Unprotect mainpage

Please, unprotect mainpage by now : ) I don't see many vandals. Emijrp (talk) 12:55, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Its just protected so that only autoconfirmed users can edit. The protection sounds reasonable (though I believe most of us don't have autoconfirmed status yet). --Hydriz (talk) 12:57, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
What are the limits to become autoconfirmed here ate Wikidata? --TMg (talk) 17:05, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Minimum of 10 edits made and 4 days of account age. This is the global default for all Wikimedia wikis. --Hydriz (talk) 13:42, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
"minimum 4 days" is the global default. But "10 edits" is not. It is only applied for enwiki and some others. -- ChongDae (talk) 09:09, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

When the interface language is set to Vietnamese, clicking the logo leads to Trang Chính, a nonexistent item, rather than Wikidata:Trang Chính. Would an administrator mind changing MediaWiki:Mainpage/vi to Wikidata:Trang Chính? Thank you. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 11:46, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Redirects

Please can an autoconfirmed user create redirects involving the Main Page. At the moment www.wikidata.org leads to a non-existant page, as does the Main page link on the left toolbar, thus making it quite hard to get here. The two I had in mind were as follows, although there might be others worth considering:
1 Page]] → Wikidata:Main Page
Talk:Main Page → Wikidata talk:Main Page.
WFC19:51, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

I do not know what you are meaning. In my browser all links work excellent. Which language have you selected? --Bene* (talk) 19:59, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
British English. Even if the toolbar link is fixed for those of us who speak the mother form of English, the redirects would still be helpful for users of all forms of the language who are in the habit of typing the page in the search bar. —WFC20:04, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Surely, but I just realize that it isn't possible to create a new page. You can only create items (also as autoconfirmed). Think you have to ask an administrator. --Bene* (talk) 20:08, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Hello. Redirected the talk page entry as suggested by WFC. Sorry, the true Main Page link will have to wait for somebody with more authority. Reedy, perhaps? MODCHK (talk) 06:46, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
This seems to be the same problem we have for "pt-br". See below: #Portuguese_main_page. Helder 22:48, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia main page exemple

Copy from meta page draft

Hello, do you know the Wikipedia:2012 main page redesign proposal ? It can perhaps show some design's exemple for the main page of wikidata. A Straw Poll is ongoing.

In the same idea, can I remplace the bottom section (the interwiki section) by the bottom section of w:Wikipedia:2012 main page redesign proposal/Pretzels (or w:Wikipedia:2012 main page redesign proposal/Nouill (alt. version of Pretzels design)) ? --Nouill (talk) 20:02, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Support your version of the bottom section. --Stryn (talk) 08:11, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I did the following: User:Stryn/Sandbox. Do you like it? Could it be a new bottom section? Feel free to edit my sandbox if you know how to do it better. --Stryn (talk) 20:53, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Hmm... no answers... Preview is here: Finnish main page (see bottom section). --Stryn (talk) 13:25, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Portuguese main page

If I click in the logo, the site goes to a non existent page (with the message MediaWiki:wikibase-noitem, which is not very helpful in this case). The same happens if I click in the following link: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/?uselang=pt-br How can we get it to redirect to Wikidata:Página principal? Helder 14:16, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

BTW, if I access MediaWiki:Wikibase-noitem directly, I get a server error:
PHP fatal error in /usr/local/apache/common-local/php-1.21wmf3/extensions/Wikibase/repo/Wikibase.hooks.php line 153:

Croatian main page

I tried to make a croatian main page, but it prooved to be more difficult than I thought. I ended up with two pages that are not linked from anywhere, and I guess they have to be deleted: [2] [3] --Janjko (talk) 00:29, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

If you want to know how to add the link to the top of the other language versions (English, French, German, ...), then just add the link to Template:MainPageLanguages. If you need more help, please reply. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:37, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
✓ Done! :) Fixed, you can edit the new version at Wikidata:Glavna stranica (copy a different language edition to start translating). PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:42, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you! It's translated. --Janjko (talk) 11:55, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
Could someone change "Glavna stranica" to "Wikidata:Glavna stranica" on this page: http://wikidata.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Mainpage/hr Janjko (talk) 14:54, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Done. --Yair rand (talk) 14:56, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

"Statistics" in wrong language

I've set "pt-BR" in my language preferences and if I access Wikidata:Main Page, which is in English, I see the content of MediaWiki:Statistics/pt-br in the top right corner of the page (this comes from Template:Main Page/Header, where we have ""). It should display MediaWiki:Statistics for consistency with the rest of the page. Helder 11:33, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm facing the same problem. My language preference setting is set to "English", but frequently visit Japanese Main Page (Wikidata:メインページ). In this case, ONLY "Statistics" is displayed in English and the others in Japanese. I believe that the label (display text) should be supplied as a parameter value in language versions of the main page such as Wikidata:メインページ rather than just using in Template:Main Page/Header. -Penn Station (talk) 01:13, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
I think creating MediaWiki:statistics/fr, etc. would fix this. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:03, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
Ohhh, now I see the problem. We could use . I'll see if I can fix that. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:17, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
✓ Done. Added the {langcode} parameter to the Main Page/Header template. (see updated Template:Main Page/Header) PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:25, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
It's still the same. If you choose some language (like Finnish), "Tilastot" appears on any main page, when it should change on other language pages. --Stryn (talk) 20:42, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
Ok, I fixed all the pages from Arabic to Italian. I did NOT fix any others yet, waiting for community response. Please reply, thanks, πr2 (tc) 21:45, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
Ok, I see, thank you! --Stryn (talk) 21:59, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
Done for all. --Stryn (talk) 12:40, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, PiRSquared17. I have updated Wikidata:メインページ to to display "Statistics" in Japanese by supplying langcode=ja for there and it now works fine:). --Penn Station (talk) 09:48, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Probably worth a Main Page mention? —WFC17:10, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

+1. Conny (talk) 18:38, 10 November 2012 (UTC).
I've been bold and had a go. —WFC18:55, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Maybe we could make a "milestones" page? On the Finnish Wikipedia we have w:fi:Wikipedia:Virstanpylväät (Engl. Milestones). I think it makes no sense to list the milestones in the main page (in the future). --Stryn (talk) 08:37, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I think milestones will be a much bigger deal once we're at the point when they only happen once every few years. --Yair rand (talk) 08:52, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Red link translations

In my opinion, we shouldn't have all these red links on the top of the main page. Whilst they encourage people to create new articles, they are probably not the most aesthetically pleasing way of encouraging growth. Does anyone else think we should remove them? PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:01, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Personally I don't think we should remove them. While I also find them unattractive, I take those redlinks as an indication that we have yet to attract sufficient active editors from languages such as Malayalam and Hebrew. —WFC10:03, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
I think it is better to use the translate extension for this page. Helder 15:38, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Redirect

Please create Main_Page to redirect to Wikidata:Main_Page. This will come up constantly in the future. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:23, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

See also #Redirects. There was probably one before me as well. —WFC08:41, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Please delete

Wikivoyage

Could someone please add Wikivoyage to the footer of sister projects? I don't manage to change that complicated template, which I think is a bad sign. :( – Thx, anyway. --Aschmidt (talk) 02:32, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Added. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 02:44, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
I thought Wikivoyage wasn't officially launching until December? It doesn't even have an official logo yet. --Yair rand (talk) 02:57, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
It does have seven language projects right now in the beta phase that are open to registering and editing (de, en, fr, it, nl, ru and sv). The logo is still undecided right now, but all the languages are using the old logo temporarily until a new one is done being voted on. We can replace it once it's official. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 03:01, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
How do i use that? Can i link a specific Q to a Wikivoyage page already? Or even import interwiki from there? Mutante (talk) 15:38, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Interwiki is d: to link here from Wikivoyage and voy: to link there from here; I haven't tried "a specific Q" but I presume this should work from any WMF project? K7L (talk) 15:45, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Alright, thanks, i actually expected it to be "voy" and liked that better than just "y", but how do i technically add such a link to a page here, say to link from Q365 to voy:Cologne?. The interwiki links sure work here in Talk text, but i wanted to add it as actual data. Cheers, Mutante (talk) 15:54, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
That's currently not possible. Only links to Wikipedia articles can be added. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:14, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Like Lydia said, it's currently a technical impossibility to link a wikivoyage (or any other sister project other than Wikipedia) to a Wikidata data page. I'd like to think it's being discussed (or considered) being in future versions of WD software. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 22:42, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Wikivoyage has not officially launched (it's in beta), so a link shouldn't be added; it's not supposed to be publicized yet. sumone10154(talk) 05:47, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Milestones

Is it really necessary to add 175k items as a milestone? I wouldn't consider it one. sumone10154(talk) 20:21, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

We can but than we should not add 200.000 because it is endless to add every new item with little more zeros. --Bene* (talk) 20:46, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
200k will replace 175k.[4] --Stryn (talk) 20:48, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying that, Stryn. —Theopolisme 20:54, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
OK, I think that's ok :-) --Bene* (talk) 20:56, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
On a related point, is there any alternative way of starting a milestone sentence? The "Item ID (number)" format is starting to look a bit dull now. —WFC05:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps, "label became the XXth item on Wikidata, just X days after opening!" "Humans and bots alike have collaborated to now add 200K items to Wikidata, the 200000th of which is about description." Etc, etc. —Theopolisme 12:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Sounds really good. I like those sentences. Please add more of them ;-) --Bene* (talk) 16:33, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Is there a way of tracking exactly how many items we have? It's just that I have noticed a few gaps. Q193951, Q193952 and Q193953, for instance. I can't see any log actions to explain why they're not there? —WFC21:41, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
The IDs have been "swallowed" by unsuccessful attempts to create an item. --Kolja21 (talk) 00:49, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
