Notability[edit]

Which session covers establishing notability for created items? Bovlb (talk) 20:19, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The notability of Wikidata items is explained here: Wikidata:Notability. Jane023 (talk) 11:54, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but I'm afraid that wasn't what I asked.
Wikidata has a huge problem with editors who either aren't aware of our notability guidelines or don't realise their importance. This not only means that the good faith efforts of these editors has to be discarded, but it also creates an enormous amount of work for our volunteers. This problem is compounded if we have a training program with the same blindspot. In particular, it appears that the WMF is in the habit of supporting training programs that fail to communicate such foundational issues. This is why I am asking my question about this program.
@Lea Lacroix (WMDE) Do you have an answer for me? Bovlb (talk) 15:53, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Lea Lacroix (WMDE) The ping mechanism seems to be glitching today. Bovlb (talk) 16:00, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Bovlb:, thanks for your question. We will mention notability in the Wikidata introduction, but probably not as in depth as you would like. However, you are very welcome to join the session about patrolling, on Friday 12th, during which we will have more time to talk about notability. Hope to see you around, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 16:14, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to find help for realizing an idea[edit]

Hi,

I wrote down my idea for recommending geographic categories for uncategorized images on commons into a PAWS notebook. Additionally I add some code snippets using wikidata too. How can I find experienced editors helping me out to fix the errors?

The notebook can be found here: https://public-paws.wmcloud.org/User:Mr%20N/CommonsGeoCatRecommender.ipynb

I'm having a little trouble following your code (probably because I don't speak German). Personally I would suggest what I think are different approaches.
  • Take an input coordinate and find items on Wikidata near that coordinate with a tagged Wikipedia commons category using the Wikidata Query Service. Suggest those categories (maybe filtering by number of images in that category)
  • Use the commons query service to find images taken near the given coordinate. Look at the categories of those images and suggest those.
The latter solution doesn't even involve Wikidata really.
As far as finding people, you could look in the telegram/discord. Though for such a commons oriented project I would suggest looking in commons-related spaces. BrokenSegue (talk) 03:17, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your advises. I already tried several approaches. While working on it I got some new ideas. One idea is to show a map with little points for for uncategorized pictures on it.

Type-o Main Page[edit]

There is a type-o on the first paragraph. "basis " should instead be basics. AnnaZZZ (talk) 13:18, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
