Interwiki connection[edit]

Wikipedias link tightly to Wikimedia Commons categories, using the so-called “CommonsCat” template (this is critical for tools like the CategorizationBot). These links could be handled by Wikidata in the future, but not any time soon.[1]

Transformation of Wikipedia interwikis disrupted compatibility with Commons interwikis without providing an adequate compensation. There is possible neither to copy a whole block of interwikis from Wikipedia (as was possible previously) or from Wikidata nor to link directly from Commons to the Wikidata item nor to include the Commons link to the Wikidata item page. (An external tool to get "old" interwiki code from Wikidata.)

  • An item on Wikidata corresponds to a category on Commons, that category should be linked. {{Commons}}, {{Commonscat}}, {{Sister project links}} templates etc. (some of them are parts of infoboxes) on Wikipedia projects and interwikis on Commons category pages an Commons gallery pages should be transformed to Wikidata interwikis on Wikidata item pages.
  • Commons categories mix interwikis to Wikipedia articles and Wikipedia categories of identic item. Wikidata item page should integrate article interwikis and category interwikis of the same item.
  • Additionally, selective Commons gallery page(s) (if exist(s)) can be linked from the Wikidata item
  • Assignment of Commons categories through Wikidata items can make work of Commons:User:CategorizationBot more accurate and effective.

Bugzilla and proposals[edit]

Implementation[edit]

  • Property:P373 (Commons category) was created (2013-03-31 by Multichill). However, the Commons link is not displayed in Wikipedia articles and the Wikidata item link and interwikis are not displayed at the Commons category page yet.
  • Dexbot (operated by Ladsgroup) is importing Commonscat links from en:wikipedia to Wikidata as Property:P373. Some connections was imported (without stated source) also by BotMultichill (operated by Multichill).
  • MerlIwBot is importing interwikis from Wikidata to Commons.
  • some national versions of "Commonscat" template at Wikipedias display the Wikidata property P373 as the default Commons category (example at the en wiki, since 25 April 2013).
  • some national versions of "Commonscat" template at Wikipedias compare their attribut with Wikidata and categorize the page according to the accordance/discrepancy/absence of the Wikidata property P373.
  • Commons:Template:On Wikidata (created 2013-04-29‎ by Jean-Frédéric) allow link from Commons page to Wikidata item

How to add interwiki links to Commons[edit]

Infoboxes and information sharing[edit]

  • Information from Creator namespace could be transferred from Commons to Wikidata
  • Information from Category:Book templates could be transferred from Commons to Wikidata
  • Category:Institution templates could be transferred from Commons to Wikidata / may draw information from Wikidata
  • Category:License templates may draw information from Wikidata
  • The "information" templates on the file description pages (information about the file and about the item/manifestation) can be replaced by structured data records maintained as subpages or "attachments" to the page.
  • Wiksource draws information from the file description on Commons, such information should be transformed to meta information about the work/manifestation
  • One canonical photo for every item can be suggested at Wikidata. (Wikidata supports the commonsMedia datatype, meaning properties can link to Wikimedia Commons media − see P18 “image”, P51 “audio” and P10 “video”)
  • Wikidata item description can be used as the default intro of Commons category

Media meta data[edit]

Meta data about media files on commons could be maintained as structured data using the same technology that powers wikidata.org. See commons:Commons:Wikidata for media info for a proposal.

Internationalization[edit]

Multilingual Wikidata item labels and item descriptions can help to internalisation of Commons category names, category descriptions and image descriptions and multilingual searching.

Categorization structure[edit]

Prospectively, the categorization structure (relation between categories) can be supported by Wikidata and shared with other projects (primarily with Wikipedias). It can reflect not only simple hierarchy (subcategory/parent category) but also a kind of the relation (hyponymy, meronymy, location, timing, other attribute, agentive and influence relation, modification or derivation, other affiliation etc.) and allow to reference the relations transparently. Maybe, to replace category system with something based on item properties and file properties will be urged.

Currently planned Wikidata phases handle only with basic items. Issue of cross-item categories and meta categories and their interwikis is not solved yet. Some shift from strict modular principle of categorization to some kind of keyword or tag categorization is discussed sometimes (there is a complication on Commons that one file on Commons can have more relevant subjects).
