Scope[edit]

This property should be used in the same manner as video (P10). If a video is relevant to the item, it should be offered to the user, no matter where it is stored, or what its license is. We are linking to plenty of non-free web pages, after all. --Magnus Manske (talk) 09:18, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

More URL formatters?[edit]

So video can be embedded via iframe with the URL https://www.youtube.com/embed/$1. For the privacy conscious there's a "nocookie" variant (initially US gov website, now EU cookie law) https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/$1. Dispenser (talk) 17:15, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Don't use on people[edit]

Evidently, this property YouTube video ID (P1651) should not be used on instance of humans. But what if the YouTube video is an interview of the subject & they are the focus for its duration? I see no fundamental difference between this and an image or a voice recording. Here's one example for the late Norm Platnick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZWIidriEo0 --Dshorthouse (talk) 16:36, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @קיין ומוויסנדיק פּרעפֿערענצן:, the property YouTube video ID (P1651) should only be used on items that represent one of the following:

video recording (Q34508), film (Q11424), episode (Q1983062), television station (Q1616075), oration (Q861911), extended play (Q169930), event (Q1656682), symphony (Q9734), trailer (Q622550), composed musical work (Q207628), cover version (Q155171), work (Q386724).

Not for things that are vaguely related to the subject of the item:

Björk (Person) → efdPHHlLTgI (Random collection of Songs by Björk)

Or should it? --Shisma (talk) 05:47, 27 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shisma! I am very happy for your commment. I inserted P1651 WLH at Yuri Levitan (Q982056 R) adding sources about his speach as moderator of Soviet Radio Moscow (Q18555670 R) related to the start and end of WWII. I used the property at Lord's Prayer (Q23393 R) to be able to add examples linking to languages with a restrictor number of contribeeors eiter at the WMF projects or at Wikidata. Leonard Nimoy (Q16345 R) is adding information not konwn to most of the WMF contributors, Cighid (Q354358 R) about articles of the most infamuous places of euthanasia (Q100159 R) of our time has no internal WMF resources available. I tried to describe what is available via Youtube. Please take a look at the way I used it also at pages related to Yiddish songs (Q8053529 R WLH). I used more different additional qualifiers performer (P175), language of work or name (P407), title (P1476) and sometimes also instance of (P31) I discovered more then 200 unlinked pages at shortlink to something meaning wikisource:yi:category:songs. Please look at my edits in detail. Would be most thankfull for any workable solution. Best regards

I'm not really convinced by some of your others. If it's a video of a song, instead of adding it to the item of a performer, I'd rather put that on the item for the song or possibly on a separate item for the video clip. --- Jura 18:45, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Link to youtube video with precise time[edit]

Hi, could we somehow link youtube video with precise time? Format is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&t=TIME_IN_SECONDS. As i understand, there is potential way with support for more arguments in formatter URL (P1630) and use time qualifier. Is there some activity for this support? Skim (talk) 11:29, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to be more useful for references, in which case I would use reference URL (P854). What is your use case? —Dexxor (talk) 15:02, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dexxor: For example i have conference Otevřená data ve veřejné správě 2020 (Q101114415) and presentation lecture Ukázková aplikace nad otevřenými daty obce (Q101138985). But only one video on youtube. Yes i could create described at URL (P973) with link to lecture. I was thinking about better solution. I added link. Skim (talk) 13:41, 16 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can use time index (P4895) as a qualifier – Loominade (talk) 15:02, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Format[edit]

Video IDs on YouTube are 64-bit integers expressed in base64 (specifically the modified alphabet from RFC 4648 section 5). Since 11 base64 characters are equivalent to 66 bit, the last two bits are always zero. As a result, the last character can only take certain values. Therefore, a more accurate video ID format pattern is [A-Za-z0-9_-]{10}[AEIMQUYcgkosw048].

It's worth mentioning that YouTube used to ignore the last two bits. For example, any video with an ID ending with A could also be retrieved by replacing it with a B, C, or D. This, however, fixed sometime in 2020, to my knowledge in silence, indicating that this was never intended to be supported. Nevertheless, I wanted to bring this up for discussion first due to such video IDs having been 'valid' in some sense in the past, although the proper ID always had the format above and it is trivial to fix such mangled IDs.

Qualifier "title" or "named as"[edit]

I think we should use only one qualifier, I prefer "title", but it seems most have used "named as" Please share your opinion Germartin1 (talk) 12:20, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Scope needs serious clarification[edit]

The documentation doesn't seem to make clear whether this property should only be used for a "native" web video (e.g. creations originally released online), an authorized YT mirror of any video (e.g. a television episode, a movie), any YT mirror of the relevant video (even unauthorized), or for any video related at all to the subject manner (I hope not!). This came up because someone added this property to a movie with a totally unauthorized copyright infringement YT upload of the entire movie. On Wikipedia, the answer would be pretty simple - revert it as a copyright infringement - but the Wikidata item's scope is so unclear, and there's a talk page comment above about how "If a video is relevant to the item, it should be offered to the user, no matter where it is stored, or what its license is."

Personally, I would suggest that this *only* be used for native web videos, and failing that, only for "authorized" uploads of normal movies / TV episodes (which might well be paywall locked). However, I wanted to check in here first. Whatever the decision is, the scope should be made more clear in the documentation, even if it's "anything goes" (although this will lead to lists of related videos pages and pages long if we include every snarky reaction / independent review / etc.). SnowFire (talk) 13:16, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd limit the scope to things that are videos themselves, and the YouTube version is complete (trailer with qualifier) and either authorised or in the public domain/creative commons. Things that have videos about them should use described at URL (P973), for footage of events, reviews and documentaries on the subject, again if legal. YouTube has many high quality technical videos that make as good an introduction to the subject as a wikipedia article. Vicarage (talk) 06:52, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. But consider that since YouTube Music (Q28404534) every music recording now licenced by google also has a youtube video id. For instance wQchKv6OSQA is a perfectly legitimate youtube id of Ace of Spades (Q2526077). And since every movie sold on Google Play (Q79576) also technically has a youtube id (for instance Everything Everywhere All at Once (Q83808444) has Do-CfOPfkUs all those should be finde too - Loominade (talk) 16:02, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Linking youtube videos about the subject?[edit]

I use to think that this property is meant for items that represent films or clips. at leat the examples suggest this. The Proposal discussion mentions audiovisual works as a scope. The description on the other hand, suggests in can be used for trailers. Here it is used on a video game and it links to reviews of that video game (?). @Trade: I think we should use this property only for audiovisual works. What do you think? - Loominade (talk) 15:55, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Trailers and reviews are surely still audiovisual works. A qualifier of object has role (P3831)trailer (Q622550) is what seems to be used for trailers, both for YouTube videos (e.g. Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (Q18486021)) and actual video files from Commons (e.g. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Q103474)). For reviews, described by source (P1343)YouTube video (Q63412991) with qualifier YouTube video ID (P1651) seems appropriate to me. –JustAnotherArchivist (talk) 17:16, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The game's trailer was not avaivable on YouTube so i just added a couple of the most popular gameplays or reviews. I will argue having some reviews / gameplay is better than having nothing at all. @Loominade:--Trade (talk) 17:49, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I agree. But there should be an easy way to distinguish which youtube videos are about the thing and which are the thing. I'd prefer a separate property for reviews or playthroughs 🤷 Loominade (talk) 07:33, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it looks like described by source (P1343)'s constraints explicitly list YouTube video (Q111590499) as a permitted value. I'm not sure I understand the difference to YouTube video (Q63412991) though. –JustAnotherArchivist (talk) 19:14, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding game trailers, what happens for character trailers for hero shooters like Overwatch or character DLC for fighting games? For example, for Tamaki (Q105597756) I added the character's teaser trailer and release date trailer but because video game character isn't a valid type, I'm getting a flag. Jotamide (talk) 17:21, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Strange; I suspect some odd interaction between the many qualifiers. As the flag also mentioned applies to work (P10663) not being a valid qualifier for YouTube video ID (P1651), I tried replacing it with published in (P1433), but while that resolved the second constraint issue, the first one remains.
You can compare it to Calcomp plotter (Q5018853) which I managed to link to an old advertisement of that product line. It works without being flagged, but honestly I don't know why; is it because an advertisement is a work or because a plotter somehow is? If it mattered, I'd regard a video game character a bit more of a work than what a plotter is. In case the presence of the object has role (P3831) qualifier affects the constraint interpretation, it sure isn't described very well where I have looked so far. SM5POR (talk) 10:38, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
With how prevalent character trailers are these days, this property should be able to be used on video game character or fictional character items. Jotamide (talk) 15:54, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Given that the proposal discussion is about audiovisual works, there's no good reason to have human (Q5) and occurrence (Q1190554) as part of allowed types I removed the two. ChristianKl19:50, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

media legend not a valid qualifier[edit]

I wanted to use media legend (P2096) to add a caption to a YouTube video, but was surprised to see it was not a valid qualifier. Is there a recommended alternative, or should it be added to the list? Vicarage (talk) 08:52, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done Added it to the list of valid qualifiers. Mbch331 (talk) 10:33, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can applies to work be added as a valid qualifier?[edit]

Currently, applies to part (P518) is ok but applies to work (P10663) gives a flag. I'm asking for this in the context of a video game character having similar trailers (teaser, gameplay, release date) but for different video games. Jotamide (talk) 16:02, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion this is ok. I added it as an allowed qualifier. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 17:06, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Revision by Swpb[edit]

@User:Swpb Revision

The identifier identifies a YouTube video. The property does not. The property is just a relationship mechanism unique to Wikidata.

It makes sense semantically to only have this statement on the identifier item YouTube video ID (Q110851517). Lectrician1 (talk) 21:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And yes, I know I added the allowed entity datatype but that's because it was before https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Project_chat/Archive/2022/12#Creation_of_items_for_all_external_identifier_identifers was approved. Lectrician1 (talk) 21:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was trying to match where it seemed like you were trying to go with this. In your proposal to deprecate P1629, you pointed to identifies (P10476) as an alternative. That only makes sense if identifies (P10476) can be used on properties, as Wikidata item of this property (P1629) is. If you don't want to use identifies (P10476) that way, that's fine with me, but it leaves me at more of a loss about what you plan to do with Wikidata item of this property (P1629) statements that aren't migratable to class of non-item property value (P10726) (or an item-valued equivalent).
