Bloom clock[edit]

Hey there I am reconstructing Czech Bloom Clock project, which colects gardening data about plants, especially flowering times and I was wondering weather we can cooperate with wikidata, but at this point I see it wont happen, because:

  • some properties for plants we need are even non existent
  • we do not how to integrate maps, list, graphs and other results to local Wikiversity
  • mix of conditions from the Wikidata data and our own harvested data will probably need the knowledge of advanced programing.

--Juandev (talk) 12:34, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Juandev: It's always possible!
  • What are the properties that you want to create?
  • Editors here will be happy to help you on how to integrate Wikidata data on your project. There is a help page, but not complete.
  • What are the data that you have? How are they stored?

Plant species not on Wikidata[edit]

Over at Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Taxonomy#Plant_species_not_on_Wikidata I've posted a request for help relating to some plant species that are apparently not on Wikidata. I'm posting here because there may be experts in this WikiProject who can help. Cheers, MartinPoulter (talk) 14:43, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What are the best modelled items for your areas of interest?[edit]

Hi all

Over the past few months myself and others have been thinking about the best way to help people model subjects consistently on Wikidata and provide new contributors with a simple way to understand how to model content on different subjects. Our first solution is to provide some best practice examples of items for different subjects which we are calling Model items. E.g the item for William Shakespeare (Q692) is a good example to follow for creating items about playwright (Q214917). These model items are linked to from the item for the subject to make them easier to find and we have tried to make simple to understand instructions.

We would like subject matter experts to contribute their best examples of well modelled items. We are asking all the Wikiprojects to share with us the kinds of subjects you most commonly add information about and the best examples you have of this kind of item. We would like to have at least 5 model items for each subject to show the diversity of the subject e.g just having William Shakespeare (Q692) as a model item for playwright (Q214917), while helpful may not provide a good example for people trying to model modern poets from Asia.

You can add model items yourself by using the instructions at Wikidata:Model items. It may be helpful to have a discussion here to collate information first.

Thanks

A possible Science/STEM User Group[edit]

There's a discussion about a possible User Group for STEM over at Meta:Talk:STEM_Wiki_User_Group. The idea would be to help coordinate, collaborate and network cross-subject, cross-wiki and cross-language to share experience and resources that may be valuable to the relevant wikiprojects. Current discussion includes preferred scope and structure. T.Shafee(evo&evo) (talk) 02:36, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Canonical views?[edit]

Currently, I looked into some cultivars, notably Dahlia (see section above), Rosa and Clematis.

As I am not a botanist, I thought I'd rather ask you. What should be the canonical images we should have available on any plant?

  • For Dahlia and Rosa, an image of the flower is generally a good choice for P18 (plan view and/or side view).
  • For Clematis, additionally, it seems that we should always have a general view of the plant (not that it shouldn't be there for the others).
  • Maybe separate images of leaves should be included too.

Further views could be:

  • flower buds
  • ..

I don't think Commons has too many categories that could help with that. I found Category:Close-up photographs of flowers and Category:Close-up photographs of plants. --- Jura 13:00, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Frankly, plants should have multiple photos--inflorescense, fruit, habit, leaf, stem, root... --Pitke (talk) 21:05, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Flower descriptions[edit]

For some time, I wondering what would be a good way to add descriptions of flowers beyond flower color (P2827).

To avoid making more separate properties, I thought it might be interesting to create a property "flower characteristics" and use items with that property to describe its features.

The property would then have several values which, together with qualifier would make the description. What do you think of it? --- Jura 13:21, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jura1: : "Plant description" or "Plant characteristics" would be even better, and then you can add items to describe the whole plant, including stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds… TED 13:59, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is already a property for fruit.
List_of_mushrooms has separate even more detailed properties. --- Jura 14:05, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Plant Use[edit]

Hello :) I see you spoke about include pfaf database entries, has this been done ? Can I work on it ? I'm looking for a way to organize plant usage data. But its a very complex information and i'm not sure how to proceed. Should medicinal use of plants be done in the Medicine project ? Food usage in the Food project ? Or should it be done in a new project we could call Plant Usages ? Can I add information without creating a project ? If so Where should I put the definition of the methodology ?

This data might be use in plantuse https://uses.plantnet-project.org or in wikipedia. Thanks for you advices :)

new properties[edit]

I would like to do several Wikidata:Property proposals (related to botany, horticulture and possibly ecology) soon. I'd welcome (early) participation, e.g. discussing the best data model. Here's a preliminary list:

  • leaf shape: lanceolate, elliptical, ovate, orbicular, needle-shaped, ...
  • leaf length: ≤10 cm, ≥4 cm,
  • leaf width: ≤5 cm, ≥2 cm, ...; preferably for the 95 % frequency interval of full-grown leaves. Should these also be broken up into separate "lower" and "upper" variants, analogous to time span-related properties?
  • leaf margin: entire, serrate, lobed, wavy, ...
  • leaf type: simple, compound, pinnate, sheath, frond, ...
  • leaf arrangement: alternate, opposite, whorled, basal, ...
  • (leaf/stem/fruit/seed/pollen/...) surface: hirsute, glossy/lustrous, ... – applies to part (P518): leaf upper surface, fruit, stem, ...; note: there's the existing physics-related property "surface roughness" (P7083)
  • growth habit: erect, climbing, (tightly) upright, prostrate, spreading, compact, dense, scandent, stemless, clump-forming, overhanging, creeping, ...
  • pests/disease: list of relevant cultivation adversaries
  • flowering period: list of calendar weeks? list of months?, taking two values, e.g. ≥June 10, ≤August 2? Separate "start"/"end" variants might be the way to go, as Special:ListProperties/time seems to suggest (as with P2031/P2032, P7103/P7104, P580/P582, P569/P570, ...; )
  • fruiting time (harvest time?)
  • soil pH: ≤8, ≥6, maximum+minimum pH levels without serious detrimental effects. Should this rather be modeled using separate "minimum" and "maximum" variants? Note: We can already do "instance of: Calcifuge (Q1151696)"
  • soil drainage requirements
  • germination conditions: light germinator (Q1823459), dark germinator (Q1265933), cold germinator (Q2526015), warm germinator (Q1390564)
  • (sun) light exposure requirements: full sun, (partial) shade, ...

I'm also thinking about the following, but have a few more doubts or open questions about them:

  • resistance: deer feeding/grazing, (viral/bacterial/fungal) diseases, insect pests, drought, ... – list of common cultivation challenges to which this crop is largely immune
  • recommended plant spacing
  • water requirements: arid, fresh, moist, aquatic plant (Q186101), ...; i have some doubts here, maybe i will only propose the drainage requirements property for now.
  • soil texture: loam, high organic matter
  • aromatic plant parts. Note: We can already do "has use (P366): flavoring (Q4173974) – applies to part: fruit, leaves, seeds, root, ...", but that is not the same as e.g. tagging the presence of essential oils in parts of the plant tissue, as not every use of aromatic compounds by a plant translates into usefulness for humans.

I am happy to see work to describe the characteristics of organisms better by the means of data. As a side note, I think these type of data is not easily described, and should be thouroughly discussed as you suggest. See existing properties attempting to describe some characteristics: foliage type (P10906), flower color (P2827), is pollinated by (P1703), inflorescence (P3739), hymenium attachment (P785), mushroom cap shape (P784), Possible alternatives to describe each part of a plant is to use has characteristic (P1552) in a way like this: Plantago lanceolata (Q157408)has characteristic (P1552)lanceolate leaf (Q25501730). A claim could also read something like this If it is possible to describe things using existing properties and items we should use those -- Wkee4ager (👨🏼‍💻💬) 21:49, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree – within limits: The creation of the properties "fruit color" (P11220) and "flower color" (P2827) despite the existence of the broader property "color" (P462) indicates that there is no consensus for cumbersome constructions just for the sake of making due with existing properties. And making the largely superfluous statement that a plant has leaves just to create the opportunity to insert that qualifier does not seem like a preferable long-term solution. So most of my suggestions above seem to me less like a question of whether or not we should introduce a new property, but rather about how many new properties we need.
Specifically, I'm unsure about leaf shapes. I think "leaf length" and "leaf width" have to be separate properties. But would we want separate "leaf shape", "leaf margin" and "leaf type", or would we rather put a list of multiple attributes under a single, more general "leaf shape" property, like "pinnate leaf", "serrated leaf margin", "elliptical leaflet"
The same goes for soil: "soil drainage"+"soil moisture"+"soil texture"+"soil pH" vs. consolidated "soil" property with attribute list like: "soil pH 8", "soil pH 7", "soil pH 6", "limy soil", "well-draining soil", "moist soil"?--Cartoffel (talk) 14:13, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
