee (Q118220514) of 516 Media (Q117705129). I don't think any of their created items and edits are for people that are notable, but I am having a hard time tracing through the large interconnected web of items they've made, presumably to imply structural use notability. In addition, many of the items have connections from "different from" properties, many of which are connected to items they couldn't be reasonably confused with.

I've been logging a large number of items for a bulk deletion request for more than an hour and am getting frustrated because the web keeps on expanding. Should I continue on with creating a bulk deletion request or could an administrator intervene? -- William Graham (talk) 21:46, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

Edit to add that most of the items are businesses and small religious organizations that don't seem to have any external identifier properties besides social media, open corporation data, and google knowledge identifiers. Searching for serious sources on them has not been productive. -- William Graham (talk) 21:50, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing this up here, I was also starting to prepare a bulk deletion request, but not so far into it as you, it seems. Would it be helpful to remove the linked items through "different from" in a first step? --Dorades (talk) 12:39, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Deletion of P1629 from properties

I am getting numerous notifications that Wikidata item of this property (P1629) has been deleted from properties that I worked on. There is a discussion about deprecating this property at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property_talk:P1629#Mark_this_property_as_deprecated but there is significant opposition, so I do not understand why the property is now being deleted en masse from other properties. Supposedly it should be replaced by other newer properties, but where is the communication to all property creators about what we are now supposed to be doing?

Some examples of the deletion that I've been notified about: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Property:P12107&diff=next&oldid=2003979546 and https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Property:P11867&diff=next&oldid=2048243114 and https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Property:P11902&diff=next&oldid=1938525649 AdamSeattle (talk) 21:38, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

There appears to be a related discussion at Topic:Xx3lrm9fd5apmdyv. CC @Swpb Bovlb (talk) 00:07, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
As I've explained in several places, I haven't done anything that requires agreement to deprecate P1629 - I've only been moving statements that were using P1629 incorrectly to instead use the correct properties, based entirely on the existing, explicit purpose of the properties involved. As pointed out by User:Pigsonthewing, P1629 was only intended for exact matches, and so statements that use P1629 to link external ID properties to databases or issuing organizations are, and have always been, incorrect. Replacing those incorrect statements individually would not be controversial, so doing so en masse shouldn't be either. The only places where a P1629 statement has been removed without a more appropriate statement being added is where such a statement was already present. As it happens, I'm not currently in favor of deprecating P1629 at all; migrating its misuses is a different matter entirely. Swpb (talk) 17:24, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Veverve has repeatedly reverted the page to say that the book was published in 1908. The discussion of his similar complaint at the Wikipedia Administrators' noticeboard has already established that it is a well-supported fact the book was published in 1905, and Veverve told me himself that he does not believe it was published in 1908, so I saw no reason not to restore the correction of the year to 1905. - Cengime (talk) 20:21, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
his similar complaint at the Wikipedia Administrators' noticeboard has already established that it is a well-supported fact the book was published in 1905: claiming something on multiple Wikiprojects does not turn something into a a well-supported fact. A well-supported fact is that you edit-warred at this item. Veverve (talk) 20:25, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
I refer the interested reader to the evidence adduced in the aforesaid discussion and I note Veverve's silence as to any substantive reason to dispute it. - Cengime (talk) 20:29, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
  • Everyone take a step back and look at this with some perspective please. We're fighting over whether the year is 1905 or 1908. Looking at the relevant wp articles it looks like 1905 is most commonly used. If there are serious sources that say 1908, I suggest that the year be taken out of the description and 1908 added to the publication date property alongside 1905 with the appropriate references. If this needs to be done, please give the appropriate references here rather than continuing to edit war on the page and I (or another neutral third party) can add it. And a general note that further edit warring by either side will be considered disruptive editing - please resolve the conflict here instead. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 22:19, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
I agree with your proposal of removing the date until a RS for the date is given. Veverve (talk) 07:17, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Why do you think the book was not published in 1905? - Cengime (talk) 13:24, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Good catch - for now I've removed the date from the description, it isn't adding value there anyway (no similar books that the year would help disambiguate from). 1905 is still, as far as I can tell, likely the correct year and remains in the year property on that item. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 01:43, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Sock puppetry report

Greetings, folks:

It is my belief that this person abuses illicit "residential proxy" services across Italy to hop among IPv4 addresses which are compromised from ordinary users of residential ISPs. Therefore it is futile to block, or even rangeblock, the addresses after they are used. Nevertheless, I present a sampling of recently-used addresses as demonstration of the ongoing LTA disruption.

I don't have any requests for admins or a suitable resolution for this, other than: please keep vigilant to know the style of this user, when he eventually returns. Elizium23 (talk) 23:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Report concerning User:Marcus Cyron

Marcus Cyron (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC))Reasons: Vojtěch Dostál asked them last year no to remove sourced statement if they are false, but instead to use rank to deprecate them. I have asked them the same thing at the end of December, on two separate places (Talk:Q27178026 and on my talk page). The user states that they are doing so in order to adress "data waste", yet they don't see any problem in adding dozens or hundreds of labels and aliases with nameGuzzler. They also states that they "will always and in future delete inaccurate data", which I effectively spotted yesterday on Q2709652, where they removed two sourced statements. For me this is nothing short of vandalism and this hampers Wikidata's aim in becoming a secondary database, as stated in Wikidata:Introduction. I kindly asks an administrator to consider taking action, if only symbolic as I think that a majority of the user's contributions are good contributions, and remind them that one can't just do as they please if the data doesn't go their way and to use instead the tools that we have at disposition (namely ranks) to address errors in sources. --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 09:21, 20 January 2024 (UTC) ―Jahl de Vautban (talk) 09:21, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

@Jahl de Vautban Please only use the word “vandalism” if edits are done in bad faith. There is no reason to suspect Marcus is acting with the intent of damaging the project – quite the opposite, as you are rightfully admitting yourself.
That being said, @Marcus Cyron: Please do not delete properly sourced statements even if they are wrong or imprecise. You can of course delete instances where the source doesn’t support the statement (see also Topic:Xxo05id81afja1t4) but this source does seem to support the statement you have deleted. As you know, I have relied on your expertise in this field in the past and you know it better than the Czech national library – but that’s not the point here. Your expertise is needed in ranking the statements, not in deleting inaccurate (but sourced) statements. --Emu (talk) 15:16, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

Could we please stop IPs from editing optical microscope (Q912313)? Someone keeps changing the date of invention. It gets reverted quickly, but this has been going on for a long time. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:34, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Request for undeletion

May I request for the following to be un-deleted? It has been and I just stumbled upon the company's wikidata article when I was researching about them as a possible customer. Since I have a Wikidata account, I figured it would be nice to clean it up but it got deleted due to me.

Can we just rollback other items I made? Like creating Wikidata articles for the founders (as I saw on their LinkedIn and Website). I would absolutely feel guilty and it is unfair for the company if their Wikidata article that has been there for years already gets deleted because some third-party tampered with it. That's very unjust, right? I hope my appeal makes sense. I just find it very unfair and this would make me feel guilty for days since it's because I cleaned it up.

Thank you so much for your kind consideration!

I appreciate your understanding regarding its deletion, which was based on notability concerns, especially since it was initially linked to an English Wikipedia page that has since been removed. To move forward, I kindly request that you provide reliable and verifiable sources that clearly demonstrate the notability of Quality Logo Products. Upon reviewing such evidence, we can engage in a constructive discussion about potentially restoring the article. Saroj (talk) 09:14, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Block of Frettiebot

Just a note that I just blocked Frettiebot due to continued problems in spite of feedback. There are some issues discussed at User talk:Frettiebot that the community should be resolving, such as how to handle bots edit warring with humans, and the use of deprecated rank. I'm happy for any admin to unblock if the block is no longer necessary. Bovlb (talk) 18:09, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Issue from discussion is fixed. --Frettie (talk) 19:23, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Please consider unblocking now. I think the block is no longer necessary as the bug in question has been purpotedly fixed. Also, let's not mix this bug (which I have never encountered and must be indeed a rare sight) with the never-ending complaints of (mostly now-blocked) sockpuppets about the bot's correct use of deprecated rank, which has been recently confirmed by a community-wide Project Chat discussion - that issue is unrelated. Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 20:38, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
I have hesitantly unblocked (for now) based on botop's claim that the specific bug has been fixed, but I think we have some wider issues to consider here.
There's been a lot of discussion, and I have not yet read all of it, but the relevant facts here seem to be:
  1. The bot is importing information from National Library of the Czech Republic (Q1967876) via NL CR AUT ID (P691).
  2. This information is largely accurate and useful.
  3. There is, however, a significant error rate, with many problem reports to the talk page. For example, humans are being conflated with scholarly articles. The same (unique) identifier is being assigned to multiple items. We don't expect any human or bot to be 100% perfect, but it is important how we deal with repeated errors.
  4. A recurring theme in the problem reports is that when humans remove the errant claims, the bot will edit war to restore them.
  5. The botop's position on resolving the edit wars is that human editors should use deprecated rank instead of removing the claim. This is not the first time this approach has been raised, but I believe it is still controversial, and it is certainly not well-known.
  6. The recent block proximately arose from the bot edit warring despite the fact that a deprecated rank had been used on the relevant claim.
  7. These edits do not clearly fall under any RFP for this bot.
So I think we need clearer policy about:
  • How do we deal with correcting bot errors?
  • What is the correct approach to stop bots from edit warring?
  • Do we care about bot scope creeping away from RFPs?
Bovlb (talk) 21:43, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
  • Deprecation is the way to go, and it is not the bot to blame if editors do not get this right. This should really be known by now. The bot must consider deprecated claims as well, of course.
  • Many bots operate outside of approved tasks. The bot policy does not clearly state what we want to achieve with these task approvals, and the entire process is just a nuisance for experienced bot operators. It takes a week of time to go through the approval process in order to give the community to provide input, but usually there is no input made, and no code is being reviewed. It is important to remember that the bot policy was initially drafted based on Wikipedia experiences in late 2012 and it has conceptually not much changed since, despite the most prevalent way of editing here being automated (bot) editing, unlike at Wikipedia. The bot policy does not fit into this project.
MisterSynergy (talk) 00:03, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I think people balk at the idea of using deprecated rank on claims that should never have been added. That a claim is associated with a source does not mean that the source supports the claim. Referring to Help:Ranking#Deprecated_rank, I see: "All statements, including deprecated ones, must be verifiable in the sense that a source makes the claim whether or not the claim is true." This usage of deprecated rank does not appear to be be sanctioned by the documentation. One of them should change.
An example of a reported problem that I did not list above is of adding general occupations when a more specific occupation is already present. Arguably this is both useful and necessary in order to preserve the sourcing information, especially if the more specific claim is unsourced. Unfortunately, it annoys infobox users on client projects and they come here to tidy it up. A deprecated rank is not appropriate here, but there is a case for using preferred rank instead.
I agree that bot policy is somewhat cumbersome and burdensome and it is often unnecessary to go through to process for small changes to bot scope. At the same time it is often useful to get community input before any large-scale task that has the potential to cause disruptions, and experience has shown that editors are not always good judges of whether they are going to cause disruption. Regardless, Wikidata:Bots#Bot_accounts says: "Bot accounts should not be used for contributions that do not fall within the scope of the bot's designated tasks." If this isn't what we intend, then we should change the policy, not ignore it.
"This should really be known by now." New user education is a struggle, and ranks are not obvious in the UI.
Bovlb (talk) 01:14, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
@Bovlb I don't think we should discuss these issues at Administrator's noticeboard but some of them seem important. Please bring any general problems you've encountered to Project chat or other more exposed page and tag us. For issues related specifically to Frettiebot, let's discuss on Frettiebot's talk page. BTW, thanks for unblocking Frettiebot, I hope the bug in question had really been fixed. Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 10:46, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I posted a pointed at Wikidata:Project_chat#Dealing_with_bot_errors,_bot_edit_wars,_and_bot_scope_creep.
I think that we can all agree that, if a source supports a claim, but it is generally believed to be untrue, then we can represent this by deprecating the claim. The key question here is that, if a source does not support a claim, but a bot reaches the erroneous conclusion that it does, is it reasonable for us to have an unsupported deprecated claim merely as a mechanism to prevent the bot from edit warring? Bovlb (talk) 17:21, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
We need statistics estimating how many frettiebot additions are unhelpful, both as a %age and in absolute terms. I would include here both wrong statements, and overly vague statements. If its wrong because of a bad bot, they should be removed, and the bot suspended quickly and fixed and a plan made to systematically revert the errors before restarting. If its wrong because the source is wrong, there is some merit in leaving them but deprecated. Vague statements are just clutter.
I think frettiebot needs to be altered to
1) remember what it did, and not attempt to do the same thing twice.
2) Check before proposing a classification whether a more accurate classification exists, and not bothering with the vague one.
As seen in a long thread on Project chat, frettie seems reluctant to engage with his critics. Vicarage (talk) 17:40, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
It's not true, I abstained from the discussion because I didn't feel it appropriate to get involved. In the current situation (few days), I reacted very quickly (and i fixed error in few hours from bugreport!). Things you mentioned have long since been resolved in the previous discussion. It is technically very difficult for a bot to remember what it has already done and if, why? But whatever, we've already had this discussion once, I understand you have a different opinion, but that doesn't mean the same discussion needs to be had again. --Frettie (talk) 20:45, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
Why can't your bot log what its done, and compare new work with the log. 'sort | uniq -d' would do it. Clearly the problem wasn't resolved if its been raised again here by others. Vicarage (talk) 22:14, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
This was also part of an earlier discussion. In short, it's difficult (because there is a big data) and then the bot loses the ability to reasonably update the data. It is good to accept that there are incremental imports, not just one time imports.--Frettie (talk) 08:12, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
@Bovlb The key issue here is that this particular bot does not "reach a conclusion" by itself. All data are completely based on matching of identifiers present in the bibliopraphical entries. I.e. the bot does not itself reconcile by eg. name or date of birth. It's a common misconception. Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 08:45, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
[Not admin] I stand by what I said in the previous lenghty discussion and what was already said here previously: deprecating the claim instead of blindly removing them is the way to go. Of course some are blatant mistakes (on that specific point it would help if someone had editing rights on the database being imported, so as to quickly correct errors) or some values are too broad and "useless" (for what use exactly?), but that is IMHO beside the point. Wikidata should collect all those mistakes and inaccuracies to allow for error reporting and diversity in modelling knowledge, because Wikidata is a secondary database per Wikidata:Introduction. On the specific point of users from others project being frustrated by Wikidata, I could easily say the same about unmergeable duplicates, because there are two pages on the wiki, or wrong data being imported from infoboxes. That doesn't mean that my only option is to go on the page and delete it. --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 10:15, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
"... I could easily say the same about unmergeable duplicates, because there are two pages on the wiki, or wrong data being imported from infoboxes. That doesn't mean that my only option is to go on the page and delete it." Wonderful and accurate! --Frettie (talk) 17:15, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

VRT assistance needed

Dear Wikidata admins, the m:VRT once in a while receives request about Wikidata, mostly when users want to appeal account blocks or are affected by IP range blocks. Are there any admins interested in joining the VRT to process such requests? --Krd 12:31, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

I joined VRT a couple of years ago. I worked on a few tickets, but didn't find much related to Wikidata. When I finally saw a VRT ticket mentioned here and tried to follow up, I found that my account had been closed for inactivity. It didn't seem worth asking for it to be reopened for one ticket if that was just going to happen every time. Bovlb (talk) 19:46, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

Report concerning User:CFA1877

CFA1877 (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC))Reasons: I realized today that this user has been systematically reverting almost every edit since September 2023. The fundamental principle of assuming good faith has not been met, I haven't been asked at all about my edits on my user talk page, and much of my work has simply been thrown away.

The list of reversions is as massive as it is absurd. My edits on one entity are reverted, but the same edit made by someone else on the same entity in another language is respected. Notice that we are not talking about complex and controversial scenarios: we are talking about basic tasks like adding missing labels or descriptions in Asturian language to entities. Some random examples: encyclopedia article, US patent, asteroid label, category, category. I wrote him on his talk page but he has a completely opposite point of view and he's still doing the things he's been doing since September.

I'm out of options, therefore I write this report here. Thanks. ―YoaR (talk) 19:03, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

For months we have clashed because this user has behavior more typical of a political activist than a user from Wikidata. When a disagreement arises, he always has an answer for everything, he is always in possession of the absolute truth. When the conversation reaches a point, make it clear that he is not going to argue or answer. In those situations, it doesn't leave much room for other kind of action. Instead of seeking a consensus (or a solution), for months it has limited itself to reversing or insisting again on its discussed actions. And in the end this problem has poisoned everything. His attitude reaches the point of personal mockery.
Outside the Asturias region, this user translates names without any basis. Simply put, many objects (localities, streets, buildings) do not have their own name in the Asturian language. As happens in many other languages. The last battle that he has started it has been due to Asturianize the names from streets of cities in Andalusia (for example: 1, 2, 3, 4). The issue has reached a point where he knows he is acting badly (he makes adhoc translations without basis), but he doesn't care. Now comes the victimhood, when for months it has brought things to this point.
I understand that he has used an exhaustion tactic, to see who will throw in the towel first. And he has only resorted to the Administrators noticeboard when he has seen that this tactic has not worked. I am the first who does not want to spend time on this issue, but I am tired of this user's contempt and disregard for me. CFA1877 (talk) 19:29, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

For the benefit of those who cannot access the Fox5 link, it's a puff piece on Jean Louis Hardy and his company ENG2. Fox 5 San Diego is a legitimate local news station affiliated with the Fox network. It's not marked as an advertisement or press release, but there is no individual byline, only "Impact+". It also features a Founder's Story video where Daniel Robbins interviews Jean Louis Hardy. Again, it's something of a puff piece.
