Key items[edit]

The Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage[edit]

The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (Q5166256) is a UNESCO treaty adopted by the UNESCO General Conference on 17 October 2003 for "ensuring the viability of the intangible cultural heritage, including the identification, documentation, research, preservation, protection, promotion, enhancement, transmission, particularly through formal and non-formal education, as well as the revitalization of the various aspects of such heritage." The convention text can be retrieved in dozens of languages for proper translations.[1]

Intangible cultural heritage[edit]

The items intangible cultural heritage (Q59544) and Intangible Cultural Heritage (Q84036549) are used differently from one another. Suggest to consider removing Intangible Cultural Heritage (Q84036549) after exploring how it is used, replacing with a more accurate item or just changing the label and describing the item better.

UNESCO introduces intangible cultural heritage (Q59544) in the following way:[1]

The “intangible cultural heritage” means the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity. For the purposes of this Convention, consideration will be given solely to such intangible cultural heritage as is compatible with existing international human rights instruments, as well as with the requirements of mutual respect among communities, groups and individuals, and of sustainable development.

The item Intangible Cultural Heritage (Q84036549) is used as a value for cultural heritage designation. The practice should be deprecated, and the individual lists should be used as value for the designation. See item structures on the next tab.

Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage and of the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices[edit]

Each year nominations are made to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists (Q4435332) by the States Parties to the 2003 Convention to evaluate whether or not to inscribe those cultural practices and expressions of intangible heritage on the Convention’s Lists.[2] Individual heritage items are inscribed on one of the lists.

UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists (Q4435332) has part(s) (P527):

  1. Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (Q110319947) – The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is made up of those intangible heritage elements that help demonstrate the diversity of this heritage and raise awareness about its importance. (RL)
  2. list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding (Q17323370) – The List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding is composed of intangible heritage elements that concerned communities and States Parties consider require urgent measures to keep them alive. Inscriptions on this List help to mobilize international cooperation and assistance for stakeholders to undertake appropriate safeguarding measures. (USL)
  3. Register of Good Safeguarding Practices (Q17325849) – The Register of Good Safeguarding Practices contains programs, projects and activities that best reflect the principles and the objectives of the Convention. (BSP)

In reverse, the lists are part of (P361) UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists (Q4435332).

Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (Q877988) is a precursor to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists (Q4435332).

Tasks[edit]

  • Wikipedia articles as well as Wikidata items link to all of the above interchangeably. They should be streamlined.
  • The item structure between these must be sorted out and maintained.

Domains of the UNESCO Intangible Heritage Convention[edit]

All items on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists (Q4435332) as well as instances of national inventory of intangible cultural heritage (Q113040113) follow the same classification system The items are divided into 5 categories. Join the discussion about how to use them in the heritage entries on the modeling discussion page!
