Wikidata is turning 10! #WikidataBirthday Distributed birthday events in October 2022

Collaborative celebration video - watch on Youtube or Commons, captions available in several languages

In October 2022, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Wikidata together! For this special occasion, we are creating a collaborative video that will show people from all around the world celebrating Wikidata’s birthday, sharing wishes and appreciation to the Wikidata community, and why they like Wikidata.

The submission phase for the video is now over:It is not possible to send a video anymore. The final video will be released on October 29th on Wikimedia Deutschland's Youtube channel and on Commons.

How to participate

[edit]

We are collecting footage to edit in the final Wikidata birthday video, which will be about 3 minutes long. We would love to receive videos from plenty of people from the Wikidata community to create a nice visual effect and a sense of group and connection.

In order to participate, you simply need to:

  • shoot one or several videos of yourself and/or your community
  • upload it through this form before September 18th (see further instructions below)

You can do it on your own or together with your local Wikidata community. You can take the opportunity of an upcoming onsite event (for example, a Wikimania gathering) to record something with more people.

You don’t need professional equipment: you can record the video with your smartphone. See the technical requirements and tips in the section below for more information.

You don’t need to cut, edit or make any changes to the videos: just send us the raw footage and we will take some parts of it to add it to the final videos.

Content

[edit]

You are free to decide what you want to record and say. Ideally, we would love to see these elements in the video:

  • Say "Happy birthday Wikidata!" in your language
  • Create a little party/birthday scene (for example blowing candles, or anything else you do in your culture to celebrate a birthday)
  • What is Wikidata useful for?
  • What do you appreciate most about the Wikidata community?

On top of that, feel free to pick one or several of these ideas:

  • Tell a short story about how you discovered Wikidata and/or how you made your first edit
  • What is the most exciting thing about contributing to Wikidata?
  • How has the work on Wikidata enriched or influenced you personally?
  • How would you describe the Wikidata community?
  • What is special about the Wikidata community?
  • Say “thank you” to the Wikidata community in a few words
  • What do you think of data and linked data in general?
  • What is the most exciting thing about open data?
  • Film some event/meeting/activity of your community members
  • Film yourself next to a landscape or monument of your city/region
  • Give an example of positive impact that Wikidata could have on the world in the future
  • What do you wish for the future of Wikidata?

Because we have a limited time to process the videos, we kindly ask you to speak in English in the video. Saying “happy birthday” in other languages is welcome.

You are very welcome to include other people in the video, such as other community members or people around you, but you need to make sure that they consent to be on the video. Please avoid filming strangers, people in a crowd, and please don’t film children.

We would like to encourage you to highlight elements of your region or culture that you would like to share with others: landscape, architecture, arts, etc. You are also welcome to set up a little scene with birthday elements: a Wikidata birthday cake, a costume…

Please do not use background music and make sure that there is no sound or images that would result in a copyright infringement or could not be shared under a free licence.

Use of your content

Tips for shooting a video

[edit]

Picture is important but doesn’t have to be perfect. No one expects you to have a professional studio at home. If you have a good camera or a solid external webcam, that’s more than sufficient. Even if you only have a built-in webcam or just your phone, it’s fine too. Rather than how expensive a device is, here are the really important things you should think about:

  • The camera should be stable at eye-level
  • Tutorial:How to build a smartphone tripod
  • Use some books to bring the camera eye-level
  • The camera should frame your face like a portrait framing (head to chest)
  • The lighting should be soft and hit you from a frontal direction
  • Natural light is nice, but avoid direct sunlight to your face
  • Avoid backlighting, and place extra lamps behind the camera to cast light on your face
  • Avoid bumpy patterns in the background but also blank white walls
  • Avoid white blown out highlights in the picture

Sound is crucial for a video for people to understand. Please check the following:

  • Set up in a quiet surrounding, avoid background noise
  • Close doors and windows
  • If you can, use an external microphone
  • Integrated microphones in USB webcams can be pretty good
  • Make sure your microphone´s gain is set correctly and levels aren't too hot

Other tips & further advice:

  • Watch your entire video before sending it to us
  • You don´t have to edit the video, just upload the raw footage
  • Don’t add any background music or jingles

Send your videos
