Motivation

I'd like to better link templates to the categories that they apply. "Category's main topic" and "topic's main category" aren't supposed to be used for this. Please note that a symmetrical property "Category applied by template" should also be created - I'm not sure how to properly do a group proposal but it doesn't make much sense to only have one without the other. •  Question One problem I could see here is that we usually don't have items for very specific versions of templates that are 100% identical across all Wikimedia projects. Often enough, they just group templates with very similar purposes and designs but with different implementations. Especially navigational templates or infoboxes. Which also means that not all versions linked on an item necessarily apply the same categories - or any categories at all. Categories are something that every project maintains for themselves and category structures can vary widely across projects. So how are cases handled where the template used on one WM project adds category A, but the version used on a different project adds category B? Or cases where the category added is dependent on the template parameters used? I'd rather not end up with a situation where such information is added purely based on how a template works on just one project (e.g. the English WP). --Kam Solusar (talk) 20:41, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
