Instances of human[edit]

Hallo Jakec/Archive 2,

I've raised a Request for Comment for the issue involving the items Q14896454, Q14914342 and Q14870023. As you were involved in one of the Requests for deletions I wanted to point you to it.

Question[edit]

Hello, how can I include coordinates from wikidata in Wikipedia. If I write {{#property:p625}} in the source code, the two values appear, but I'd like to have the value for the nort-south and the east-west coordinate separately. I cannot find information about this anywhere. Regards --62.158.248.188 15:29, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that would be possible unless there is a separate property for north-south ad east-west coordinates :-(. --Jakob (Scream about the things I've broken) 15:32, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This may be a good candidate for WD:Paper cuts or WD:Contact the development team. --Izno (talk) 03:01, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question on deletion of Q15273519[edit]

Hi there,

I'm brand-new to Wikidata and set out to create a page for Stephen Gray, Filmmaker as there are many other Stephen Grays listed on Wikipedia and in search, some have come across the wrong Stephen. I wasn't sure exactly what I had done incorrect in creating Q15273519 (find it later erased). I tried following the instructions after creating a new item. Can you point me in the right direction?

I appreciate it!  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stephengray (talk • contribs).

Hi. The purpose of Wikidata items is to hold links to existing Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, and Commons articles on the subject, or in some cases, to be used as data for other items (more on this at Wikidata:Notability). Q15273519 neither linked to a Wikipedia article on Stephen Gray, nor was linked to from other items. To put it simply, the Wikipedia article on a subject has to exist before the item is created. Now since the subject appears to be you, this means that it would be best to leave the creation of the article to others, as many Wikipedias frown upon creating autobiographies. However, if you really want to create the article yourself and your primary language is English (I'm just assuming it is), a good place to work on the article would be at w:Wikipedia:Articles for creation. --Jakob (Scream about the things I've broken) 22:31, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikidata:Notability actually says something else: That an item is acceptable if ”it refers to an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity.” Has there been further discussions around this, that are not documented there? I am new to WikiData, so I'm not sure about how the processes here, but I have a similar question around this deletion of Q15271584, that described an entity different from Q33788, but with no Wikipedia article. Rotsee (talk) 15:04, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
True, criterion 2 does say that. But many things are a "clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity" (for instance me ;-) but aren't notable. The Notability policy also says "can be described using serious and publicly available references". I'm guessing maybe the colony can be described by such sources, but I can't find any for sure. I'd restore if you could point me to such a source.
As for the Stephen Gray item, I was trying to explain the policy simply for a newbie. Either way, I cannot seem to find significant sources on him (though it is hard to tell as it is a common name and there are a lot of false positives). --Jakob (talk) 17:59, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, you are right about notability, of course (and I agree about Stephen Gray), I just ment to say that “the Wikipedia article on a subject has to exist before the item is created” is a bit misleading.
When it comes to documented, former nations I would argue that they are always notable, though this is probably not the place for such a discussion. As for the French colony of New Caledonia, see e.g. New Caledonia Or Kanaky?: The Political History of a French Colony France's Overseas Frontier, New Caledonia Country Study Guide, to take a few of the first hits from Google Books. Another option, I guess, would be to broaden the scope of the current item, to cover New Caledonia from colonization until now (e.g. not only the current, overseas territory). That's how enwp currently does it. Rotsee (talk) 19:18, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

IP blocks and Emails[edit]

Hi Jakob,

I've noticed you have been disabling email for a few IP blocks. Firstly, it is always bad practise to immediately revoke email access unless it has been abuses and also IPs as-is are unable to send emails either way. Just an observation I have made about you. John F. Lewis (talk) 22:03, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems I checked the revoke email box by mistake. I've put back email access for that IP. Thanks for letting me know.--Jakob (Scream about the things I've broken) 22:19, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Item Q15550141: Stratosphere[edit]

Hi, today, you deleted an item I created. There are multiple files related to Stratosphere in wiki commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stratosphere_logo.svg) There is a wikipedia article describing the programming model of stratosphere: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallelization_contract And we are currently preparing a wikipedia article about stratosphere itself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Waury/sandbox There are multiple (accepted) scientific publications about stratosphere available: http://scholar.google.de/scholar?q=Stratosphere+pact+nephele&btnG=&hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5 https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q15550141&action=history&redlink=1

Are these arguments enough to convince you of the notability of Stratosphere? If not, is there a way to keep the information I added to Wikidata until we published the wikipedia article about Stratosphere so that I don't have to redo the work here? I don't see a reason to delete the item because the information does not hurt anybody. It is not wrong and helps the Wikidata project to grow (Actually, this was the first item I create here and I like your project.) --Rmetzger (talk) 19:38, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

P1244[edit]

Hi Jakob,

Maybe you'd seen my comment at Wikidata:Property_proposal/Sister_projects#P1244.

I guess URL would be the ideal solution, but it isn't functional. In the meantime, I wonder if we would want to create it as a string. Currently nothing can be done with the property. --- Jura 08:34, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. I asked a few contributors who might be interested in the topic to comment. Looks like the non-issue about the print version got the discussion off track. --- Jura 10:33, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Now there is an additional supporter. (sorry for commenting here). --- Jura 07:30, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Q15980262[edit]

Hello Jakec,
why do you think an album of Mitch Winehouse does not meet the notability policy? It has been a regular release, thus criteria #2 "It refers to an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity." is clearly fulfilled. -- Pütz M. (talk) 01:24, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
