Bowers acronym
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Natural science
Motivation
[edit]Bowers acronym is a short name assosciated with a polytope coined by Jonathan Bowers. see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=Bowers%20acronym&title=Special%3ASearch&fulltext=1&ns0=1 , many article include Bowers acronym. some en:Template:Infobox polyhedron use this term, e.g. en:Small_dodecahemidodecahedron. It is a unique identifier for a geometric shape (Q815741). I think we can create a property for this term.

Discussion
[edit]- Support I added a formatter URL, hope that's ok? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:04, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: Some url of geometric shape (Q815741) in https://bendwavy.org/klitzing isn't use bowers acronym. For example, bowers acronym of Tetraapeirogonal tiling (Q7706200) are 'tezt', but url is https://bendwavy.org/klitzing/incmats/o4xinfino.htm ...--[雪菲🐉蛋糕🎂] >梓< [娜娜奇🐰鮮果茶☕](☎️·☘️) 09:22, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
- another example: Infinite-order triangular tiling (Q17077551) → aztrat, link is https://bendwavy.org/klitzing/incmats/x3oinfino.htm . --[雪菲🐉蛋糕🎂] >梓< [娜娜奇🐰鮮果茶☕](☎️·☘️) 09:43, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
- @A2569875: It seems to be more complete than the other sites you list though, where they are wiki's that may use the acronyms for pages but are missing many of the polytopes. Do you think we shouldn't have a formatter URL at all? Or maybe make it a 3rd party formatter? ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:43, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

- Support, an important property for mathematics.--Arbnos (talk) 23:53, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: well-established unique identifiers are always useful to have. However, is there any authoritative source for these? I note that the term "Bowers acronym" gets very few hits on Google. -- The Anome (talk) 16:31, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- I found this in en:Uniform_polyhedron_compound. --[雪菲🐉蛋糕🎂] >梓< [娜娜奇🐰鮮果茶☕](☎️·☘️) 13:20, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: I removed "ready" as I don't see an explanation why this should be using string datatype and not the usual external-id. --- Jura 11:01, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

For example, bowers acronym of Tetraapeirogonal tiling (Q7706200) are 'tezt', but url is https://bendwavy.org/klitzing/incmats/o4xinfino.htm ... ; https://bendwavy.org/klitzing/incmats/tezt.htm is 404 error; bowers acronym of Infinite-order triangular tiling (Q17077551) are aztrat, link is https://bendwavy.org/klitzing/incmats/x3oinfino.htm ; if you go https://bendwavy.org/klitzing/incmats/aztrat.htm will got 404 error ; the symbol “x3oinfino”() and “o4xinfino” () is not a Bowers acronym, it is en:Coxeter–Dynkin diagram. —-[雪菲🐉蛋糕🎂] >梓< [娜娜奇🐰鮮果茶☕](☎️·☘️) 12:40, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- I removed the formatter URL as that seems to be a sticking point. @ A2569875: I've changed the datatype to external-id - I hadn't noticed it was "string" before; if this is really a unique identifier then it should be indicated as such in Wikidata! ArthurPSmith (talk) 14:42, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
