Joining the team[edit]

Hi. I'm looking forward to working with the existing team. Wikidata:Bureaucrats says that we have a mailing list - is it still used? If so, please approve my request to join that I just submitted. If not, we should update the page to remove the mention. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 18:00, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am not on that list... If it exists, it may be worth joining. --Lymantria (talk) 05:33, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I sent private messages to both of you concerning the list. My apologies for being slow, I have been on holidays for the last two weeks, with the last two days in the flight / stopover. Ymblanter (talk) 09:30, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Block Pi bot[edit]

I cleaned up P625 for villages in Andhra Pradesh, India. I have deleted P625 on 2000+ villages, as the values are duplicated on several others. The import from enwiki is the main source of these duplicates. I find Pi bot again adding coordinates importing from enwp. As we are participating in Coordinate Me 2024, the operation of the bot is a hindrance. Hence I request it to be blocked till 1st June 2024. I have already raised the issue at User_talk:Mike_Peel#Please_do_not_import_coordinate_claims_from_enwp_for_villages_in_Andhra_Pradesh. I request the admins to immediately block User:Pi bot. Arjunaraoc (talk) 04:24, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Arjunaraoc: The bot task is working as intended, as the coordinates are available on enwiki, and the villages should have coordinates here. If they are wrong coordinates, you should fix them here and on enwiki, you should not just delete them. Mike Peel (talk) 07:30, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel, We are fixing first on Wikidata, as we can validate using scripts with OSM. Later we will update on Wikipedia. As the special contest to improve wikidata is going on, I request you to stop your bot for the period of the campaign. Arjunaraoc (talk) 07:36, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arjunaraoc: In that case, update the coordinates here as you go, don't just delete them. The bot is not checking for coordinate mismatches, so it would not revert changes. Mike Peel (talk) 07:40, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel, Use of quick statements requires that I delete the old P625 which is incorrect and add a new entry for P625, with source information. The first one can only be done with Quickstatements Ver 1, and second step is more convenient with Quick statements Ver 2. We have over 16000 villages out of which we need to add about coordinates to 13000 villages. I have done the first step already. I am on the second step right now and contest participants will only look at villages without P625 to add manually. Hence it is important to stop any automated bot updates which do not have any quality checks for their imports this month. Alternately, if it is possible, you can exclude all the villages of Andhra Pradesh from your bot operation for this month. I read on Wikiproject Geocordinates that bulk of populating the coordinates is already done on English wikipedia. If you stop your bot for three weeks, I do not think any major backlog will pileup. Arjunaraoc (talk) 07:48, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I think you're approaching the problem the wrong way. I guess quickstatements doesn't allow modification of values (which is odd), and I'm not sure why you aren't using pywikibot to replace values instead. You could run smaller quickstatement batches to make sure deletion/addition takes place in short order. However, as a gesture of good faith, I've stopped the coordinates import task for now, and will restart it next month. Note that Pi bot does a lot of different things (see its user page for a list), and your request to block it would have caused a lot of issues if it had been actioned. Mike Peel (talk) 16:49, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel, Thanks for your suggestion about using Pywikibot. I will investigate it. Thanks for your cooperation to suspend coordinates import task. I will let you know once we complete the task early, so that you can resume your coordinate import task. Arjunaraoc (talk) 22:06, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
