Top 10 primary sources tool users

[edit]

Hola @Escudero,

The primary sources tool status page says that you are one of the top 10 most active user of the tool, congratulations! If you have not tried it yet, I would like to invite you to activate and play with the FBK-strephit-soccer dataset: it is a small demo dataset to support the StrepHit IEG proposal. I would really appreciate if you could endorse, join (blue buttons), or comment the idea on the proposal page.

Looking forward to your feedback.
Cheers,

Deaths

[edit]

Hi, thanks for updating deaths in Wikidata. However, I have one request – when you do it, don't add the "imported from" as source, but rather the source given in Wikipedia, like this. For recent deaths there will almost always be a reference in Wikipedia, so using that here in Wikidata is much better than using the "imported from" statement. Iron Man

[edit]

Hi Escudero,

I had a look at the item you nominated. Personally, I think each cast member should have a qualifier for the character role. I'm not sure about the languages of the film listed. I think it's just English.
--- Jura 11:10, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jura1: Hi. I put a qualifier on those cast members whose character is prominent (in other words, with a Wikidata item). Should I create new items for all characters? Also for really minor characters (village boy, Cop #1...)?
I had been wondering about that too, but from Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/24#character_.28or_character_role_name.29 it appears that an item should be made for each one. At Q15624215, I mostly did that.
--- Jura 12:56, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you about languages, but in IMDb are listed all those languages and I thought that maybe can be useful in the future (for example, a query with all american movies that use Esperanto), so I searched some references. Should I delete them? --Escudero (talk) 11:45, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jura1:Done! Something else? --Escudero (talk) 17:58, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and promoted it. There is one uncredited appearance left which doesn't have a reference.
--- Jura 07:30, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jura1: Fixed. Thank you so much! --Escudero (talk) 16:12, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cast member / voice actor

[edit]

Hi Escudero. I think voice actor (P725) is more appropriate than cast member (P161) for Cars 3 (Q21079862). --Jobu0101 (talk) 19:57, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On the usage of P1476 and P1657

[edit]

Hey, if you read the description and the talk page of title (P1476), you can see that this property is only for the original language title of works. Please, do not add Spanish titles where the original title of the work/edition the item is about is not Spanish. As for MPA film rating (P1657), you may want to add the certificate # with rating certificate ID (P2676) right away (available at http://filmratings.com/), otherwise it'll have to be added later by another editor. – Máté (talk) 06:27, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Máté: Thanks, I'll add them in the right place (items of the Spanish dubbed versions). --Escudero (talk) 08:50, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Stop removing imported from

[edit]

Edits like [3] are not cool Escudero. If data gets imported from Wikipedia it is referenced with imported from Wikimedia project (P143). This is completely normal practice and done with millions of statements. As you can read on Help:Sources#Different_types_of_sources, you can replace it with a better source. Just removing the source of the data is not acceptable behaviour. Please don't do that ever again. Multichill (talk) 15:11, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Multichill:Sorry. It will not happen again. --Escudero (talk) 15:15, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your quick reply.
Made me wonder, does "importado de" have some sort of slightly different meaning in Spanish than the "imported from" in English? You're certainly not the first Spanish speaker assuming a different meaning for this property. Maybe the label or description could be improved in Spanish?
I'm working on adding the missing air dates, IMDB id's etc to television series episode (Q21191270). Once we have more IMDb ID (P345), we should be able to update these references to links to IMDB. Take for example South Park, I could probably already do it there. Do you know of any existing tools for that? Multichill (talk) 15:23, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Multichill: This is not my case, I edit Wikidata in Engish. I'm deepening in reliable sourcing and I've been too impulsive. I forgot that aspect of "imported from". Speaking about references, do you think IMDb is a good reliable source or a temporary one? There are thousands of IMDb references, and when I find a better reference (news article, official press release...), I usually replace IMDb, but I don't know if it's a good edit. About your question, I don't know any tool. I usually write a query and edit by hand with QuickStatements. --Escudero (talk) 15:40, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I generally only replace imported from Wikimedia project (P143). In all other cases I just add another source. In your case I would also just add another source in addition to IMDB. Multichill (talk) 15:44, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Film poster 3383

[edit]

Hi Escudero. I noticed you added links to items about posters as qualifiers. I wonder if we should use "no value" or "somevalue" when there is currently no image at Commons. Personally, I'd use "somevalue". Supposedly, at some point in the distant future there could be one at Commons. I think somevalue is also easier to select with ?item wdt:P3383 ?value.
--- Jura 15:19, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jura1: Yes, I agree. How I add "somevalue"? It's "unknown value"? --Escudero (talk) 19:23, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, same thing. Just as hard to set as "novalue" ;)

Personajes del Universo cinematográfico de Marvel

[edit]

Escudero (talk) 11:30, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

GTAA on Wikidata

[edit]

You receive this message because you previously matched persons from the GTAA (the Thesaurus for Audiovisual Archives) with items on Wikidata. We would like to inform you about some improvements that we have made to that catalogue on Mix’n’Match. We have improved the automatic links and added additional information from our catalogue (what we’ve called ‘extracted terms’) to the terms. We hope that this makes matching the thesaurus with Wikidata that much more fun and easier. Read more about this project here or in Dutch WikiProject Dutch Media History nl here. IPA in Lexemes

[edit]

Hi! I've corrected cebra (L5452) and nutria (L16088) after your edits. The problem is that IPA does not belong to lexeme but to forms, because every form has different pronunciation. If you specified it this way in other lexemes then they need corrections as well. Also please note that there are two types of IPA: with "//" and "[]". You deleted them but they are important. Prado

[edit]

Hi Escudero, happy to see you adding some of the missing Prado paintings! Not sure if you found Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Collection/Museo del Prado already, but that gives a nice overview. When I first added the Prado they seem to have about 2000 paintings online (based on Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Location/Spain) and now it's already more than 2700? Good! I already noticed based on Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/RKD to match/Prado that they should have more than 2000 paintings in their collection. What I also noticed some time ago that they changed their inventory numbers by adding an additional digit. So it used to be P02181 and it's now P002181. Quite annoying... We should probably normalize it because otherwise we end up with a ton of duplicate items. I see two options:

  1. We change everything to the new 6 digit format
  2. We change every item to include both the 5 and the 6 digit format

I think the first option is the best one. What do you think?

Could you also add the English labels to the paintings? The linked English version also contains JSON-LD from which you can extract the English title. We usually don't use title (P1476) for paintings because titles of paintings are not published, but later given to a work. It's quite rare that we know what name a painter gave to a work and to actually have a source for that. Probably best to just remove it. Multichill (talk) 15:58, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Multichill: Hi, Multichill:
  • Prado contains about 8000 paintings! I don't know how many of them are online, but I've already search and create every painting for the first 400 IDs and only ~10 are missing, I don't know why.
  • Yes, I'm using Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Collection/Museo del Prado to check what paintings are left.
  • I also think the best option is change everything to the new format. I'm already changing them.
  • Ok, I'll remove the title for the paintings.
  • Not every paint has a web in English and Spanish, so in advance I'll check and add when both exist.
Escudero (talk) 17:14, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I've been to the Prado several times so I was already wondering why I found so few paintings in their online collection. I checked and the Spanish version returns 6460 paintings and the English version only 2787 paintings. That seems to explains it.
The Prado page is already too large and will only get larger. I'll split it up like the Rijksmuseum (both by inventory number as by period).
The code I used to do the initial import is at https://github.com/multichill/toollabs/blob/master/bot/wikidata/prado_import.py . You might find something useful in there.
I think some of the missing paintings went to other collections. We'll figure it out. Great to see you working on this! Multichill (talk) 17:37, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I split up Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Collection/Museo del Prado. This list should be empty when you're done fixing the inventory numbers. Multichill (talk) 23:09, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for fixing all the inventory numbers!
Do you also include location (P276) -> Museo del Prado (Q160112) in your import? I noticed a couple of paintings without it. If not, could you please include it?
Some time ago I noticed the Prado also includes a wealth of other catalogues in their metadata. Would be a nice improvement to also add these in the future. See for example this painting, it contains a reference to two catalogues. We would need to create items for these and add to The Delousing (Q52606508) the different catalog code (P528) qualified with catalog (P972) containing the newly created catalogue items. Multichill (talk) 14:21, 9 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Multichill: Thank you! Yes, I'm also including location (P276). I'm improving my script to consider your last input. Escudero (talk) 09:26, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Multichill: What do you think about Portrait of a Gentleman (Q59674335)? Do you miss something? Escudero (talk) 07:05, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That looks awesome. Great work. Just two minor points: I wouldn't include the "Núm. " part in the catalog code. I don't think that's actually part of the catalog code, just Spanish way of saying "number". I would make two lines for "405" (one for the 1910 one and another for the 1972 one).
Really looking forward to see these catalogs fill up :-) Multichill (talk) 22:05, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Multichill: ✓ Fixed numbers. And about the two lines, I can't do that with the current import script, but I can fix them after import. Should I do it? Escudero (talk) 10:50, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That would a nice improvement after import yes. Multichill (talk) 10:50, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see you're progressing well! Happy to see that. I noticed Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Collection/Museo del Prado/Inventory number incorrect has grown quite a bit. I wouldn't do the "Inventario actualizado" id's as inventory number (P217), but just as a separate catalog which we can sort out later. Multichill (talk) 18:01, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Multichill: ✓ Inventario actualizado, created and moved to Inventario actualizado (Q60047668). I've finished all paintings from the web and now I'm adding catalogs to old painting items. Escudero (talk) 10:26, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image suggestions for Prado paintings

[edit]

Hi Escudero, hope you're doing well. The logic behind Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Image suggestions/Creator, institution and inventory number match got fixed so now it contains a lot of new suggestions of images to add. Quite a few Prado paintings and I expect more of them to show up soom. Want to help to get these items illustrated? Multichill (talk) 11:49, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Multichill:Great! Doing :) Escudero (talk) 16:15, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you do check the suggestions before adding them. Unfortunately the list does include errors. If it would be error free I would just have a robot add it.
I normalized the inventory numbers for 600+ images of paintings in the Prado that aren't linked to a Wikidata item yet. That made the number of suggestions spike to 1400 and a new batch just came in.
https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=8290381 gives an overview of files in Commons:Category:Paintings in the Museo del Prado that haven't been linked to a Wikidata item yet. Currently that's about 2100 files. I put a copy in my Commons sandbox. Let's see how this list will shrink. Will also be a good way to see if we missed any paintings.
Thanks for helping! Multichill (talk) 16:54, 16 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Inception and title for Prado paintings

[edit]

Hi Escudero, I hope you're doing well!

  • Following this discussion I added a lot of title (P1476) statements. Can you add them too to the Prado paintings? I think you can add both Spanish and English for a lot of them
  • I updated by logic to handle imprecise inception (P571). To handle two cases: Circa <some year> and somewhere between <earliest year> and <latest year>. What kind of dates are you able to handle right now? I noticed you're using quickstatements to import the data, but what are you using to prepare the data? You can find my date handling logic here

I hope you can help here to get Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Property statistics a bit more greener! If you need any help, just let me know. If the dates are giving you a hard time, I might be able to run my bot for the Prado just for the dates. Multichill (talk) 16:11, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
