WikiCite Roadmap[edit]

The Wikidata:WikiCite/Roadmap describes how the many items and properties from the WikiCite project cause some conflicts in Wikidata. Currently Wikidata is about 60 million items. WikiCite, if complete, would be 200 million items up to ~2018. This could be ea model for other conflicts and we should collect them here. Some collections which could start with 200 million items include the following:

  • identifiable people mentioned in published media
  • basic map data, including streets and buildings
  • companies
  • more like WikiCite, including books, magazine articles, etc
  • artworks, like from Sum of all Paintings / Museum of Babylon

Eventually I presume Wikidata will have one billion items. At that point we should probably plan for up to 10 billion. I have no idea how this will look. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:42, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

wikitech:WMDE/Wikidata/Scaling & wikitech:WMDE/Wikidata/Growth cover some of the easily predictable scaling issue currently for Wikidata, as well as predicting growth in some areas. I'm happy to put work into expanding this if anyone has questions regarding specific areas etc. I'm also happy to try and put some of the tech related things from there into this page using more words & explanation etc. ·addshore· talk to me! 20:32, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@addshore: The way this WikiProject is set up is that it just contains pointers to where more detailed information is available. So if you could help flesh out the page by adding pointers to relevant discussions, or even by adding or modifying the section structure, that would be most welcome. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 02:10, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Addshore: would be good if we could use some of the Wikimania hackathon to improve the documentation here. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 15:50, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I unfortunately was not at Wikimania this year! ·addshore· talk to me! 16:05, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Documenting the limits of Wikidata[edit]

Hi all, I just created Wikidata:Limitations as an attempt to document the limitations of Wikidata.

A friend of mine just made me aware of this project, ... so I am pinging you for feedback :)

I think in general it would make sense to document limitations of specific tools on subpages, e.g. Wikidata:Limitations/Query service. I already created such a page for the Wikidata user interface (Q109606431): Wikidata:Limitations/User interface.

--Push-f (talk) 15:54, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Push-f: I don't think these are for the most part relevant to this WikiProject; what you seem to be focused on with your "Limitations" pages is design and functionality, while this project is interested in growth projections and infrastructure capacity. Also, it is somewhat disruptive for individual users to create their own pages under the Wikidata: namespace; these pages can be confusing for new or inexperienced users who may not understand they are not general policy or guideline pages. It would probably be preferable for you to draft such things in your own User: space and then seek community approval to make something a policy or guideline or whatever it should be with an RFC. ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:38, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah okay, thanks. I think it would make sense to update the intro of the WikiProject page to explain which limitations this project is focusing on.
The page is very much not intended to become a policy or a guideline, so I don't think the RFC process would make sense.
While policies are clearly marked with {{Policy}} I can see how other articles in the Wikidata: namespace could be confused for policy. I don't really want to add {{Draft}} since it suggests that the content may be unreliable, which I don't think is the case. I think I'll create a {{NotPolicy}} template that simply states that the page is not a policy. --Push-f (talk) 17:03, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Push-f: I would rather suggest you transform it in a sandbox page, or a series of sandboxes, instead of keeping it in the WD namespace, since it's not a community-sanctioned page, but your take on the project, and the two things should not be mixed up. Thanks in advance. --Sannita - not just another it.wiki sysop 18:35, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean a Wikidata:Sandbox subpage? I don't see the point of that, I'd rather just move the page to my user namespace. I disagree with the page being "my take on the project", the content of the page is entirely factual ... it's not an essay or an opinion piece. If you still want to move the page please do so (along with the talk page and subpages to User:Push-f/Wikidata:Limitations) ... I cannot do so myself without leaving a redirect behind. --Push-f (talk) 20:57, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
ChristianKl kindly moved my page to my user namespace: User:Push-f/Wikidata:Limitations. You're still very much welcome to give feedback. --Push-f (talk) 03:26, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Big thanks for compiling these limitations. So9q (talk) 12:52, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
