سالگرہ کے پیغامات

ویکی ڈیٹا ڈیولپمنٹ ٹیم کا پیغام

Happy 10th birthday, Wikidata!

It’s now been a decade since the first edit on Wikidata. That feels like a long time and at the same time it flew by in the blink of an eye.

This year Wikidata has grown to 100 Million Items. That is 100 Million Items containing data about the world. 100 Million Items that help us learn something new about the world. In addition, we now have over 700,000 Lexemes – data about words – to help us not just understand the world through data but also to give us the basis for talking about it. However, the much more important number is 12,300: the number of people who collect and maintain that data, advocate for open data in institutions, help others contribute to Wikidata in workshops, build tools, make use of the data to build applications, and so much more. Thank you! <3

Some highlights of the past year:

  • Lexicographical data: This part of Wikidata is growing and the quantity and quality of the data is reaching the point where great applications are now possible. Check out Scribe for example.
  • Reuse of our data: We are collecting and maintaining data because we want to enable great applications, websites, services, and more. This year we focused on better serving the people who use Wikidata’s data and bring it in front of the people who ultimately benefit from it. The Data Reuse Days had some great showcases of what Wikidata enables and also provided good insights into some of the issues that still remain. Two new websites built with data from Wikidata which especially caught people’s attention were WikiTrivia and the globe of notable people.
  • Data quality: Of course, we want to provide reusers and the world with high-quality data, which was the focus of the second Data Quality Days. New tools like the Mismatch Finder will help us build better processes for getting reports about potential issues in our data from larger reusers and others.
  • Wikibase Ecosystem: More and more amazing Wikibase instances are popping up, building out the Wikibase Ecosystem and the wider Linked Data Web and making more data accessible and linked. And with Wikibase.cloud it became even easier to set up a new specialized Wikibase instance and then connect its data to Wikidata’s. Check out Qichwabase for example.

I am excited about what’s to come, among which is a growing lexicographical data corpus that will serve as the basis for Abstract Wikipedia, more involvement of reusers in helping us maintain our data, a growing Wikibase Ecosystem, many new useful and exciting uses of Wikidata’s data, and most importantly I hope to see many of you in-person again.

10 years of Wikidata – 10 years of giving more people more access to more knowledge. Thank you for being a part of it! Here’s to many many more.
