Project status[edit]

Hi all, I've been glad to see that a Wikiproject for Open Government Data exists and so I added my name to the participants list. I wonder what the status of the project is. Is there any exchange, brainstorming, project planning or is it more or less a place where likeminded people add their name?

At opendata.duesseldorf.de we would like to explore how Open Data and Wikidata can benefit from each other and how we could bundle energies for quality issues. If you are at Wikimania, you might be interested in our talk "Open Data Partnerships" (Jens Ohlig, Barbara Fischer, Alice Wiegand) on Friday at 3 pm. Lyzzy (talk) 12:36, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sub page for Canada[edit]

I don't think it scales to many countries listing them like Canada. Perhaps it's better to put that modelling on a sub page? Ainali (talk) 21:32, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I find the idea of moving this information to a subpage and linking it from the main page useful. What is the license of the data described in the Canada section? Depending on the answer, perhaps the subpage Wikidata:WikiProject_Open_Government_Data/OGD_with_compatible_licences could be relevant. Cristina Sarasua (talk) 17:08, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was more thinking Wikidata:WikiProject Open Government Data/Canada and move everything there, similar to how Wikidata:WikiProject every politician have subpages per country. Ainali (talk) 21:29, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great! Cristina Sarasua (talk) 10:15, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! I'll ping Jmackinnon1987, JXB-IM, Ajhurd80, AntarPD, Yifan12345, Longl and LaurelleL too since they have been editing that section as well before moving anything. Ainali (talk) 14:56, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

California DOJ Data[edit]

Howdy! I'd like to add some data from the California state DOJ to Wikidata, partly for better access for folks interested in the data, and partly for an article I'm writing for wikinews. Here is the data as a CSV file. What would folks think of this?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Carolynknights (talk • contribs) at 18:27, 15 July 2020‎ (UTC).[reply]

That is an interesting idea. But as we talked about in the Telegram group, this might be too much data for the individual items and that tabular data on Wikimedia Commons might be better. (Also, the link doesn't work for me.) Ainali (talk) 14:52, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Totally fair! I'll see if I can split the data by year and then upload it to the Wikimedia Commons. Are there any tools that could help me do this automatically (the year splitting)? And yes, the link and the website itself are a bit finicky, that's part of the reason I wanted to upload it to Wikimedia in some capacity. Carolynknights (talk) 20:18, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There's method to this madness: the link will fail to connect when you are accessing it from a non-US connection (IP). Switching the VPN I use to a proxy in the US fixes it. Any other country I tried (Japan/EU/even Canada) fails. Needless to say, this policy is embarrassingly anachronistic. The only comparable case I can think of is my local bank's insistence to shut down their online banking outside of core business hours (Mo-Fr 9am-4pm). Notified participants of WikiProject Open Government Data I just wanted to let you know that User:Abbe98 and I have started WikiProject Govdirectory. It aims to become a global user-friendly directory of government agencies and their online presence, but perhaps the first half of it is most interesting to this project since getting that in a structured form will enable better overview of which government agencies currently exists. If you think that would be useful, have a look and don't be afraid to ask if the project seems unclear in any way. Ainali (talk) 08:23, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
