New section with "popular" items

I'd like to suggest a new section on the main page, similar in spirit to the recent events section on many language Wikipedias - but instead of an actual, manually written recent event section, this is a list of the 3-5 top items, and a picture linked from those items, based on something like the Wikipedia Live Monitor (see on Twitter). My suggestion would be a bot that all 3-24 hours edits a template, and the template can then also be manually changed in case something embarrassing pops up, and the template is then transcluded on the Main page.

Any thoughts? --Denny (talk) 21:08, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

I really like this idea. To show how it could look like a queried the recent changes table for the most edited items during the last 24h and applied a couple of filters (bot=0, patrolled=1, new length > old_length, distinct users > 3) and got the following items: Jean-Pierre Coffe (Q3169145), EgyptAir Flight 181 (Q23651626), Roger Cicero (Q58760), Patty Duke (Q232538), 2016 Lahore suicide bombing (Q23638613) --Pasleim (talk) 09:46, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Not too bad actually! There is also https://grafana.wikimedia.org/dashboard/db/wikidata-top-page-views which might or might not be useful. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:06, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
And I've opened phabricator:T131240 to get us a dashboard for the most edited items as well. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:15, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Support - but who's going to implement it? :) ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:37, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

I run the above mentioned query for the last few days and got the following results:

If the results are okay I could implement it on the main page. --Pasleim (talk) 09:01, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the Query, @Pasleim:! That looks great. I was wondering if this is based solely on the local recent changes, or on the recent changes of all connected Wikimedia-pages? I think the latter would be more robust and potentially interesting, whereas the former is easier to implement, and could be a good start. --Denny (talk) 18:02, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
It's solely based on changes made on Wikidata, i.e. Special:RecentChanges --Pasleim (talk) 09:35, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
@Pasleim: Those look pretty decent to me and there doesn't seem to be any major objections so I'd say let's go ahead? --LydiaPintscher (talk) 10:23, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): done:) --Pasleim (talk) 19:16, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
Yaaaay :) Thank you! --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 19:46, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

Odd formatting of image in Popular items section

Hi

I'm using a fairly large screen and the image from the popular items (today Sadiq Khan) section is running over the top of the Discover banner.

Thanks

Better now? I removed from each line. @Sjoerddebruin: What was the intention to add it? Is it okay to add it only after the last line?--Pasleim (talk) 09:49, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
My intention was to put it after the last line, to keep the image inside the box. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:50, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi both, yes this has fixed it, it now stays within the box whatever width I put the screen at, thanks John Cummings (talk) 10:16, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Problem with the French term "Film live"

The French Wikipedia article Film live must be removed from the Wikidata Q517386 item, and replaced with the article Prise de vue réelle.

This is because, in French, prise de vue réelle is the term for the traditional technique of shooting films, that is, "live action" in English. In French, film live is just a modern term referring to those films (and only films) that are shot in live action. As a conclusion: prise de vue réelle is the only French equivalent of the English "live action", the Spanish imagen real and so on.

How can this be done ? I was trying to delete "Film live" from the Q517386 item, but I only obtain a "forbidden" message...

This can be done by replacing that sitelink with the new title. ✓ Done for you. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:01, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
