This property shows the number of episodes a television or radio series has had. It should always be a numerical value, without other symbols or indications. It's possible to add qualifiers, such as point in time, or references.
Programs in production
[edit]If the program is still in production, ideally you should not update the property until the broadcast premiere of a new episode.
The number of episode should be qualified:
- with point in time (P585) to indicate when a given number is correct.
- with criterion used (P1013) to indicate what this refers to. Values can be:
The date for number of episodes aired (Q39242248) shouldn't be in the future.
Using number of episodes at the end of the current season or of the last season aired (Q39239591) has the advantage that updates need be done only once per season.
If there are several values for the same criterion used (P1013), the most recent one should get preferred rank.
Programs that ended
[edit]In general, only the total number of episodes is stored.
If there are several ways of counting this, in rare cases, there may be multiple values. Add a qualifier to indicate how it is determined.
In general, attempt to follow the way the producer counts the number of episodes. Bear in mind the difference between two-part episode (Q21664088) and segment of a television episode (Q29555881).
Items for episodes
[edit]Items for individual episodes can include further details.

Aired/produced
[edit]For TV series, the property is usually used to indicate the number of episodes aired. We'd need a way to list the number of episodes produced (when the series is cancelled before all produced episodes are aired, and the remaining episodes were never aired or published in any other way). – Máté (talk) 14:05, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Usage instructions
[edit]Hello everyone. I created the help page for this property ("Explanations" section above) trying to reflect one of the most common current usage in wikidata and comparable policies about television infoboxes in local editions of Wikipedia. I'm not sure if it's clear enough and we should also add a note on the aired vs produced topic proposed above by Máté. Also, I'm not sure what's the best qualifier/way to differentiate values in such cases. I'm going to notify about this discussion local projects that use the property and some of the main editions of wikipedia. --Supernino (talk) 06:43, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- See Property_talk:P2437#Usage_instructions. Preferred rank can be used for the current value. "criterion used" can be used to qualify the number.
--- Jura 08:01, 9 September 2017 (UTC)- @Jura1: "criterion used" would be good, but only allows items (!) Is there an equivalent to add a note? --Supernino (talk) 07:10, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- You can add the note to a new item and then add it ;)
--- Jura 07:13, 10 September 2017 (UTC)- @Jura1: Uhm.... An example please? --Supernino (talk) 07:29, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- Q13365715#P1889. Obviously, these can be worded more or less abstract.
--- Jura 07:32, 10 September 2017 (UTC)- Ok then, I've updated the help page :) --Supernino (talk) 12:19, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

How to count Two-Part-Episodes?
[edit]How to count two-part-episodes? Example Encounter at Farpoint (Q3239271) has been broadcasted as a single pilot originally in the US. In other countries and re-runs it was split in two episodes:
They have different production numbers and in German, these two have different Titles and of course, separate broadcast dates. So should Star Trek: The Next Generation, season 1 (Q978153) have 25
or 26
number of episodes (P1113)? --Loominade (talk) 12:46, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
Bounds
[edit]Given the problems we encounter sometimes to calculate the number of episodes (sample), I think bounds should be possible by default, i.e. the "no bounds" constraint shouldn't be added.
--- Jura 09:57, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
- That’s not a use case for bounds. If sources report different values, you need to add multiple claims and work with ranks, rather than applying bounds to a single value. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:01, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
- If sources report an approximate value, this works just fine with bounds. I do think +-0 when present could be removed.

Apple is a good source of counts
[edit]If a podcast is in Apples DB, the count is available from their API, I have using this to try and fill in some of the gaps
This would produce a list of 100 where no count has been added
SELECT DISTINCT ?item ?itemLabel WHERE {
SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE]". } { SELECT DISTINCT ?item WHERE { ?item p:P31 ?statement0. ?statement0 (ps:P31/(wdt:P279*)) wd:Q24634210. ?item p:P5842 ?statement1. ?statement1 (ps:P5842) _:anyValueP5842. MINUS { ?item p:P1113 ?statement2. ?statement2 (psv:P1113/wikibase:quantityAmount) ?numericQuantity. } } LIMIT 100 }
}
