Motivation[edit]

My initial motivation was the infoboxes for sporting events in the Hebrew Wikipedia. They have a field similar to "Current Champion" in w:en:Template:Infobox football tournament. The infobox in general can be used for various kinds of events, but "Current Champion" could be named differently in different events, according to gender of "champion", "winning person", "winning team", etc. I also noticed that the Catalan Wikipedia, which uses Wikidata-driven infoboxes a lot, doesn't have such a field, and I suspect that the lack of such a property is at least part of the reason for this, but User:Amadalvarez can correct me if I'm wrong :)

More broadly, this can be used to define who the award is for, which sounds like relevant information that could be used for many things.

Somewhat similar properties:

  • category for recipients of this award (P2517): This one doesn't fit the need perfectly for two reasons:
    1. It's too Wikipedia-centric, and it would be better to have something more generic.
    2. It's for those who actually won the award and not for those who are eligible to win it or compete for it.
  • participant (P710): This one is for those who actually took part in something, even without winning, whereas I am looking for a property for someone who could take part.

 Support - Seems useful. I'm just thinking if there is some other way of wording this so it could be used more broadly, for things that are not awards, but do have eligibility criteria. Maybe something like 'eligible recipient for this object'. Husky (talk) 21:04, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment This proposal has some interest, but I'm not entirely convinced by the way things are combined, e.g.
  • in other properties, we differentiate between "competitions" and "awards". Naming this "eligible award recipient" and applying it to sports would blur that.
  • For sports competitions, we have some properties to define who can compete (e.g. competition class, minimum age), but maybe not everything is covered.
  • For many awards, I think main subject (P921) can do. If it's for a work in mathematics, it doesn't really matter if the recipient is a mathematician or generally seen as a physicist by mathematicians: eligible may be any human with meeting some other criteria (P27?)
  • The Academy Awards (Q19020) sample given above has another problem: it's for a class of film awards, not an individual award
  • maybe we should differentiate by hard participation criteria (e.g. as does right to vote (P2964) or age of candidacy (P2998), competition class (P2094)), qualities people involved generally have (e.g. has does sport (P641) or members have occupation (P3989) ), and the objective ("best film", "most points in competition", etc.)
