1. The duplicate reference gadget cannot duplicate across items.
2. This could help when we later use LUA module to generate the list of episodes and their references in w:List of One Piece episodes (season_1)#cite ref-rank1 5-0, without generating too much duplicated references. We can inform the module to understand this semantic.

The fact that the duplicate reference gadget doesn't work across items is unfortunately true. In practice it means in a case like this that it's the easiest to add the data via QuickStatements. In Wikidata we don't have a concept of "too much duplicated references".

The information about references that stored has to be generally understood by many different data users and not only one specific tool that's custom made to deal with One Piece data.

Importendly, when two items have the value for stated in (P248) they are understood by our data model to have the same source. The attempt to store explanations inside of stated in (P248) that reference a principle of citation break that semantic. If you want to make the argument that we should store some form of citation explanation, that would need it's own property and can't be done via stated in (P248). I however don't think a desire to avoid duplicate references is a sufficient reason for creating such a property. ChristianKl (✉) 15:27, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
