Welcome to Wikidata, Micru!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.

Autopatroller[edit]

Hello, Micru! I am just letting you know that I have added the autopatroller flag to your account, as you are a trusted user on Wikidata. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me or leave a message at the project chat. Thanks, Ricordisamoa 22:44, 16 April 2013 (UTC) --Ricordisamoa 22:44, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I propose you to delete all options which are not feasible or not interesting in order to concentrate on those which are really for the RFC.From the discussion there are only 3 options: 1) a Q-S system 2) a Q system with items for the sources and 3) a Q system where sources are defined only in the source section of the item. If you agree I will modify the request. Thank Snipre (talk) 12:34, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have done some clean up, if you think more is needed, go ahead. I think we still have some issues to resolve, but it is more dependent on implementation choices. Like, how should we address different editions (or translations) of the same book. --Micru (talk) 12:53, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Different editions means different ISBN, different publication dates, for some books different editors,... so if we want to integrate that data in reusable way we have to create item for each manifestation of a work used as source in a certain number of statements. The only issue for me is to know what are the problems of creating a new domain S beside the domain Q for items and P for properties. Mixing Q item for a work and Q items for its manifestations is disturbing in my opinion and some people won't be able to do the difference and will add data of a manifestation to the work item if they don't find the appropriate item for a particular manifestation. So edition property will be defined in the item of the manifestation. Only the page property has to be defined in the source section beside the link to the manifestation item in order to allow the resusability of the source item. If these guidelines are applied in a mandatory way it will be easy to extract information from wikidata: all information about the source is defined in the source item describing one manifestation and the page property has to be recovered from the statement section for the source. Snipre (talk) 13:20, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The main problem of having 2 namespaces is that there will be a lot more of items, and that it would be more difficult to maintain, create, update, etc. I am ok having all information in one item if it is possible to address the subsection that represents the edition with a unique identifier. I agree with you that otherwise it makes sense to have the information separated in different items.--Micru (talk) 17:04, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So you give up about the reusability of sources ? We have no choice: we create an item for each source and we increase the total number of items and we can reuse the sources or we keep the number of item low and we forget about the reuse of sources. The question of a new domain S for sources doesn't change anything in case of the first option: if you create several items for different sources it doesn't modify the number of items if you call them QXXX or SXXX. So that is that choice we have to put in the request for comment. And at the end what is the problem ? The management of items or the size of the memory on the servers ? Because if a source is described by 6 properties and I want to use that source for 100 statements, dose it take more memory than one item with 6 properties with 100 links from the statements (I forget about the page property which is the same in both cases). Do you agree to present the choice like that ? Snipre (talk) 17:39, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't give up on source reusability. Even if the sources are integrated into the same item as subsections, they would still be reusable by using the notation "Qxxx->Edition ID->Parameters of that edition (editor, year, etc)" (just an example). The problem is that we cannot guarantee now the uniqueness of the "Edition ID". I left a comment on Denny's talk page about it. I think the developers should decide on which option they think it is better for scalability. I have no idea about how taxing can be each one of the options.--Micru (talk) 17:54, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is the first time I hear that solution: is it feasible with the present structrue or we need to wait on new development ? Snipre (talk) 18:01, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I withdrew my opposition to your proposal Wikidata:Property_proposal/Creative_work#edition_of: you can ask a property creator to create it and we can propose the guidelines for sourcing tomorrow as planed. Snipre (talk) 19:28, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am concerned about your closure of Wikidata:Requests for comment/References and sources. You are clearly involved as the creator and major participant in the RfC. Someone independent should have closed it, and there were no shortage of people to do so either. Please re-open it and have someone else close it. Legoktm (talk) 15:50, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I have now reverted the closure per the above.--Jasper Deng (talk) 21:42, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Demonym[edit]

Hi Micru,

Thanks for your feedback to the proposal I responded to it there. If Wiktionary would provide a solution, I'd withdraw it, but as I don't quite see how, we should probably go ahead with this solution. What do you think? --- Jura 10:13, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is also another proposal on Sister projects. I think it is much easier to wait till there is an implemented solution for Wiktionary, otherwise the job has to be repeated. Also take into account that each town has a demonym, so if an item for each demonym, that would mean millions of new items. And most demonyms also have inflections, variants, etc. --Micru (talk) 10:44, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Would you comment in the thread? Wait for a solution that isn't planned nor scheduled wont solve it. I can't make much sense of the Sister project proposal either. --- Jura 10:47, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just found Wikidata:Development_plan#Not_to_be_done_.28yet.29. It seems that we need to find a solution ourselves. My proposal could be a start. --- Jura 14:12, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It will be done eventually. If there are items about demonyms, then better to link from them with "demonyms of". Usually there is more than one per place, plus declinations, so better to treat that as linguistic data. --Micru (talk) 15:22, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, eventually here means not in the medium term.
I think I addressed the other point. It's already information that is included in Wikipedia, not Wiktionary. --- Jura 15:25, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Work item and edition item[edit]

Hi Micru, I was hoping to chat with you a bit about the work item and edition item distinction for sourcing statements. While I understand the value and need of this distinction, I'm concerned that it proves too much work for contributors wanting to source a statement and thereby poses a barrier to quality data. I am interested in discussing possible workarounds or new workflows to the process of having to first create a work item in Wikidata (assuming a book's not already there), and then another item for the edition or translation of a book. The discussion would not necessarily entail changes to the FRBR model - for example, one idea I had is having a Special page with a form that allows users to create both a work item and edition at once. If you would like to discuss on IRC, I am on #wikidata usually between 16:00 UTC and 23:00 UTC Monday through Friday. Thanks -Thepwnco (talk) 16:30, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Updating Wikidata:Wikisource[edit]

Hello again, I am reaching out because you are one of the few users I'm already familiar with who is involved with Wikisource. I left a message at Wikidata_talk:Wikisource a few days ago about updating the Wikidata documentation for all sister projects but have yet to receive a response. Can you tell me if it would be appropriate to begin updating Wikidata:Wikisource content given that no one has seemingly taken on ownership of the page or objects to the idea of me updating it? Thanks. -Thepwnco (talk) 23:06, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A Thank You[edit]

Hey Micru,

I don't know whether you know this that much but your work is truly appreciated by myself at least with regards to WD:Lounge and the way you communicate with Tamwashi. Just wanted to drop a thank you note to you :) John F. Lewis (talk) 19:35, 27 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

John, thanks for your nice words! I think it is important to realize that it is just a matter of roles, and that no policy can solve that, just proper communication and insight. There is still a lot of work to do understanding the dynamics that are at play here, and I am also interested in knowing your perspective as admin and what users should know about that role. So if you have time to drop by the lounge and leave your comments, I will appreciate it! :)--Micru (talk) 00:22, 28 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Groups[edit]

Hi Micru. I noticed that you claimed group of living things (Q16334298) and your newly created group of works (Q17489659) to be subclasses of group (Q83478). I agree that the old value (class (Q5127848)) may not be good here, but neither is group (Q83478) which in mathematical group theory is a set with an associative binary operation, under which there exists an identity element, and such that each element has an inverse. (Cite from wikt:group#Noun).

I think it would be better to create an item (if one doesn't already exist) to denote any number of objects of some kind. Regards, Dipsacus fullonum (talk) 07:14, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Dipsacus fullonum: sorry the delay in replying, wikimania was happening. I'll take a look to other ontologies to see how they do it, but I agree with you that it would be better to have it independent from the mathematical concept (or at least not directly related as a subclass).--Micru (talk) 12:55, 11 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Dipsacus fullonum: Fixed. I have created a "group of entities" which is a subclass of "entity". What is missing is a property to say <group of entities> has quality <set>. Proposed here: Wikidata:Property_proposal/Generic#has_quality --Micru (talk) 21:37, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Current stats for different types of Commons interwiki links[edit]

Okay, so I can use WDQ [1] with

 CLAIM[31:4167836] AND LINK[commonswiki]

to find that 250907 items which are categories that have sitelinks to Commons, and

 LINK[commonswiki] AND NOCLAIM[31:4167836]

to find that 172065 items which are not categories that have sitelinks to Commons

So is it now possible to now look at each of those two numbers, and ask how many of those links to Commons start :Commons:Category: and how many of them do not ? Jheald (talk) 05:44, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I tried what you suggested, but it didn't work, because (i) Label removes the word "Category:" from categories; and (ii) Label search searches the entire database of different internationalisations of the name, rather than the specific name used for the item on Commons.
Any other ideas? Jheald (talk) 18:02, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jheald: No idea, maybe you could explain to Magnus the kind of search you need to perform, maybe he has some idea about how to do it.--Micru (talk) 18:06, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I understand the question. What is it you want to find out? Wikidata stores the sitelinks, not all links to the Category namespace, so I guess none of them start with :Commons:Category:. Maybe you want Commons category (P373) or Commons gallery (P935)? --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:50, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Creator templates[edit]

Arbitrary access has now been turned on at test.wikipedia.org, so if you were to knock together a prototype

[[Creator:Edward Curtis]]

page there, that could be very interesting; also perhaps an

[[Institution:British Library]]

page.

Yes, the templates will be rapidly made more general; but if we can show proof-of-concept for drop in replacements, that can help understanding.

It also gives us a chance to start encouraging people to migrate the data in those templates to wikidata, with the possibility to check the output (ie round-trip the data).

I posted a long piece last night to the GLAM mass-uploading list, about what they/we can start doing now to help the upcoming Structured Data initiative for Commons, especially the data modelling.

A lot of it will turn on what can/should be stored on central Wikidata (chiefly information relating to lots of files), and what should not (chiefly information specific to particular files), with a borderline driven by Wikidata:Notability. I'd be very grateful if you could give it a read-over, and tell me if I have got the Wikidata community perspective right, and if there is anything else that ought to be added.

It's the message "Thinking about Stuctured Data on Commons", currently at the top of the glamtools list. The bit about data modelling really kicks in at the end.

Thanks, Jheald (talk) 14:39, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PS. Let's keep replies here, to make the thread easier to follow, but give me a ping to let me know to come and have a look. Best, Jheald (talk) 14:41, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Correction: it is www.wikidata.org that will be getting arbitrary access.
It is live now on test.wikidata.org , will go live here on Tuesday.
Do you think it would be worth setting up a wikiproject here, Wikidata:WikiProject Structured Data for Commons and then start creating tests in subpages like
Wikidata:WikiProject Structured Data for Commons/test/Creator:Edward Curtis
Wikidata:WikiProject Structured Data for Commons/test/Institution:British Library
what would also be nice would be a template to let us test how to display a set of "topics", each topic being a Q-number, with options eg just to display a count of them; or to display a list of their names; or a list of the topic names with mini-descriptions. Jheald (talk) 18:25, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jheald: Thanks for posting the long and enlightening email. I think that communication is very necessary to explain well the challenges. Migration will not happen overnight, and it is expected that the community needs time to gradually adjust to the new paradigm. On Wikisource we are still in transition, learning about how to make the most of Wikidata and figuring out the most convenient structures to store bibliographic information. In retrospective I consider that the slow deployment has played to our advantadge, since it allowed us more time to think and understand the implications, so be glad that it is going to take some months :)
I tried to use the inclusion templates on test.wikidata.org but somehow it was not working as I was expecting. In any case I must advise that the best would be that some template creator from Commons would take care of it. In the end the Commons templates will be maintained by Commoners, so better to have them involved from early on in the prototyping and testing.
It is a brilliant idea to start the wikiproject, because some of the metadata (about the object being depicted) will have to be stored here. You can import that data already, start discussing the properties that will be needed for Commons, or think about the always needed notability criteria.
Regarding editing interfaces, my recommendation is that you check this out. The most interesting perhaps is the WE-Framework which already works very well on any wikipedia.--Micru (talk) 22:58, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Do we need anyone's permission to start the WikiProject, or do we just create the page? Jheald (talk) 23:00, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jheald: No permission needed! Just go ahead and post it on the project chat so others can join :) You can take this one as an example.--Micru (talk) 23:09, 16 August 2014 (UTC)--Micru (talk) 23:09, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've gone ahead and made a draft page: Wikidata:WikiProject Structured Data for Commons. Feel free to add to and change it. I'll restyle it to look more like the Source Metadata page. Jheald (talk) 06:59, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Quick and dirty logo added. What do you think? Jheald (talk) 07:39, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Announce now live at Project Chat. Jheald (talk) 08:05, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jheald: Great! I made the center of the logo a circle, which I think is more visually appealing.--Micru (talk) 08:25, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good. It's nice to have both, I think. I'll make them "other versions" of each other. Jheald (talk) 08:30, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. *Really* like the round logo. I have to be AFK now, but I'll have a look at the infoboxes when I can. Agree that the work of WikiProject books will be very useful -- we may be going to be thinking about how to present eg a photograph of a picture of a place or a mythological scene -- different levels of subjects and dates to untangle, and think how best to put over in a filepage description through a template. Jheald (talk) 08:48, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pregunta/duda[edit]

Hola, Micru.

Labels for Chopin's piano concertos[edit]

I'm pretty sure we should just keep these as "Piano Concerto No. n". "and Orchestra" is almost always redundant unless specifically specified by the composer, for which I don't see evidence of here.--Jasper Deng (talk) 20:59, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jasper Deng: I am taking the labels from MusicBrainz. If you prefer the labels from IMSLP, I don't mind using them, but I would prefer to follow some standard criteria.--Micru (talk) 22:45, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I think the IMSLP names are more common; I get this impression when browsing YouTube for videos of the music. Perhaps we should bring this up at a relevant task force/wikiproject?--Jasper Deng (talk) 22:17, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Progress on the Commons Creator template[edit]

Early days yet (and huge thanks to User:Zolo for getting me this far), but take a look at User:Jheald/test/Creator:Edward Curtis and see what you think. (See also the talk page for some issues remaining). Jheald (talk) 23:02, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Authority Control[edit]

For {{Creator/wrapper}} and {{Institution/wrapper}}, how should we include which Authority Control identifiers to include? (Or should we include every identifier we can find -- it's usually in a collapse box, after all).

Is there any template that already exists, that extracts and lists all the values of all the properties in this class available for an item? Jheald (talk) 10:57, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Structured Data Bee, vol. 1, issue 1[edit]

Greetings, thank you for signing up for the Structured Data newsletter and its first edition. With this newsletter, the Structured data team plans on keeping you informed of technical progress, events, and communications to talk about the project, and continued information on how you can participate. This newsletter will be sent approximately every two weeks, and future editions will be translatable prior to publication. If you're new to Wikidata and want more information about how it works in relation to Wikimedia Commons, you can read an introduction to Wikidata for Commons being drafted.

Tech and design[edit]

  • The software development for this process is still in the planning phases. The idea is to have some functional prototyping done for experimentation and feedback by the end of the year.
  • The initial roadmap for development has been posted on Commons. The roadmap is a rough outline and is open to iterations as the team learns where and when to focus its energies.
  • There is a page set up for design ideas about what structured data could potentially look like.
  • There are forthcoming requests for comment about the particulars of technical architecture on mediawiki.org. Keep an eye on the commons:Commons:Structured data/Get involved page for notification of when the RfCs are posted.

Events and chats[edit]

  • There was a week-long meeting between the Wikimedia Foundation's Multimedia team, the Wikidata team, and community members, held in Berlin, Germany, at the office of Wikimedia Deutchland on October 6-10. You can read an overview of the event in on this page on Commons. There are also plenty of pictures available on Wikimedia Commons.
  • If you would like to read more detail about what was discussed, there are etherpads of notes taken for each day of the event.
  • The second IRC office hour (logs) was held on October 16, and the first (logs) on September 3.

Getting involved[edit]

  • You've signed up for the newsletter. That's a great first step!
  • While working prototypes are being developed, there is a drive to make all files contain machine-readable data on Wikimedia projects.
  • A hub has been launched to facilitate communication and documentation for this work.
  • There is a frequently-asked questions page that is finishing drafting and will need translated. Keep an eye out for when it is ready if you are interested in translating.
  • There will be active organization of the Get involved page as community participation is further organized. There will be work groups, similar to specific Wikiprojects, dedicated to particular aspects of structured data like licensing presentation, design, API performance, and even helping out with this newsletter and other community communications.

There will be much more information and activities around the proposal to develop structured data on Wikimedia Commons. This project is a major undertaking and an important step as the chief provider, repository, and curator of media for Wikimedia projects.

Thank you for your participation in such an extensive project, let me know if you're interested in participating in this newsletter. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 04:43, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

TitleByItem[edit]

Hola Micru! Some time ago, I created User:Ricordisamoa/TitleByItem.js as a workaround in regards to this request by you. Since then, phab:T66776 has been fixed, so Special:GoToLinkedPage can be used instead. User:Micru/common.js should be edited to avoid invoking the old script. I can do that for you if you want. Come back soon! --Ricordisamoa 12:35, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Ricordisamoa: Thanks a lot for keeping track of this! I am coming back to the wiki world :) --Micru (talk) 10:17, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data on Commons update[edit]

Greetings,

After a delay in updates to the Structured data on Commons project, I wanted to catch you up with what has been going on over the past three months. In short: The project is on hold, but that doesn't mean nothing is happening.

The meeting in Berlin in October provided the engineering teams with a lot to start on. Unfortunately the Structured Data on Commons project was put on hold not too long after this meeting. Development of the actual Structured data system for Commons will not begin until more resources can be allocated to it.

The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Germany have been working to improve the Wikidata query process on the back-end. This is designed to be a production-grade replacement of WikidataQuery integrated with search. The full project is described at Mediawiki.org.This will benefit the structured data project greatly since developing a high-level search for Commons is a desired goal of this project.

The Wikidata development team is working on the arbitrary access feature. Currently it's only possible to access items that are connected to the current page. So for example on Vincent van Gogh you can access the statements on Q5582, but you can't access these statements on Category:Vincent van Gogh or Creator:Vincent van Gogh. With arbitrary access enabled on Commons we no longer have this limitation. This opens up the possibility to use Wikidata data on Creator, Institution, Authority control and other templates instead of duplicating the data (what we do now). This will greatly enhance the usefulness of Wikidata for Commons.

To use the full potential of arbitrary access the Commons community needs to reimplement several templates in LUA. In LUA it's possible to use the local fields and fallback to Wikidata if it's not locally available. Help with this conversion is greatly appreciated. The different tasks are tracked in phabricator, see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89594 .

Volunteers are continuing to add data about artworks to Wikidata. Sometimes an institution website is used and sometimes data is being transfered from Commons to Wikidata. Wikidata now has almost 35.000 items about paintings. This is done as part of the WikiProject sum of all paintings. This helps us to learn how to d:Wikidata:WikiProject Visual arts/Item structuremodel and refine metadata about artworks. Experience that will of course be very useful for Commons too.

Additionally, the metadata cleanup drive continues to produce results. The drive, which is intended to identify files missing {{Information}} or the like structured data fields and to add such fields when absent, has reduced the number of files missing information by almost 100,000 on Commons. You can help by looking for files with similarly-formatted description pages, and listing them at Commons:Bots/Work requests so that a bot can add the {{Information}} template on them.

At the Amsterdam Hackathon in November 2014, a couple of different models were developed about how artwork can be viewed on the web using structured data from Wikidata. You can browse two examples here and here. These examples can give you an idea of the kind of data that file pages have the potential to display on-wiki in the future.

The Structured Data project is a long-term one, and the volunteers and staff will continue working together to provide the structure and support in the back-end toward front-end development. There are still many things to do to help advance the project, and I hope to have more news for you in the near future. Contact me any time with questions, comments, concerns.

autores.uy database id[edit]

Hi Micru, first of all, thanks for that!. It will fill a empty space of many many uruguayan authors. I was wondering how can i do to import the identifiers from autores.uy to wikidata (there are thousands of authors there and doing it 'by hand' would be a real pain). In a more general question, how can i do to import not only the identifiers of the authors that already exists in wikidata, but to import every author in that database? Can i acomplish that using bots?. Thanks!--Zeroth (talk) 23:37, 28 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ajuda[edit]

Salut !--Amadalvarez (talk) 04:59, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New here, thanking you for the welcome[edit]

Dear Micru, thank you for the welcome message on my User talk page. I've been editing Wikipedia (mainly in English) since mid-2006, last year started on the Commons (identifying photo content and Categorizing accordingly), and now am discovering how I can help here in Wikidata. I'm a polyglot, use or am acquiring several non-roman alphabets, and worked professionally as a translator and content editor in a historical archives before my recent retirement. As I've lived half my life (three decades each) in the USA and Israel, my strongest language pair is Hebrew>English and I can do a lot of data cleanup and expansion between them. I'm sincerely devoted to Wikipedia's goals and view data management as a means of accessing information that builds knowledge - for others even more than for myself. Your guidance is appreciated! - Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 19:02, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unused property[edit]

This is a kind reminder that the following property was created more than six months ago: DPLA ID (P760). As of today, this property is used on less than five items. As the proposer of this property you probably want to change the unfortunate situation by adding a few statements to items. --Pasleim (talk) 19:21, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Micru, is there some urgency with (not doing) this request? I wonder why it wasn't left for 7 days. Especially as we do have some backlog.
--- Jura 20:41, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jura1: This proposal had enough feedback to reach a consensus (for not creation) rapidly, and without any doubts. Why would you like to keep it open longer?--Micru (talk) 20:48, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Clearly the initial feedback was inadequate, or, at least, none contradicted Pasleim's rebuttal. So, it clearly needs a better solution to emerge.
--- Jura 20:51, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Can you undo the closure or shall I do it for you?
--- Jura 21:13, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data on Commons Newsletter, July 19, 2017[edit]

Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!

Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons?[edit]

The millions of files on Wikimedia Commons are described with a lot of information or (meta)data. With the project Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons, this data is structured more, and is made machine-readable. This will make it easier to view, search (also multilingually), edit, organize and re-use the files on Commons.

In early 2017, the Sloan Foundation funded this project (see documentation). Development takes place in 2017–2020. It involves staff from the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) and many volunteers. To achieve this, Wikibase support is added to Wikimedia Commons. Wikibase is the technology that is also used for Wikidata.

Recent developments: groundwork[edit]

  • A new and crucial technical step (federation) now makes it possible to reference data from one Wikibase website in another. Because of this, it will be possible to use Wikidata's items and properties to describe media files on Commons.
  • Another important piece of groundwork is under development: so-called Multi-Content Revisions. This feature allows structured data to be stored alongside wiki text, so that one wiki page can contain several types of content.

Team updates[edit]

  • Amanda Bittaker was hired as Program Manager for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. Amanda will take care of the overall management of the project.
  • Sandra Fauconnier (known as Spinster in her volunteer capacity) is the new Community Liaison. She will support the collaboration between the communities (Commons, Wikidata, GLAM) and the product development teams at the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland.
  • We have open positions for a UX designer and a Product Manager!

Talking with communities and allies[edit]

  • Long-term feedback from GLAMs. Besides the Wikimedia community, many external cultural and knowledge institutions (GLAMs - Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) are interested in Structured Data on Commons and are willing to provide feedback on the long-term plans for the project. Alex Stinson, GLAM strategist at the Wikimedia Foundation, is currently in contact with Europeana, DPLA, the Smithsonian and the National Archives of the United States. Alex is also looking for other GLAM institutions who might be able to advise on the long term. If you know of an institution or partner that may be appropriate for consultation, do get in touch with Alex.
  • Jonathan Morgan, design researcher, is starting to work on two projects:

What comes next?[edit]

  • The Structured Data on Commons team meets in the week after Wikimania to lay the groundwork for the next steps. This includes new backend development and design work, for better and more clear integration of the structured data in pages on Wikimedia Commons.
  • The project's information pages on Wikimedia Commons will receive a long overdue update in the upcoming months. The team will also work on more and better communication channels. Feedback, wishes and tips are welcome at the project's general talk page.

  • At this moment, there is also an online survey for GLAM staff, Wikimedians in Residence, and GLAM volunteers who upload media collections to Wikimedia Commons. The results will be used to understand how we can improve this experience. (phabricator task T175188)
  • Upcoming: interviews with Wikimedia volunteers who curate media on Commons (including tool developers), talking about activities and workflows. (phabricator task T175185)
Development

In Autumn 2017, the Structured Commons development team works on the following major tasks (see also the quarterly goals for the team):

  • Getting Multi-Content Revisions sufficiently ready, so that the Multimedia and Search Platform teams can start using it to test and prototype things.
  • Determine metrics and metrics baseline for Commons (phabricator task T174519).
  • The multimedia team at WMF is gaining expertise in Wikibase, and unblocking further development for Structured Commons, by completing the MediaInfo extension for Wikibase.
Stay up to date!

Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
Research
  • Research findings from interviews and surveys of GLAM project participants are being published to the research page. Check back over the next few weeks as additional details (notes, quotes, charts, blog posts, and slide decks) will be added to or linked from that page.
Development
  • The Structured Commons team has written and submitted a report about the first nine months of work on the project to its funders, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The 53-page report, published on November 1, is available on Wikimedia Commons.
  • The team has started working on designs for changes to the upload wizard (T182019).
  • We started preliminary work to prototype changes for file info pages.
  • Work on the MediaInfo extension is ongoing (T176012).
  • The team is continuing its work on baseline metrics on Commons, in order to be able to measure the effectiveness of structured data on Commons. (T174519)
  • Upcoming: in the first half of 2018, the first prototypes and design sketches for file pages, the UploadWizard, and for search will be published for discussion and feedback!
Stay up to date!
