BBLD - ID removal and crosswiki external link removal

There is BBLD_ID_Property_properties. It cannot be solved via chat, since Jura1 terrorises users of P2580 for almost a year. [1]

P2580 is used for external links in several Wikipedias, and the topic "how to proceed" with the IDs is discussed and in June a user posting explicit support for moving forward and follow the proposal of Magnus [2], but Jura1 just added

and this caused a bot run which broke hundreds of these links in dewiki, ruwiki, lvwiki, frwiki

Several years of work connecting WD and BBLD - gone.

@GerardM, Arachn0: I don't know any other user apart from you that could help here.

It is the sole choice of BBLD when to deprecate an ID. VIAF also depricates IDs. And it is the choice of BBLD what format the ID has, only that it is based on ISNI for some, does not mean it is equivalent to the current canonical ISNI nor any current ISNI for a person, since

  • ISNI assignments sometimes change [e.g. wrong person B mixed in person A, then later person A split out - this is rare, but did happen with some German king].
  • the ISNI based BBLD IDs are not guaranteed to be correct at all

GBIF now using Wikidata

Hi @Pigsonthewing: You may have already noticed, but GBIF is using Wikidata to source some links to other botanical sites. See, e.g. GBIF:Acacia burkittii, where right at the very bottom you see the wikidata data links we asked for and which were populated on Wikidata via mix n match... (This user is very pleased). I'd have pinged the whole taxonomy group but didn't know how..... (Hoping you might do it for me.) MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:10, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── That's great news (which I hadn't seen). Thank you for letting me know. I'll spread the word accordingly, not least in:

WikiProject Taxonomy has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.

Articles and authors

Dear Andy, Mary Violette Seeman (Q65932963) has authored many papers/books etc, quite a number of which have Q items. e.g., (Q39263392). This all looks very useful, but I am struggling to find a use for it (either as a SPARQL query) or within a wikipedia article. I was hoping you might speak to how the information about articles is envisaged to be used and give an example (or point me to something illustrating the use...) Thanks, as always. Bulk Loading of Entity URI with Mix'n'match

Hi Andy, This is in reference to my earlier query in the project chat (Wikidata:Project chat#Bulk Loading of Entity URI). I'm encountering some technical errors when I tried to upload our sample data to Mix'n'match for matching with Wikidata (see NLB Name Authorities https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/#/catalog/2758). The values are not displaying properly, the URIs to our name authority page are not generated correctly in the Excel list and fail to match with Wikidata items. Attached are screenshots of the errors and the text file that is uploaded. Can you help us take a look what is causing the errors? How can we re-upload the file? Thank you. (̴Nlbkos (talk) 03:01, 5 September 2019 (UTC))

@Nlbkos: I've sent you an email, so you have my email address. Can you email me a section of your text file (say, the first 40 lines)? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:30, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging

The development team is starting work on one of the last planned features for SDC v1.0, a lightweight tool to suggest depicts tags for images. I've published a project page for it, please have a look. I plan to share this page with everyone on Commons much more broadly in the coming days. The tool has been carefully designed to try to not increase any workload on Commons volunteers; for starters, it will be opt-in for auto-confirmed users only and will not generate any sort of backlog here on Commons. Additionally, the tool is highly privacy-minded for the contributors and publicly-minded for the third party being used, in this case Google. The implementation and usage notes contain more information about these and other potential concerns as a starting place. It's really important that the tool is implemented properly from the start, so feedback is welcome. Questions, comments, concerns are welcome on the talk page and I will get answers as quickly as possible as things come up. On the talk page you can also sign up to make sure you're a part of the feedback for designs and prototype testing. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 17:57, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - blogs posted in Wikimedia Space

There are two separate blog entries for Structured Data on Commons posted to Wikimedia Space that are of interest:

  • Working with Structured Data on Commons: A Status Report, by Lucas Werkmeister, discusses some ways that editors can work with structured data. Topics include tools that have been written or modified for structured data, in addition to future plans for tools and querying services.
  • Structured Data on Commons - A Blog Series, written by me, is a five-part posting that covers the basics of the software and features that were built to make structured data happen. The series is meant to be friendly to those who may have some knowledge of Commons, but may not know much about the structured data project.
I hope these are informative and useful, comments and questions are welcome. All the blogs offer a comment feature, and you can log in with your Wikimedia account using oAuth. I look forward to seeing some posts over there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:33, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging designs

I've published a design consultation for the computer-aided tagging tool. Please look over the page and participate on the talk page. If you haven't read over the project page, it might be helpful to do so first. The tool will hopefully be ready by the end of this month (October 2019), so timely feedback is important. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Edvard Munch correspondance

Good evening! I came across a webpage from the Edvard Munch museum listing all persons who have had letter correspondance with Edvard Munch (Q41406) and where the letters are filed, translated and published on the web by the Munch Museum (Q844926) https://www.emunch.no/english.xhtml. I have now made a draft for a proposal of an external ID. But before starting the prosess, are you able to have a look at the proposal? Do yuo think it will be to detailed for Wikidata? Breg Pmt (talk) 22:14, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

Asking for a letter of support to create a research unit in Tunisia

Dear Sir,

I thank you for your efforts. We are managing to create a research unit called "Data Engineering and Semantics" in the University of Sfax, Tunisia. The purpose of this research unit is to gather Wikiresearchers from University of Sfax into a recognized research structure and have funding from Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education. In order to do that, we need to have a letter of support from institutions all over the world. I ask if you or the director of your research department can write a letter of support for us so that we can have our application approved. This will be acknowledged. --Csisc (talk) 14:27, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

WikiCite data quality

Hi Andy,

The slides I presented this afternoon are now on Commons: WikidataCon 2019 - WikiCite panel - Data Quality.pdf.

A couple of particularly relevant queries are items with a DOI (via Linked Data Fragments): https://query.wikidata.org/bigdata/ldf?subject=&predicate=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wikidata.org%2Fprop%2Fdirect%2FP356&object= and count of items with only P31:Q5 and P496 statements: https://w.wiki/AYu.

I suspect it will be obvious that the wikibase:statements predicate is key to limiting the results to items with only two statements but I'll be in the Alte Pumpe later if you want to discuss.

Hi Andy,

I've added some more information to the article that I started adding during the workshop this morning. I've followed another article as a template, so I'd really like for you to have a look to see if what I have done is correct.

Should I have added anything else? I've not put a full publication date as I am not sure what it is, but I've added other metadata. Should the keywords have been added on the initial creation page (with the four text boxes)? I have added keywords as the 'main subject'.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Wikicommons and Wikidata

Hi. I saw your tweet today and although I have done a bit of Wikishootme during the lockdown here, and then adding some of those Commons images to Wikidata, I wasn't sure what to do with these images of a WWII anti-aircraft predictor - an early analogue computer. Maybe we could collaborate on a Wikidata item or add them to articles? I saw it on an old and abandoned quarantine station in Wellington harbour. (See here for a little context.)

Quilt Phase (talk) 08:17, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

@Quilt Phase: Thank you. The corresponding article is en:Director (military) (note also the equivalent in four other languages). You can add one of your images there; and to the Wikidata item: director (Q1047422) Do you need help? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:24, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: Thank you! Have added to the en:Director (military) article and the Wikidata article. The Wikipedia article is USA-focused but the anti-aircraft section there handily refers to the fact the term "predictor" is used in other armies, so it seemed a good place. Feel free to check my workings. Quilt Phase (talk) 03:15, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

The prototype uses categories, structured data as well as wikitext from Commons, and Wikidata to find its results. The development team would like your feedback on the prototype, as they are looking to work to further enhance the search experience on Commons. If you have a moment, please look over the project page set up on Commons to find a link to the prototype and leave your feedback on the talk page. "Arolsen ID" (P7656)

Hi Andy,

please have a look here https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/help/. There it is stated "Each document in the Arolsen Archives has a unique identification number, known as the Doc-ID. When you open the document, you will find the number at the bottom right. Please quote this number if you have any questions about a specific document." The URL does not have the same systematic for all kinds of documents. Conflict of interest: I'm working at the archive.

I am new to Wikidata community so I don't know how to add the information in the correct way. That's why I'm writing to you. I hope this is okay.

Regards Rhinegirl  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rhinegirl (talk • contribs) at 14:01, 19 June 2020‎ (UTC).

@Rhinegirl: Arolsen ID (P7656) is for an "identifier for an Holocaust victim on the Arolsen Archives' website", not for individual documents (for that reason, I have reverted your change to the property description). For example, https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/search/people/78006302 Please let me know if you need further help, and if so give a specific example of what you're trying to do. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:50, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Andy, the URL syntax you created works only for some records. For example it works not for lists (https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/archive/1-1-6-1_8054500/?p=1&doc_id=9892089) or records without indexed names (https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/archive/1-1-6-7/?p=1&doc_id=10641647). The syntax contains the number of the collection f.ex. 1.1.6.1, if available the signature of a subpart f.ex. 8054500 and the last part is always the DocID.

At Arolsen Archives there is no such thing as a "victim's ID". Therefore the property's description "identifier for an Holocaust victim" is wrong. A victim can appear on more than one document and every time the ID will be different. As the cited webpage says the ID refers to the document. Additional you can have a look at video 4 of this tutorial serie here: https://arolsen-archives.org/en/search-explore/services-researchers/ousarchiv-video-tutorial/ Specially the sequence 3:13-3:27.

@Rhinegirl: This is the intended behaviour; the two URLs you give are - as you say - each identifying a document, not a person. In the URL in my example, the number "78006302" is (at least for our purposes) identifying the person described at https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/search/people/78006302 It's just a short-hand way of saying "the URL for the page about this person is "https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/search/people/" followed by "78006302". « the language does not reside here »

Hi,

I'm sorry but what the hell are you talking about? What is wrong with this statements and with the references?

Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 15:23, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Please demonstrate consensus that we should tell the world that the German language is located at 52°0'0.000"N, 10°0'0.000"E (or indeed at any such point); and do not restore that claim again until you do. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:35, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
I'm sorry but I'm totally lost. Wikidata claims does not need consensus; in the contrary, Wikidata is made to store also dissensus. And this claim has a reference. If you have a better coordinates, feel free to add it but I really don't see why you want to remove this one… Could you give some explanation to enlighten me? Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 16:40, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Wikidata operates by consensus, just like very other Wikimedia project. Languages do not have locations. And German is used in the Arctic and Antarctica, and on all continents between them. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:59, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
« Languages do not have locations. » wait what? Of course they have, that's exactly what the source says and most items about languages have location, right now 6405 items about languages (or subclass of) have coordinates : https://w.wiki/VuT
Did I miss a discussion saying that Wikidata shouldn't store the location of languages? I genuinely felt obvious to me that language have location, I didn't even imagine this could be a problem (I thought you wanted other coordinates…).
PS: yes all languages may be used everywhere on the planet but there is almost always a trivial and obvious choice which can backed by references.
Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 17:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

I have been in that database before. Would it not be a good idea to create a property for this in Wikidata? I really don't know how it works, but you've done that before with Property:P3827. So perhaps you can help with that? Greetings from the Netherlands, --Dick Bos (talk) 11:36, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

@Dick Bos: Hello from Birmingham! I'd be happy to propose a property, or properties. The searches at:

for example, show that the database is widely referred to by Wikimedians.

However, I'm not sure how to model this. The database also includes:

and it may be best to have a property for each type; or just one. Do you have a view on that? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:52, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I know, I created it. But you don't explain your change. A value can sit alongside its external-id equivalent. It is an insurance and I put it as a constraint in this perspective. Your modification does not seem to have any motivation. Proof by the absurd, if there is enough external identifier gathering the values, the Items will not be "stripped" of predicate, no? —Eihel (talk) 20:26, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Commons - Media Sarch, new feedback round

Greetings,

I'm following up on a message from earlier in the year about the prototype development for Special:MediaSearch. Based on community feedback, the Structured Data team has developed some new features for Special:MediaSearch and are seeking another round of comments and discussions about the tool. Commons:Structured_data/Media_search is updated with details about the new features plus some other development information, and feedback is welcome on Commons talk:Structured_data/Media_search. Media Search works in any language, so the team would especially appreciate input around support for languages other than English. I look forward to reading about what you think. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

@User:Keegan (WMF): Three copies? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 07:51, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
There's a bug in MassMessage/Job queue that causes this to happen and it seems to be random when and where the message duplicates. Engineers have been trying to fix it for five years, but this is the first time I've ever seen three copies delivered. I'll mention it in the task as the cause is still actively being investigated. At some point would you have time to make a catalog for Al-Jazeera topic ID (P7301) and The Independent topic ID (P7284)? Thanks! --Trade (talk) 11:32, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

May i ask how you found the BBC News data? They have an API? --Trade (talk) 12:12, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Also, which item should Voice-activated technology and Universities in the UK be matched to? --Trade (talk) 12:25, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
@Trade: On en.Wikipedia, en:Voice activation redirects to en:Voice user interface, so voice user interface (Q2350070); for the latter universities in the United Kingdom (Q918342). I manually scraped the BBC links (which is not a sustainable method!), but there are many more still to find. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:19, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Incorrect dates for republished articles

Hi Andy, I have been doing a bit of author disambiguation on some naturalists and am somewhat distressed that the republished articles from Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London are dated in wikidata with the date of republication and not the date of publication, (as well as pointing to them via DOIs to a paywalled article). You can see the problem in William John Dakin for whom I inserted a scholia template. Three of his articles (all associated with Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London have incorrect dates (and this also happened for Arthur Dendy, but I have corrected the dates for his articles.) Would it be possible to fix this mess in one go? or is it up to us human ants to fix items one at a time? Cheers, MargaretRDonald (talk) 22:12, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

AAGM proposed IDs

Hi Andy. Anything I can do to help move these two proposals on, please?

I want to go back to the galleries and let them know we can start to finalised the upload of the data using the new identifiers.

Identifier

Hi Pigsonthewing, For Siu Yam-yam in Identifiers section, I entered HKMDB person ID and its id.

In reference, I entered official website and http://www.hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=4122

Is that ok?

cite Q is giving an in appropriate link for the journal Lichenologist

Hi @pigsonthewing:. In Gintaras Kantvilas I have used the {{cite Q}} template extensively. As you can see

  1. there is no enwiki article for the journal Lichenologist, and
  2. {{Cite Q|Q55891827}} produces P.M. McCarthy; G. Kantvilas; J. A. Elix (July 2001). "Amphorothecium, a new pyrenocarpous lichen genus from New South Wales, Australia". The Lichenologist. 33 (04): 291–296. doi:10.1006/LICH.2001.0330. ISSN 0024-2829. Wikidata Q55891827.View profile on Scholia with an inappropriate link for lichenologist in enwiki. Hoping that this issue can be fixed. (Thanks for cite Q. I love it) MargaretRDonald (talk) 03:08, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
@MargaretRDonald: That's very odd! We have a coding sprint to improve the template tomorrow; we'll take a look at it then. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:32, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Andy. MargaretRDonald (talk) 19:18, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
@MargaretRDonald: We determined that the cause isn't in {{Cite Q}}'s code, but another Lua module that it calls. We plan to update that, but a work-around in the meantime was to change the English label for Q55891827 from "Lichenologist" to "The Lichenologist". Please let me know if you find any other cases like this, or other issues. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:50, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

parameter? for cite Q

Hi Andy. Having uploaded the larger part of the journal Muelleria, I have been replacing references to Muelleria journal articles with cite Q refs. However, I note that a number of editors, not trusting the permanence of the Muelleria's pdf links, put in the parameter: accessdate=. These I have been reluctant to touch since while I think Muelleria intends them to be permanent links, who knows? Therefore just wondering if you might add the possibility of an "accessdate=" parameter to cite Q. MargaretRDonald (talk) 06:07, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

@MargaretRDonald: You can use any of the parameters that are in en:Template:Citation (for which {{Cite Q}} is a wrapper). Note that the parameter name you want is hyphenated, as |access-date. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:41, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Andy. (Little to stop me now) MargaretRDonald (talk) 11:51, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

cite Q and italics in an article name

Hi Andy. Could I draw your attention to the discussion at User:MargaretRDonald Apology where a colleague will not be using cite Q because {{cite Q|Q102425855}} produces N. Walsh (2013). "Maireana obrienii (Chenopodiaceae), a new species from eastern Australia" (PDF). Muelleria. 31: 61–64. doi:10.5962/P.295678. ISSN 0077-1813. Wikidata Q102425855.View profile on Scholia with the title not correctly italicised as in: Maireana obrienii (Chenopodiaceae), a new species from eastern Australia]. I can imagine italicising with e.g.<i>, but to do something like that would mean that searching for article titles in wikidata would be a nightmare. I am enjoying using cite Q as it has the capacity to link authors of scholarly articles who are cited in an article to be linked to the author, with all the hard work happening just once in wikidata. Anyway I am tossing the discussion in your direction because you and your work group may be able to think of some brilliant way to overcome the problem.... AAGM People ID revisited

Hi Andy.

Despite assurances given when creating https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/aagm_people_ID it turns out that their "people' ID is used commonly for companies. This obviously causes problems when adding AAGM People ID (P8783) to Wikidata Companies - which will be 100s.

Examples:

What is the 'correct' approach to resolution? eg

  • Loosening or amending the validation rules on P8783?
  • Creating a 'copy' "AAGM Company ID" with different validation rules
  • something else?

And what process should we follow?

Thanks Watty62 (talk) 15:23, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

@Watty62: Your first suggestion; and rewrite the description; now done. We have plenty of similar IDs that are for "people or organisations"; for example British Museum person or institution ID (P1711). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:22, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
That's brilliant, Andy. Thanks for the speedy turnaround. I'd envisaged a lengthy resolution! Many thanks!

IETF language tag for scientific names

@Wostr: I regret to say that no, nothing has changed. Lack of support in the IETF language community led me to decide that my efforts were better expended on other things. Please help - Q86431843

Hi, please try to help me. I can not find the solution. The merger between the two pages has taken over my Google page. ‏I talk with google and they tell me to ask you to remove or change the page because the page is the source of the panel. ‏And the two pages merged. ‏ I'm not asking you to create a new page for me. Just please delete the old page and move to a new page. So that I can develop a clean start. Because the source of the information has changed. ‏Please just try to understand me. ‏All my work and my data merged with the biologist. ‏So please remove the page and create a new one for him. ‏I don’t want a page for me. ‏Just new start.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.143.157.158 (talk • contribs) at 12:51, 9 September 2021‎ (UTC).

The item will not be deleted. Without further information it is not possible to help you. We would need to know:
  • Your name
  • You identifiers (ORCID, etc), if any
  • What information in the item is about you, and not the original subject
  • What items link to this item, that are actually about you or your work
Of course you don't have to reveal your identity here, but as I say, we cannot help you if you do not do so. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:08, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

The page is create on my details here the first history: https://i.ibb.co/BrHNGnM/Screen-Shot-2021-09-23-at-22-52-43.png

And after all the merges the page got other details and make a massive mass with all my work. My google panel change to the biologist and I was need to create a new one. You can see I’m the owner: https://i.ibb.co/CJZ9b96/Screen-Shot-2021-09-23-at-22-58-38.png

I just want to delete this page “Q86431843” Because google says the source of the panel need to be deleted, so I can change back the panel. You can make new page with all the biologist data. But please remove the “Q86431843” and fix all the mass.

176.228.140.189 22:44, 27 September 2021 (UTC)hey, thanks for your answer. I will explain. This page originally opened with my information. You can see in the pictures I added. here the first history: https://i.ibb.co/BrHNGnM/Screen-Shot-2021-09-23-at-22-52-43.png Following this page, my Google panel opens. After merging ,the page received the biologist's information and deleted mine. So all my information is gone and remains only of the biologist. But this page serves as a source of information for my panel. Instead of deleting my page and creating a new page for the biologist. Merge the two pages into my page. And actually passed all his information into my panel. You may be claiming that I'm not suitable for the site and that's fine. But delete the old page and create a new biologist page because you overwrote all my information on a page related to me. If I make a new page with all the same data from "Q86431843" you can delete the page, so i can get my panel back? and its fix all the problems? I make page exactly the same. thank you.
