This page concerns a bacterium[edit]

Hi, can you please check whether the [ro] description in "Moorella perchloratireducens" Q61670636 is correct? I can't Romanian, but from an automatic translation, it seems that "ciupercă" means fungus (mushroom) instead of bacterium.Eepavan (talk) 07:44, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You are entirely right. It seems that it is a bacterium, and the confusion is created from it's superior taxon "Moorella" Q19647130 being a fungus. There are several such cases where a bacterium species is linked to a fungus genus. Not sure where the problem is. KlaudiuMihaila (talk) 09:30, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, the issue was related to a wrong merging previous done between the item Moorella-bacterium and the item Moorella related to a fungus. I've already restored the previous, correct version of the item related to the bacterium (the last one before the erroneus merging). Moreover, since you have already corrected the superior taxon, anything should be right now. Eepavan (talk) 09:47, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for reporting and helping fix the issue. As I mentioned before, there are several such cases that I found before I started adding the descriptions. I wonder if there is an easy way to find these and fix them as automatically as possible. KlaudiuMihaila (talk) 09:51, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I’ve spotted the issue because I’ve been working on this page before the wrong merging has been performed, but I’m not able to automatically correct such issues, unfortunately.Eepavan (talk) 10:36, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to contribute to a WikiProject Covid-19 ?[edit]

Hello,

I saw you contributed to COVID-19 (Q84263196) and I was wondering if you would be interested in helping to create a Wikidata WikiProject COVID-19.

The goals would be initially (of course, they can be changed):

create a data model for instances of disease outbreak (Q3241045).

monitor the quality of the pages about national outbreaks listed in 2019–20 COVID-19 outbreak by country and territory (Q83741704).

curate the wikidata items relevant for describing the outbreaks and the virus itself.

curate and improve the information on Wikidata about scientific articles regarding the coronavirus (similar to the Wikidata:WikiProject_Zika_Corpus).

think and develop ways to process these items to improve access to information (for example, via automated articles in languages that currently do not have pages about country-specific outbreaks).

Would you like to participate in this effort?

I am trying to gather the Wikidata editors actively involved in the topic.I believe that if we act together, we can have a shot at aiding the global effort in containing the pandemic.

Thanks!

—Andreitalk 09:12, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot[edit]

Hi. Your bot is adding "Native label (Romanian)" to some names. OK. However, then it should also remove "Native label (multiple languages)". Because if something is Romanian, it is Romanian, if something is "multiple languages" then it is "multiple languages" (no need to add Romanian). IMHO Wikidata is fast getting filled with stupidites like Muhammet (Dutch) or Söylemezoğlu (German). Names belong to people and their ancestral languages, not to places. People move around with the names they have been carrying as their ancestors did. (You can ignore the previous two sentences if you wish.) Best. --E4024 (talk) 14:58, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@E4024: Hi, and thank you for getting in touch. I completely agree with you, names belong to people and their ancestral languages, and as such I added Romanian, which is a language. I am not very happy with the "multiple languages" approach, as it can mean anything - from two to all languages. I would much rather have a long list of specific languages instead. This is far more useful for querying the data. So, my bot just adds the "Romanian" language item to the list, without modifying the other values, so that the change does not break any other query relying on "multiple languages". I am almost sure that this change does not create any massive discomfort other than possibly creating a long list of languages.
All in all, I am not sure that the current modelling of first and last names in wikidata is entirely the best one. But until a better model is put in place, I would prefer to have a long list of languages. Thanks! KlaudiuMihaila (talk) 20:13, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Klaudiu, please look at my arrangements in Polat (Q56244525); your bot (or myself?) is also confusing "native language" with "languages of (languages that use a) name", IMHO... (Using reliable sources would help not to be reverted.) Best. --E4024 (talk) 14:56, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think the two properties are overlapping significantly, at least in this case of first and family names. A name can be specific to a culture/language, and occur in other cultures/languages as people move around the world. At the same time, a name can occur in more than one language to start with, without any real connection between the two cases other than that they are the same string of characters. Your arrangement in Polat are great for the first case that I mentioned. All the best! KlaudiuMihaila (talk) 15:39, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
These (2, 3) are very unpleasant edits. They do not cover reality. Can you tell me what the Romanian name "Zalai", "Bodrogi", "Zilahi" means? I would undo all the editing because the robot can’t think, just humans, but that wasn’t thoughtful. Palotabarát (talk) 22:04, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Label[edit]

Hello Klaudiu, how are you doing these days? I hope good. A little question: as the search engine on this project leaves much to be desired, I couldn't find the last name Alexiu, so I ended up creating Q108088149 :/

Couldn't your bot add the english label too, so it would move up in the search result?

Will do ;) KlaudiuMihaila (talk) 12:05, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Mulțumesc anticipat.--Mishuletz (talk) 15:54, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment[edit]

Dear KlaudiuMihaila,

I hope you are doing well,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I am working on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender model that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our model based on your previous edits. Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published to a research venue.

The study should take no more than 15 minutes.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSees9WzFXR0Vl3mHLkZCaByeFHRrBy51kBca53euq9nt3XWog/viewform?usp=sf_link

Then, I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about the study, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.
