90.191.81.65 User contributions

 1. By patrolling new editions (tools.wmflabs.org/pltools/rech/) I see a very big amount of editions at this IP; some of them looks OK (adding interwiki links, descriptions, aliases), most of them seems very unusual - specially by anonymous users: Items removals, merging, deleting many properties etc; some of them looks like vandalism. It is an Estonian user from Tallin, using dynamic address
 2. Is any way, by patrolling, to:
 • mark various editions as higher risky (elevating risk level)? Greetings --Jasc PL (talk) 13:29, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
 • undo/delete all editions from IP by flood vandalism - something like "patrol xx editions" by user?

BTW - is any way to appeal to the registered users editing English elements here (so often knowing it) to add also labels, descriptions and aliases in English also, so they could be easy translated to other languages? --Jasc PL (talk) 14:19, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

@Jasc PL: Can you point to specific edits which you think are vandalism? --Pasleim (talk) 17:27, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
@Pasleim: I have seen contribs of this user - some thousands of entries, every day, 95%+ not patrolled yet. I don't remember all details now, but merging an removing many existing items, undoing registered users editions, yours too, is not a usual practice, I think.
Could also someone be so nice to answer my earlier questions and - can I filter new editions list by language or selected group of them? --Jasc PL (talk) 21:06, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

31.200.20.7 ‎spammer

An anonymous user with the IP "31.200.20.x" or "31.200.10.x" has been spamming many talkpages with incessant requests to create an article on a subject he wishes. Could the admin here please protect my talk page from anonymous edits if he does not desist from his activities? Thank you Mimihitam (talk) 16:52, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

A lot of spam indeed. I blocked the whole 31.200.0.0/16 range for one week. Please report back if he continues after this block expires. Stryn (talk) 18:04, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
This looks harsh to me. I've noticed this user's acrivities as well and thought about asking him to reduce his requests, or best post them to one place (portal etc. on enwiki) instead of bothering dozens of users individually. However, there's no rule against asking users to write articles, and on the talk pages I checked I did not find a single response like "No, I won't and please don't ask again". --YMS (talk) 18:13, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
Well it doesn't make sense to try to warn the IP, if he is changing it so frequently. And from that range I didn't see much more than the same spamming. But feel free to remove/modify the block as you see is the best. Stryn (talk) 18:16, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

Request to protect Montesquieu (Q15975)

Hello, In the past, I obtained by IRC a 1-month semi-protection of Montesquieu (Q15975) which is repeatedly vandalized, probably because it is a frequently studied topic in high schools in France and elsewhere. Of course, this continues now. Would it be possible to have a year long or even permanent semi-protection for that page ? Louperivois (talk) 22:15, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

@Louperivois: I am hesitant to impose blocks for a year or more unless 'extended-confirmed protected' is desirable as a protection level on Wikidata. Semi-protected for three months. Mahir256 (talk) 22:31, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

In the last days I reverted many of the changes done by this user, when you look at the changes Special:Contributions/NOMO..STAR all, but the first one are reverted, not only by me, but by others too. How to handle this? Thanks – BTW: A German speaking admin will see those useless changes easier. --Wurgl (talk) 09:17, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Some of the edits I see are outright vandalism such as [1], and others are useless, so that I tend to think that the user is in need of a block. However, it would be great if somebody tried to talk to them in German at their talk page and understand what is going on - currently it is empty, they are not even aware of this topic.--Ymblanter (talk) 09:50, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Request to import template:Cite Q from ENWP

I am posting to request that someone with necessary userrights import a template from ENWP to Wikidata.

The template is en:Template:Cite Q. It generates a citation from any Wikidata item for a publication. @Pigsonthewing: established this template at ENWP. I asked that user about bringing it to Wikidata and they suggested that I ask here either for someone to perform the import or who might be able to assist me with an import, which I would do if it were possible and someone could direct me on how to get started.

My use for this is to develop documentation pages in Wikidata for Wikidata-specific projects which I think would be best to host here rather than on meta or elsewhere. Thanks for anyone who can respond to this. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:31, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

✓ Done; 1 month semi —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:37, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks MisterSynergy for the both. By the way let me ask one question - regarding all of admins and above: how long yet will be tolerated direct editions make by anonymous IP-users and registered a moment ago? I see that most part of that edits are amusement or vandalism. We all have much more important work to do like wasting time to still play with them --Jasc PL (talk) 13:18, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
We barely (or never?) use indefinite protection here, but in case of persistent vandalism cascading protection times up to a year or so are possible. The item about Clinton was never protected before, thus we start with 1 month this time.
The idea to protect heavily used items (maybe even automatically) comes up occasionally, and there may be good reasons to do so in some cases. However, right now there is no consensus to do so as anon contributions in general are quite useful. In practice this means that we test whether an item needs further protection after another one has ended, and wait for subsequent complaints here at WD:AN.
Anyway, highly used items are pretty well watched these days. Meanwhile the watchlist integration in Wikipedias has also improved a lot, thus hopefully more editors would activate that feature and react to Wikidata vandalism swiftly. This does not rule out to ask for community consensus regarding (auto) permanent protection for highly used items, though.
Thanks for your reports, btw! —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:29, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Btw. you find some indefinitely protected pages here: Special:ProtectedPages. We don’t have many of them. —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:32, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Many thanks for your answer MisterSynergy but I have in mind another problem: in my opinion - all editions make by anonymous and completely new users (as long as they made requested amount of properly editions in time-bound) should be placed in separate queue and exclusively by patrolling every of them they can be added to main database - simple, secure and preserving all proper editions solution.
Here is the next "one hour user": Contributions/West_point2207 tenaciously vandalizing David B. Samadi (Q2305367). How many same I find in the next 1 hour? --Jasc PL (talk) 14:17, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
@Jasc PL: please join Wikidata:WikiProject Counter-Vandalism - there are a number of tools listed that will help. I like the "ORC" tool applied to Recent Changes with a filter for unpatrolled changes. Whether we have a queue as you suggest or do it as we do now, there's the same effort involved in patrolling if we want to catch everything. ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:52, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Great @ArthurPSmith - page you mention looks very useful; I will need some time to check all functions, tools and read their manuals. Some time ago I ask some questions here about more efficient ways, but It looks like nobody was interested in more efficiently patrolling made by usual users. --Jasc PL (talk) 16:49, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

I am still not entirely sure what point you're trying to make. What action do you want taken? The copied speech has already been removed. I have no ability to change what goes on at the Thai edition wikipedia. The topic is notable, but copyright violations are not allowed here. Regarding bias, it is coming on strong from all sides. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 16:23, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Unintended PING-Spam

The last change of MediaWiki software had an unintended collateral damage: Instead of just pinging those, who are mentioned deliberately for that cause in an edit summary, it pings all, that are accidentally the last stable version editors of vandal reverts. Ther is already a Phab about that, and it's mentioned in a thread in the chat, but as a fast fix some admin could simply change the MediaWiki:Revertpage to the recommended version without linking the former editor to:

Reverted edits by $2 (talk) to last revision by $1

Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 15:58, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

The recommended version should be by $1 which I have already done. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 16:52, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
I've asked if this could be done before, quite a while ago. I don't think anyone was against the idea, it just seemed that nobody could be bothered to change the status quo. Now it seems necessary and I would welcome this change being done. I would do it myself, but don't want to "break" anything! (edit conflict) @Matěj Suchánek: I can't see the previous version in the history, but who says this is "recommended"? Jared Preston (talk) 16:58, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
My version will keep the link (status quo) as well prevent the ping-spam. I didn't remove the link because I just wanted to prevent the latter. I think nothing will break if you remove the link. The "previous" version was loaded from translatewiki. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 17:03, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
I just think it would look neater not linking to the username of the last non-vandal contributor, like on the English and German Wikipedias for example. Jared Preston (talk) 17:13, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

There are some sensible guidelines on meta:Bot policy#Edit throttle and peak hours. --bdijkstra (overleg) 19:52, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
That's one I'm aware of, but I don't think people would visit Meta to find the appropriate max speed. While our bot policy says "Bots should respect maxlag and should follow the API etiquette guidelines.", that may not be clear for QuickStatements or other tool users thinking they are not bound by "API Etiquette guideline".
Meanwhile QuickStatements (or Widar itself) should hard-limit the max speed unless they have botflag - it looks like the user in question here continued editing at unacceptable speed after I went to bed. — regards, Revi 05:29, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
Perhaps we should invite WMDE comment as well for the technical aspect. --Rschen7754 05:58, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
 • As far as I understand, it is not that simple to tell whether an edit rate is still acceptable or not. There are many potential bottlenecks on the server, and we do not have a single chart that tells us whether we need to slow someone down or not. Recently I met Lydia in the Wikidata IRC channel to talk about that.
 • Right now, User:Artix Kreiger 2 is again at 236 edits/min, on average over the past 6 hours [6]. They were blocked due to edit rate issues recently after Lydia complained about them.
 • From my experience, QuickStatements is the fastest tool available, and it edits at ~80 edits/min in single batch mode. In case of (significantly) higher edit rates, say 100+ edits/min, we can assume that editors started parallel batches, which is to be avoided. Would it be possible to add a “single batch policy for all tools” to our guidelines, or a limit of 100 edits/min that may not be exceeded for more than a couple of minutes?
MisterSynergy (talk) 06:11, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
Jaime Crespo (WMF DBA) said "the guidelines, as documented, is to not perform requests in parallel" (and "400 cannot be done without parallelization") @ operations channel-- so pararrel requests should be (maybe MUST) avoided as possible as they can. And API Etiquette says "mw:API:Etiquette#Request limit - If you make your requests in series rather than in parallel (i.e. wait for the one request to finish before sending a new request, such that you're never making more than one request at the same time), then you should definitely be fine." similar thing. — regards, Revi 08:08, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
And for acceptable edit rate - Meta global bot policy says "they should operate at an absolute minimum interval of 5 seconds (12 edits per minute)." Disclaimer: I don't think Wikidata is subscriber of global bot policy. — regards, Revi 08:11, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, the values given in the meta global bot policy seem to be inapplicable for Wikidata. The servers have proven to withstand much more edits per time interval than given there, and we typically do not have that many editors who run expensive batches at the same time. However, editors should not be allowed to consume the entire capacities (and beyond) of the infrastructure just by themselves, and this is the aspect we should make sure via policies.
Regarding API use and parallel requests: I don’t think that we can expect the average tool user to be aware of such considerations. Very likely they do not know that they use the API, many of them probably don’t even know what an API is. There are also many other (non-editing) tools that make parallel API requests, and nobody ever complained. I do for instance use the DiffLists.js script; each time I open my watchlist (or a contribution list or recent changes), it fires up to 500 API calls at once, and each of them finishes within 0.2 seconds. For a long time I wasn’t aware of that fact until I recently looked into the code after I became interested in some of the script’s functionality. Sure, API calls can create very different server load, but the lack of comprehensive metrics about “server load”—whatever that exactly means—makes it very complicated to deal with these issues. —MisterSynergy (talk) 08:51, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Link to Spanish page is incorrect

The links between the English Rate equation page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rate_equation) to the Spanish version of the page is incorrect. It links instead to the Spanish article for nuclear half-lives (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodo_de_semidesintegraci%C3%B3n_efectivo). I looked for the equivalent page in Spanish, and it doesn't seem to exist. The closest I could find was "Cinética química" (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cin%C3%A9tica_qu%C3%ADmica) which already links to the English "Chemical Kinetics" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_kinetics). But in any case I recommend deleting the links between the pages because they are clearly incorrect.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mochs (talk • contribs) at 13:45, March 26, 2018‎ (UTC).

MisstressD (Widar sitelink changes)

This user popped up on my Enwiki watchlist, as they were changing the site links from the proper articles to redirects (Strangely enough, each time the redirect was up for deletion as well) and disambiguation pages. They are also changing category items from linking to the appropriate category to linking to main/parent articles. I've reviewed all the enwiki changes in the last couple days but spotted changes to commons sitelinks as well, which I'm not as familiar with. Needs a deeper look, continued after leaving a talk message. If I'm wrong on how categories should be linked, please let me know. -- ferret (talk) 14:26, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

DePiep & unit of measurement

User:DePiep is edit-warring (1], [2], [3], [4]) at highly-used item unit of measurement (Q47574), to change its English label from "unit of measurement" to "unit of a physical quantity" and its description from "real scalar quantity, defined and adopted by convention, with which any other quantity of the same kind can be compared to express the ratio of the two quantities as a number (International vocabulary of metrology)" to "(International vocabulary of metrology.)"

I reverted, expanded the existing discussion at Wikidata:Project chat#‎How to add an item and advised them to cease edit warring and to demonstrate consensus for their edit, but they persist, and also made an abusive comment ([5]). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:45, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

(ec) Andy is a nasty editor who does not know anything about physical quantities. Andy used to troll me at enwiki, but now I happen to meet them here at WD. Anyway, I claim my edits are OK and Andy is trolling. - DePiep (talk) 22:55, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
Y'rhnor: I actually wrote to Andy: "A "unit" is not a "physical quantity".". -DePiep (talk) 23:01, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
Illustrating that Andy does not know thew issue: Andy recently proposed deletion of Q51102989. -DePiep (talk)
A previous version of the description of the item is supported by [9]. This source is given in a "described by source" property. It's a pity the system does not have a method to provide references for descriptions.
As for dimensionless unit (Q51102989) none of the properties have any references, nor does it link to any Wikipedia article in any language. I think that makes it worthy of deletion, and if other folks at Wikidata think references aren't important, I disagree. Jc3s5h (talk) 00:05, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
Or, Jc3s5h, add references & links. That is how Wikipedia works. There is a difference between "not an item" and "I don't understand this". btw, for 14 years already, this is the article: en:Dimensionless_unit. - DePiep (talk) 08:27, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
en:Dimensionless unit redirects to en:Dimensionless quantity (and has done since August 2006), which in turn is paired with dimensionless quantity (Q126818), not Q51102989. Perhaps the latter should be redirected to the former, here on Wikidata. You have now claimed in the deletion discussion that "The notion 'Non-notable' by Andy is meaningless.", which will come as news to all those familiar with WD:N. But this is not about Q51102989; it is about your abusive behaviour. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:26, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
re Pigsonthewing aka Andy. Here it started, with you going off-topic: [10] (note that everything in there is OT, and not constructive). After this, there was this 'trolling', non-communication, or 'hounding' as we call in in enwiki. I note that Andy did not contribute two words to the discussions, not even by editsummary.
re "non-notable", even linking to WD:N: is why I said Andy cannot judge about this. Andy missed WD:N points 2 and 3 (out of 3).
This is what I call 'trolling', or if that sounds offensive: 'serial unhelpful contributions, combined with hounding'.
I request to the admins to throw this complaint out without consequences (and without asking more editor's time). - DePiep (talk) 20:02, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Q47574 has been restored to its original configuration; Q51102989 has now been merged into a pre-existing item; an administrator has warned DePiep not to make further personal attacks nor ad hominem remarks. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:31, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
