Blocked from editing if not logged in[edit]

Hi, I don't often edit items without logging in, but apparently I've been blocked for some kind of vandalism, which I don't have any idea about what I may have done wrong:

You are currently unable to edit Wikidata. You are still able to view pages and data entries, but you are now not able to edit, move, or create them. Editing from 2600:387:0:0:0:0:0:0/43 has been blocked (disabled) by ‪Jasper Deng‬ for the following reason(s): Inappropriate use of user talk page while blocked: Vandalism This block (ID #51606) has been set to expire: 02:12, 22 December 2024. Even if blocked, you will usually still be able to edit your user talk page and email other editors. To discuss the block, you may contact ‪Jasper Deng‬ or another administrator. For more information, including how to request an unblock, please read the guide to appealing blocks.

I've messaged Jasper Deng about this from my user talk page, and another editor said he hasn't logged in in several weeks and I should ask about having my block removed here on this noticeboard. I'm a property creator and I believe a trusted editor, so if I vandalized anything (which I can't imagine doing), it was completely unintentional. I would have liked to have been contacted about it as well before being blocked. AdamSeattle (talk) 20:47, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A /43 IPV6 block applies to a very large number of IPV6 addresses, so it probably wasn't anything you personally did. (Edit: this block seems to be an AT&T Mobility IPv6 block, so random cell phone users would have it). ArthurPSmith (talk) 21:02, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is this IP block stopping you from doing anything? Isn't logging in enough to resolve the problem? Bovlb (talk) 21:03, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, logging in resolves the problem. But I didn't know why I was being accused of vandalism! AdamSeattle (talk) 02:05, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like you're sharing an ISP with some vandals. Bovlb (talk) 03:27, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It does? If you happen to edit on blocked networks often you can request IP-block exemption. Sounds like you might have a use for it. Infrastruktur (talk) 07:53, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I could be wrong, but I think OP has two problems: They cannot edit without logging in; and they felt that they were being accused of doing something wrong. I don't think that an IP-block exemption would help with either of those.
Perhaps we could somehow communicate better to people affected by an IP block, especially a range block. From the message quoted above, there is no indication that:
  • This is an IP block and may be directed at someone other than the person experiencing it.
  • This is a range block and potentially affects many editors.
  • This block does not prevent registered users from logging in and editing.
All of those would have been useful to the OP. Bovlb (talk) 14:57, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For convenience, this message comes from MediaWiki:Blockedtext. Bovlb (talk) 15:24, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good analysis. The question then becomes what to do about it. As I see it there are two options: 1) Make a small change to the blocking text saying that you might be hit by an indiscriminate block, or 2) Go through a lot of trouble to change how blocking messages are displayed on all wikis by making a detailed proposal on Phabricator and collectively hold our breaths.
Bovlb have made similar observations in the past, such as recognizing talk pages for IPv6 is basically utterly borken, and yet they are still a part of Mediawiki... If this doesn't make you frustrated, it should. I'm happy to explain the technical details there if asked. Infrastruktur (talk) 19:23, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How about something like this?
If you are not logged in, then you may be affected by a block aimed at a different user with the same or a similar IP address. If this is the case, you may be able to bypass the block simply by logging in. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Looks good to me, it's simple and friendly. –FlyingAce✈hello 20:47, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have added the text. Bovlb (talk) 23:27, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In regards to IPv6 talk pages not being useful, I remember seeing something about the development of auto created temporary accounts. It looks like development is still ongoing, see mw:Trust and Safety Product/Temporary Accounts and mw:Trust and Safety Product/Temporary Accounts/FAQ -- William Graham (talk) 01:47, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request to edit Q29642078[edit]

I want to add the Turkish definitions "o****u" and "k****k" for the English word "b***h".

But I cannot add it because the page is protected.

Could someone else add it? 95.70.138.202 09:19, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know what "o****u" and "k****k" are, but this item is only for the topic of female dogs — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:23, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
