Motivation[edit]

MobyGames game ID (former scheme) (P1933) was created back in 2015 (proposal). This property was not using the numeric ID, but a URL slug, which had the drawback of not being fully stable, but was prominently exposed in the URL and also what was used in the Wikipedia templates. A numeric ID did exist, accessible through the API, but not (as far as I know) exposed anywhere in the UI ; I am not sure it was resolvable either (but don’t quote me on that).

End of February 2023, MobyGames launched their new version. Among many other things, the numeric IDs are exposed in both the URL and the UI. MobyGames had the good taste to set-up permanent redirects so our links are not broken ; but going forward we should use the numeric ID.

The plan, as discussed on the project’s talk page, is to create a new property, using a bot to populate it (based on the old property), and eventually deprecate the old property. Jean-Fred (talk) 17:07, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
