Observing time available
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Natural science
Description | The amount of observing time available at a telescope (or other instrument) |
---|---|
Data type | Quantity |
Template parameter | obs-time in en:template:infobox telescope (to replace existing "weather" parameter) |
Domain | Telescopes, but also any other instrument with limited use time available |
Allowed units | Common temporal units, for example minute (Q7727), hour (Q25235), day (Q573). Also units of time unit per time unit, such as nights per year (Q29463499), hour per year (Q29463526) |
Example | McMath–Pierce Solar Telescope (Q56901) → 263 nights per year |
- Motivation
Following from discussion at en:Template_talk:Infobox_telescope#Weather-parameter, this parameter would replace the existing "weather" parameter (which is used in a variety of contradictory ways) with one that is more Wikidata-compatible: a parameter that can be used to indicate the observing time available, whether that's "nights per year" for optical telescopes, or "hours per year" for radio telescopes. It might be good if it could also cope with cases like the cycles for Atacama Large Millimeter Array (Q725364), which are a given number of hours per cycle that vary in time duration per year via the use of qualifiers, but that's a more complex usage.
This will hopefully be the last piece of the puzzle for Wikidata-ifying en:Template:Infobox telescope's parameters! – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mike Peel (talk • contribs) at 22:12, 11 April 2017 (UTC).
- Discussion
- Support I second the proposal as a reasonable replacement for the odd "weather"-property.--*thing goes (talk) 15:43, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

- Support on the units question, you can create your own unit items, "nights per year" for instance if that doesn't already exist, and use that. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:37, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks @ArthurPSmith! I've created nights per year (Q29463499) and hour per year (Q29463526) - could you have a look and see if I've created them appropriately please? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 00:45, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hmm, I'm not sure they are strictly speaking units of time - they are actually dimensionless in principle as they are a time unit divided by another time unit. Other than that I think they should work, yes! ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:39, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
- That's true. Does that mean instance of (P31) should be dimensionless quantity (Q126818), or measured physical quantity (P111) should be, or both? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:54, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
- I would just go with unit of measurement (Q47574). ArthurPSmith (talk) 19:39, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: Done, thanks. :-) Mike Peel (talk) 22:00, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
