Scope[edit]

This shouldn't be limited to persons. Danrok (talk) 15:52, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. This property could be useful for other domains. Ayack (talk) 16:11, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It should be limited to active participants that played an active role on the battlefield. Otherwise we could link millions of victims and war survivers of London and Berlin to this property and lots of politicians and staff of institutions involved without the person ever been near the battleground like the US presidents, defense ministers, ingeneers of weaponry .... So I´d like to ad "in an active way".--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 19:17, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not really convinced. Why should we exclude the commander-in-chief or defense ministers? --- Jura 10:45, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Replace "the person" with "a military person" then? Oliv0 (talk) 18:54, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No. Wars and battles predate the modern "military person" by thousands of years. We shouldn't just think about these things in a modern context. The scope should cover all periods of time, if possible. Danrok (talk) 19:45, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Danrok: So also for people like below: someone writing a report about the refugee camps of a war with some political consequences? (and whatever is decided here should be clearly specified in the description) Oliv0 (talk) 14:55, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oliv0 Possibly, a journalist might be included. But, your just giving a hypothetical example. It would be easier to decide if given a real example. Also, bear in mind there are other properties which can be used to connect a person to a war. Such as subject type properties for an author's book, or work location for a journalist working in a war zone. Danrok (talk) 15:02, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Danrok: that was a real example, detailed in the section below. Oliv0 (talk) 15:43, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oliv0 Yes I see it now. Certainly, all reporters who report from wars should be included, probably along with all other civilian-type workers, e.g. doctors, aid workers, engineers, etc. Danrok (talk) 15:50, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In this case the description is correct. TomT0m asked about it so I ping him now. Oliv0 (talk) 16:02, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How about using this Property in elements about military divisions and probably weapons too ?? For example T-34 (Q172233) was used in WW-2... --Rodion 4000+ (talk) 14:50, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Scope bis[edit]

@GerardM, Ayack, Giftzwerg 88, Oliv0, Snipre:

What kind of involvement is supposed to be covered ? Is a political who did was in charge at the time but was not involved in fights as a fighter, is the case covered by this property ? We got a question about this about this diff for example https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q12946&diff=prev&oldid=159267321 (added by Widar by GerardM, by the way, where does the information come from and can we trace back to the source ?) author  TomT0m / talk page 13:48, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Source, source, source. Stop with data import as function of "I think this is the truth". This kind of endless discussion can be avoided just using a simple rule: put a source. We can't analyze every situation and define rules or comment for every case. This is not the job of contributors and if people want to start that kind of job, they can start a job of journalist or historian to produce the references. Snipre (talk) 14:28, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No it wont. The question about the scope of this item is still relevant even without the scope of the discussion. Note that I already asked Gerard about the source. author  TomT0m / talk page 14:31, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The question is, as TomT0m wrote on Wikidata:Bistro: "Is this about a military member who participated in a conflict or about a public figure more or less involved in the events?" The question came from fr:Michel Rocard, a prominent French politician who is in fr:Category:Personnalité de la guerre d'Algérie because he "wrote a report regarding the widely ignored refugee camps of the Algerian War (1954–62)" (en:Michel Rocard), and this is probably why User:GerardM added "conflict (P607): Algerian War (Q200790)". This is the same as User:Giftzwerg 88's question above: the scope of this property has to be exactly defined. And concerning Giftzwerg 88's phrasing above, it could be argued that through the report he wrote and its consequences, Michel Rocard did take part in the events of the war "in an active way". Oliv0 (talk) 15:32, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, he went to Algeria, as a reporter, so that means he participated in some way. Danrok (talk) 15:21, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Are battles allowed to get a P607?[edit]

See for instance, Battle of Mörchingen and Dieuze (Q48756334) which I get an error message about P607...? Bouzinac (talk) 20:20, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Civilians in world war II[edit]

As discussed per above. Do anyone know if there have been introduced any common acceptance|nonacceptance that civilian killed by military actions, political prisoners andg politicians opposing or contrubuting to the conflict can be used with conflict (P607). Pinging @GerardM, Ayack, Giftzwerg 88, Oliv0, Snipre, TomT0m: Pmt (talk) 20:31, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

nesting one conflict within an other[edit]

Is the best way to indicate a battle is part of a war to use part of (P361) or conflict (P607)? Vicarage (talk) 13:16, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've chosen part of (P361) Vicarage (talk) 19:51, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are 500 part of (P361) compared with 16000 conflict (P607). I'm going to transfer them, and when complete change the constraint to discourage its use for military operations. Vicarage (talk) 14:49, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Using for navies[edit]

We have 6 conflicts recorded for the Royal Navy (Q172771), 98 total for all navies, which is either pitifully few or too many. Generally the conflicts themselves record the countries taking part, and rarely the branches of the armed forces as has part(s) (P527) qualifiers. After all you can normally expect a war or a naval battle to have the navy taking part. I think we should do the same, removing the conflict entries from navies.
