| Planned use | Extending information about universities to include the degrees that they confer. This will help differentiate between doctorate-granting and non-doctorate-granting institutions in Europe. There is a Carnegie Classification for US colleges (for example master's colleges and universities: larger programs (Q23335394) that focuses on varied descriptions (see here, for example, University of Saint Joseph (Q24399). But there is no information about degrees conferred, either for US or European higher education institutions. |

Motivation
As a project in a Master's course on Semantic Modelling in computer science we are looking at how to model degrees granted by institutions. We have set up a WikiProject for this ([1]) and have not been able to find the appropriate property for conferring degrees. This is different from an award conferred by (P1027) some institution. It must be an academic institution that confers a degree, and it is a degree that is conferred. This is also different from a past proposed property "confer to" that would involve people ([2]). - That doesn't really fit. An academic degree is the thing that is conferred, so it is confusing that this is a property. And in the sense that it is listed on academic degree (P512) it is a Wikidata property for items about people (Q18608871). "confers" is not about people at all, but it is about the degrees that a university offers. - And I don't see this! As I wrote above, the academic degree (P512) is *specifically* something that a person has and as I mentioned, this is not about a person at all! It is a connection between a university and a type of degree. I would propose renaming academic degree (P512) to be "has academic degree" and not just "academic degree" in order to make it clear. - Support I suggest splitting entities like Bachelor of Arts in Clinical Psychology (Q17014758) because it holds more than one atomic piece of information, the academic degree (P512) Bachelor of Arts (Q1765120) and the academic major (P812) clinical psychology (Q199906).--Flowantarl (talk) 14:24, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Comment I'm removing "ready" as the description doesn't seem to be matching the samples and I'm not really convinced that the label is optimal. Something like "academic degrees granted" seems closer to the intended purpose.

- It's better. As the values are classes, I'm not that sure about singular.
What is "The academic degree (Q189533) itself should be qualified with an academic major (P812)." meant to say? If it should be a mandatory qualifier for the values, can you add them to the samples? Re: format, see below.
--- Jura 08:59, 12 July 2018 (UTC)- We have found enormous numbers of "Bachelor's degree in" <choose a field> each with an item. If you look at Douglas Adams (Q42), his degree is given as bachelor in academic field. That would permit much better control for queries, as you could easily ask for all universities granting any degree in the specific field. But some universities only grant just bachelor's of arts, not for example, Bachelor of Fisheries Science (Q4838797). Thus I would not make it mandatory, but desirable if the information is available. --WiseWoman (talk) 23:19, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
