Motivation
[edit]Some place are name after generic name instead of a person. As for place named after species, they often make no sence since the label of the item is often in is scientific name instead of the venacular name. I think it would be nice if we can link it directly to the sense. Fralambert (talk) 13:05, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- You may instead want to create lexemes for these proper names.--GZWDer (talk) 15:37, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- How it would resolve the problem of the source. Since for the « lac du Pékan » only 2 of the 13 lakes have a source about the origin of the name. Fralambert (talk) 00:50, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose I don't think it's correct to say that entities are named after lexemes. Bow River is likely named after bow (Q204948) or some other bow. If you think it's not named after any entity that has the name bow, can you expend on why you think so? ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 17:03, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
- Comment this proposal still seems useful because it solve the ambiguity about which language something has been named after, eg "Bow River" is different from "Bogenfluss" and could help resolve differences in naming things across different languages. You would then simply use the link from a sense to an item: Bow River (Q895385) → Lexeme:L14698#S2 → bow (Q46311) which actually provides more information. --Hannes Röst (talk) 20:55, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- There his also the case of place that use a minotiry language. Lac Amik (Q22601620) use the work amik from Algonquin (Q28092), who mean beaver (Q47542) or North American beaver (Q81056)? Sur I could put directly "beaver", but I am not sure that would make sence to most people. There is also some word in the same language that could change sense with the geography, if I say « Chevreuil » ilt will probably mean L:L28685#S1 (roe deer (Q122069)) in Europe, and L:L28685#S2 (white-tailed deer (Q215887) in North America.
