New version[edit]

@FelixReimann:, I have created a new version using the wikibase library in Module:Cite/sandbox. I think it does everything this one, and it has better internationalization. One exception is the reflist function. If I understand correctly, this function took a list of items from the "reference" field of a statement. An exception is the it does not add the "ref" tags. I do not think it should be done in this module, as it decreases flexibility (like if we want to provide a bibliography outside the reference section). Note that the |showsource= option of Module:Wikidata calls Module:Cite/sandbox and adds those ref tags.

Can I replace this module with the /sandbox version ? --Zolo (talk) 08:02, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

replaced.  — Felix Reimann (talk) 20:26, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Found items with errors[edit]

  • Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose, The Cactaceae, vol. 2,
  • The Cactaceae. Volume 2 (Q14592529) should use part of (P361) to parse The Cactaceae (Q1388502) and get the missing properties from the parent item. Same for published in (P1433).  — Felix Reimann (talk) 21:44, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2015.1,
  • Missing properties[edit]

    The Cite module should support:

Instead of "page", citeitem() should take a snak object be able to use also the other props of the references besides the stated in (P248).  — Felix Reimann (talk) 05:37, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Module:Cite on English Wikipedia[edit]

What is the relation between wikidata:Module:Cite and enwiki:Module:Cite. If I try {{#invoke:Cite | cite | item=Q21100980 }} on the English Wikipedia it fails with "Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:I18n/linguistic' not found". Are we suppose to copy I18n/linguistic to the English Wikipedia? — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 11:56, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have now copied "I18n/linguistic" to the English Wikipedia. (and now getting a new error) — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 12:07, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Modèle:Bibliographie on frwiki[edit]

The French Wikipedia now has fr:Modèle:Bibliographie to pull reference metadata from Wikidata. Not perfect yet, but good for experimenting in user or project spaces. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:05, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    @Daniel Mietchen: Thanks for the info: Template:Cite Q (Q22321052). --Kolja21 (talk) 23:00, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Work in with existing templates?[edit]

Would it be possible to arrange an invocation method which could be used by the existing citation templates? What I envisage would be that, rather than build a list of (parameter, value) pairs from supplied text, the list would be fetched from Wikidata. This would allow the appropriate format to be applied in context, and adjusted by each project, rather than having one format imposed upon everybody. WikiCite with URLs?[edit]

    Hello:

Is it feasible to use Wikidata for citations used in Wikipedia articles, especially for news items with URLs?

I ask for two primary reasons:

    1. I do not see "url" in Module:Cite#Supported properties.
    2. Module:Cite#See also includes an example with an error: A demo of the module in use at the English Wikipedia.

I plan soon to start drafting a new article for Wikipedia that will cite many and perhaps all of the 22 URLs given below, and I'd be happy to use Wikidata if it's feasible to do so. If yes, can you direct me to a tutorial on how to do this?

FYI, I've made over 4,700 edits to Wikimedia projects since 2010-03-26 but only 2 to Wikidata items -- and another 23 in Wikidata questions. I'm happy to try to become a Wikidata user if I can do so without becoming a Wikidata developer ;-)

    Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 07:03, 18 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's feasible; see en:Template:Cite Q. There is some resistance, though to the use of Wikidata on en.Wikipedia. That said, for the URLS you list there are probably no Wikidata items, so you may do better to use the regular en:Template:Cite web. {{Cite Q}} is more suited to citing papers or books which have Wikidata items.
