'Or fictional universe
[edit]I have added "or fictional universe" when the character is present in a whole folklore or fictional world. --Zolo (talk) 07:54, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed; I've been linking a bunch of pages to pages like "Buffyverse" and "Tolkien's legendarium". I've added some examples of fictional universes to the property documentation. --Arctic.gnome (talk) 17:32, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
Suggest rename to 'story cycle'
[edit]I'd suggest a rename of the label to 'story cycle', as this property is also used for mythology and legends, and in some cases in a clearly religious context. It would be good to have a label that is inclusive of all of these uses, unlike 'from fictional universe'.--Pharos (talk) 22:17, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
- I changed the name to "from narrative universe" - I think this is more inclusive to mythology and legends. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 13:50, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
Fictional location?
[edit]Shouldn't a similar property exist for items in non-universe sized fictional areas, such as fictional island (Q6619693)s? WT79 The Engineer (talk) 15:21, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
- @WT79 The Engineer: For areas you can use the usual geographical properties like located in/on physical feature (P706), located in the administrative territorial entity (P131), etc. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 09:32, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Valentina.Anitnelav: Yes these properties do exist, but there are no similar fictional or mythical analog of (P1074)s of these. Fictional features like Sodor (Q3299764) are not administrative territorial entity (Q56061)s, as they cannot perform any administrative actions, outside of fiction. WT79 The Engineer (talk) 10:24, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- These properties are also allowed for fictional places and fictional administrative entities (see property constraints, e.g. Property:P706#P2302)). Fictional entities are kept distinct from real entities by making them an instance of any subclass of fictional entity (Q14897293). So you can filter out all fictional entities from queries. Besides that, normal properties can be used on those (see also Wikidata:WikiProject_Fictional_universes and Wikidata:WikiProject_Narration). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 10:53, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

inclusion of mythology
[edit]What's the current thinking on this? I notice it's still an alias, but some items use worshipped by (P1049) which can work for deities, e.g. Hera (Q38012), but which seems less obvious for other characters, e.g. Diomedes of Thrace (Q393186). Many also use part of (P361).
Current counts for some properties with Greek mythology (Q34726) as value:
- 618 part of (P361)
- 109 worshipped by (P1049)
- 70 from narrative universe (P1080)
- 4 facet of (P1269)
- 3 religion or worldview (P140)
- 2 present in work (P1441)
Query is at [1]. I probably added some or many of any of these myself and some uses might not be directly relevant to the question at hand.
I don't think P361 is that useful in the context. I'd tend to use from narrative universe (P1080) or create a new one.--- Jura 22:31, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Valentina.Anitnelav: as you changed the label of this property from "fictional universe" to "narrative universe" [2] (last year). --- Jura 22:38, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
- I think all mythical entities should use from narrative universe (P1080) instead of part of (P361). Some of the part of (P361) statements are not clear to me, e.g. the one on Homer (Q6691) (it is probably false or tries to express something that cannot be expressed otherwise). Items that are not strictly mythical (like Troy (Q22647)) should not use from narrative universe (P1080). I think that narrative location (P840) statement on Iliad (Q8275) and Odyssey (Q35160) should suffice for Troy (Q22647). But there is also Mount Olympus (Q80344). One could think about having one item for the real mountain and one for the mythical with the mythical item having from narrative universe (P1080) Greek mythology (Q34726).
- I'm not sure about expressions, symbols or motifs (like Achilles' heel (Q33785)) or cornucopia (Q332682). I think we are missing a property "source of expression" or "coined in", similar to named by (P3938). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 09:08, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
- Notified participants of WikiProject Ancient Greece I personally agree with previous comments, I dislike the use of part of (P361) for mythologies, and Greek mythology specifically. I would also recommend from narrative universe (P1080), this is a good occasion to establish this practice more clearly. --Epìdosis 15:48, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
- I oppose this. The ancient, especially the greek, mythology is so complicated and so often rewritten, that there is not these narrative universe. People who are part of the troy war saga, are probably in a different story arc part of an other saga. A lot is not to subsumate under special sagas, they are just stories. It's correct to sort them under "greek mythology". But where else? To much people have a false understanding of the greek myths and religion. Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:16, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
- +1 Marcus DerHexer (talk) 21:42, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
- What alternative do you suggest? --- Jura 21:56, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Marcus Cyron: what statement you are opposing? I Support using from narrative universe (P1080) too. --Infovarius (talk) 13:43, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
