Motivation[edit]
The Gardens of the Roman Empire (Q106595983) (GRE) project "aims to bring knowledge of Roman garden archaeology out of local archaeological journals and print books into a free open access resource in a consistent format that provides scholars, students, and professionals global access to evidence of all types for ancient garden culture."
It will make available academic research including up-to-date descriptions, plans, stratigraphic sections, bibliography, and photographs of gardens known archaeologically.
The GRE project is actively linking with other identifiers like Pleiades ID, TGN ID and ORCID. These should help us rapidly match a subset for which we have those IDs, and in other cases will allow Wikidata entries to be better linked e.g. the Herod's Palace example above currently has only a Google knowledge graph ID, but the GRE project knows its Pleiades and TGN identifiers also, in addition to its detailed scholarly summation about the site.
