Help:Modelling/Other domains
See Help:Modelling/Home for notation, intended audience.
The following subsections cover various domains. The intent here is:
- to provide examples of modeling items in these various domains.
- to indicate where to find further discussion of modeling items in these domains.
Religions and ancient religions
[edit]Typical problems, as things currently stand:
- Question but not (in fact, not ), nor
- Question Similarly, , with identical problems
- Question Green Man (Q1460159) has essentially no properties, not even instance of (P31)
- Question druid (Q131081) has no property to tie it to a particular religion or tradition, and we have the statement , but is not a class.

People
[edit]There is a consensus that an individual person has only one instance of (P31) value: human (Q5). While in common parlance we say a person is a politician, female, Norwegian, Muslim, etc., all of these should be expressed by properties such as occupation (P106), sex or gender (P21), country of citizenship (P27), religion or worldview (P140), etc.
Awards, prizes ...
[edit]As of June 2018, this area probably needs improvement in its standards. ArthurPSmith remarks, "I think what's done right now regarding awards is pretty inconsistent/arbitrary. For example Fritz London Award (Q246592) (along with many other cases like this) is both a subclass of and an instance of award! IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award (Q5970360) is a direct subclass of award, but also an instance of a subclass of award, which is also stated to be a metaclass, so that's odd. The value type constraint on award received (P166) allows the value to be an "instance or a subclass". So it would be nice to pick a consistent way to do this that makes sense across all of these cases." If anyone is interested in sorting this out, you might try working with Wikidata:WikiProject Award.
- Example items
-
- Academy Awards (Q19020)
- Turing Award (Q185667)
- Nobel Prize (Q7191)
- Norwegian Nobel Committee (Q946621)
- As of 2018-06-05, Wikidata does not indicate any relation between Norwegian Nobel Committee (Q946621) and Nobel Prize (Q7191).
- Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (Q80061)
-
- 2012 Nobel Peace Prize (Q4626364)
- As of 2018-06-05, we have the somewhat dubious , but Nobel Peace Prize (Q35637) is not a class.
- 2012 Nobel Peace Prize (Q4626364)
- Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (Q47170) is not properly speaking a Nobel Prize, but ⟨ Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (Q47170) ⟩ commemorates (P547) ⟨ Alfred Nobel (Q23810) ⟩
- Alvin Eliot Roth (Q28542) and Lloyd Shapley (Q244739) : 2012 Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (Q47170), represented for the former by:
- Norwegian Nobel Committee (Q946621)
- Academy Awards (Q19020)

Professions and occupations
[edit]See Wikidata:WikiProject Occupations and professions, but as of 2018-06 that project looks a bit stalled out.
- profession (Q28640) is a subclass of occupation (Q12737077)
Education and teaching
[edit]See WikiProject Education (active?)
Organizations
[edit]- field of work (P101) is often useful here, and should be understood broadly (e.g. it can be used for the focus that underlies a voluntary or fraternal organization):
Sports
[edit]There are numerous sport-related WikiProjects, as well as a general Wikidata:WikiProject Sports and Wikidata:WikiProject Sport results:
- Wikidata:WikiProject Athletics

Built environment (buildings and infrastructure)
[edit]Architecture
[edit]Question Is there any relevant and active WikiProject?
While an institution and the building where it is housed are often conflate into a single item, it is often useful to have separate items for the two even when they have the same name, especially if the institution has had more than one location, or the building has had more than one use. For example:
- Seattle Asian Art Museum (institution)
- Seattle Asian Art Museum (building)
- Relation between the two
- with the qualifier
- with the qualifier
- Prior use of the building
- with the qualifiers
Another good example of modeling this sort of thing well: St. Helena Public Library (Q58126363)
Dams and reservoirs
[edit]Dams and reservoirs should be separate items, linked to each other.
Linking the items:
Wikidata talk:WikiProject Energy#Relationship between hydro power station, dam and reservoir has a more complete model discussion for these items. See table at Wikidata:WikiProject Energy/Review-1.
Man made stuff
[edit]- Question how to model prototypes such as Scarab (Q722852)
Mass-produced items
[edit]- Products generally belong to a product model (Q17444171). An item like Nokia 3310 (Q219691) represents a product model. It's a subclass of mobile phone (Q17517); the individual phones would be instances, but unless they are museum exhibits they aren't likely to have their own items in Wikidata. The item is an instance of cell phone model (Q19723444), which is a subclass of product model (Q17444171). (The item cell phone model (Q19723444) is redundant, since we could use product model (Q17444171) directly and it would be apparent from the subclass that it's a mobile phone model.)
- Products are often grouped into product lines / series / families. E.g., the Samsung Galaxy S6 (Q18941713) is a member of Samsung Galaxy S series (Q73389), which represents some related phone models. The family item is an instance of mobile phone series (Q20488450) which is a subclass of model series (Q811701). The model is connected to its family with a part of the series (P179) statement. In this case there are nested product families, and we also have Samsung Galaxy S series (Q73389) part of the series (P179) Samsung Galaxy (Q493064).
- Product life cycle: common occurrences are announcement date (P6949), when a product is officially announced or added to a catalogue or website, date of commercialization (P5204) when its available for sale (shipping date), and discontinued date (P2669) when it's removed from sale.
- Identification of companies and brands: brand (P1716), developer (P178), and manufacturer (P176). In the modern economy, these values can all be different.
