Data type | Item |
Domain | taxon (Q16521) |
Allowed values | items which are instance of (P31) of geographic region (Q82794) (including subclass of (P279)) |
Example 1 | Lycium ferocissimum (Q151022) → Australia (Q408) |
Example 2 | Cane Toad (Rhinella marina) (Q321087) → Australia (Q408) |
Example 3 | common brushtail possum (Q732477) → New Zealand (Q664) |
Example 4 | Brown tree snake (Q900781) → Guam (Q16635) |
Planned use | Specify weeds and pests which are considered invasive in territorial or geographic regions of the world |
See also | endemic to (P183) |
Motivation
Currently there is no direct way to state that a species is considered a weed or pest in a particular geographic region. This knowledge is widely published by government authorities and other organisations who take responsibility for limiting or eradicating the problems caused by invasive species. Discussion
- Support I support this concept, only suggestion is that when recorded a reliable reference should be included stating it is an invasive species in that region, also the natural regions of the species should be ensured to be complete for this. This is because feral species are often targeted for eradication and I think we have a responsibility to clearly state where a species should not be and where it should be. - Comment: Alike endemic to (P183) this needs a good reference. How could we ensure this, Dhx1? --Succu (talk) 20:13, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- Comment @Succu: Example references are Australia, United States and Weeds Act 1959 (Q7979366). Many governments (at different levels) maintain lists of weeds and pests that are considered invasive/noxious. Scientific papers and books related to ecology would also likely refer to plants and animals being impacted by weeds and pests, as well as control measures for removing these weeds and pests. - You didn't answered my question „How could we ensure this“. Hence Oppose --Succu (talk) 21:06, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
- Comment @Succu: This property proposal doesn't ensure anything. It simply states that an authority/book/whatever deems a taxon to be invasive to an area. Those authorities/books may be wrong or not entirely accurate, but that is what deprecated ranks exist for. Dhx1 (talk) 14:21, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
- Comment @Dhx1: although I am hesitant to change my vote at this stage, I do think @succu: raises a valid point, that also goes to my earlier comment. We do need to ensure the accuracy of this information. I am sorry having experienced them checklists of this nature maintained by government authorities are not good enough. It needs to be primary literature sources. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 20:53, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
- Comment @Succu: @Faendalimas: As an example, Brown tree snake (Q900781) → invasive to → Guam (Q16635), with references including 1. stated in (P248) → Effects of an invasive predator cascade to plants via mutualism disruption (Q37692148), 2. reference URL (P854) → Battling the brown tree snake in Guam and 3. reference URL (P854) → Brown Tree Snake Control Plan. This shows a journal article reference, news article and Government source. Let's assume that another journal article, another news article and a different Government source all dispute Brown tree snake (Q900781) being invasive. In this situation we can use statement disputed by (P1310), sourcing circumstances (P1480), ranks and other properties to capture both sides of the argument, with serious and useful sources.
