Moved from text[edit]

  1. Look at the page for the property, eg has edition or translation (P747), where you will see any available model items for the property. property search can be helpful to find properties.
  2. On the property page you will find a property called model item (P5869) which gives a list of model items for the use of that property.
  3. A full list of properties which have model items can be found here (may take several seconds to load).
  4. You can also make request for best practice examples for properties on Wikidata:Project chat or a relevant WikiProject, please then add these suggestions as model items to the property.
  • For properties: this query provides a list of the most commonly used properties which don't yet have 5 model items.

Showcase items?[edit]

How does Model Items relate to Showcase items. Ainali (talk) 08:35, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ainali:, thanks for the message, I think the difference is that showcase items are an equivalent to featured articles on Wikipedia and model items are equivalent to something like A class articles, not perfect, but good enough to provide examples for others to follow. I'd also suggest that perhaps Showcase items aren't really available on a wide enough range of items to be useful guides, they've been a concept for over 5 years and there are less than 40 showcase items in total. --John Cummings (talk) 13:03, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer. Can I suggest changing the name then? Because model in this sense makes my mind go to the ontology (which requires modeling) and not to quality. That is, to me it feels like an item that is well connected in it's hierarchy of items rather than an item that is halfway on becoming a showcase item. Why not just call it A Class Items, or Good Items? By doing that we can still talk about model items as items that help users figure out how they should be linked together. Ainali (talk) 14:08, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ainali: I'm very much considering the name, I think I explained badly... model items are very much about schemas, kind of a good example for new people and people not familiar with the topic to copy and a way to try and standardise the schema for a subject (before something long term is sorted out). Maybe a better way to describe it is something like 'an example for the schema for the subject, providing commonly used properties for that kind of item and reaches a certain level of quality'.... this needs some more work and defining. I'm kind of suprised that there are so few showcase items, it doesn't seem like the requirements are super high. --John Cummings (talk) 23:26, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Simplify?[edit]

I really like this effort and think it's long overdue. My first reaction is that the page doesn't immediately seem to give a list of model items to be inspired by. So I'm afraid it may be overinstruction – I'm not sure what the "ask" is without having to read a few paragraphs of text. Perhaps simplify the page? -- Fuzheado (talk) 12:41, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, I'm planning on simplifying it in the new year, the issue at the moment is there aren't many model items available so the focus is on helping people add them. --John Cummings (talk) 09:33, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Since there aren't that many model items yet, perhaps it is worth adding a link to all of them? Ainali (talk) 14:11, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Items for books and editions[edit]

I've created a small set of items to be a good practice guide for representing books and their editions. The items individually aren't especially great, but collectively they are intended to be a model of how to represent this type of data. In fact, part of the point is that items about books should ideally have very few properties and that most of the properties should instead attach to the editions or translations. An address to the people of England, Ireland, and Scotland, on the present important crisis of affairs (Q39638127) and its linked editions, are a model of a publication that went through mulitiple editions; some numbered, some not. Political Disquisitions (Q39643140) and its linked editions are meant to be a model of a multi-volume work and its multiple editions. So this might be an ideal example of model items, or maybe not if model items are thought of just as individual items. MartinPoulter (talk) 11:02, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Model item lookup script[edit]

I've written a small userscript that adds a 'Lookup model item' button next to the instance of (P31) property on every page. It can be found over here. Husky (talk) 21:46, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
