One Earth

[edit]

Hi! I was reading the discussion at commons:User_talk:Z3lvs#Regarding_Category:One_Earth_and_its_subcategories. I think you're likely to run into similar problems on Wikidata unless and until you can get everything hooked up. Have you considered proposing a property similar to WWF ecoregion code (P1294)? Is there a stable URL for each region? Bovlb (talk) 21:05, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have created Wikidata pages for a few ecoregion pages. There is not a whole lot of information to them, for an example of what most look like, see the "Honshu Alpine Conifer Forests Ecoregion" page. There are codes associated with each ecoregion, for example "Nihonkai Montane Deciduous Forests" is given EcoID: 671. There is a stable URL for each ecoregion on the One Earth website, but I do not know the best way to integrate it into Wikidata. I think that would be a very good thing to do, if you could provide me with a place to learn how. Z3lvs (talk) 21:35, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can propose a new property at Wikidata:Property proposal/Authority control. I suggest you browse that page (and also Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/24#WWF_ecoregion) and make sure you have the right information available. Bovlb (talk) 21:41, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that someone, not me, already created an identifier on Wikidata for "One Earth ecoregion ID." Is this considered a property?
The ecoregion ID code seems to be based on the One Earth name (ex: nihonkai-montane-deciduous-forests), rather than the EcoID for the same item "671." Personally, I think it seems more appropriate to use the numerical code, but it would certainly be possible to continue in the current format. Z3lvs (talk) 22:11, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good find! I did search for that, but for some reason it didn't show up. One Earth ecoregion ID (P12161)
It is odd that it uses the name and not the identifier. CC @Uchroniste 40 Bovlb (talk) 23:17, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well I can definitely start adding this type of ID to each ecoregion Wikidata page. And I'll continue using the name, just as they originally proposed it. Hopefully that helps to smoothen things out. Thanks for the comment! And if you ever have any more suggestions, I am all ears. Z3lvs (talk) 23:52, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose that I do have one more question. There are existing Wikidata entries for ecoregions, most if not all, are used with the corresponding article on Wikipedia. It seems that they were made for the WWF concept of an ecoregion; on a few of them, someone already additionally placed the One Earth ecoregion ID. Since I've began making One Earth Ecoregion pages, I've had a hard time with deciding to either build on the WWF pages or create new One Earth ones. In this case, I'm wondering whether I should create a new Wikidata entry altogether for all One Earth ecoregions or to build on what already exists, the WWF ones. Though they are very similar, sometimes even exactly the same, there are definitely differences in boundaries with some entries; there are also some discontinued names and new ecoregions. Perhaps you could weigh in? Z3lvs (talk) 00:15, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is a tough one. If a WWF region and a One Earth region have the same definition, then we could put them on the same item, but as you pointed out there are going to be a lot of small differences. Presumably, for the existing WWF regions, the defined region may not correspond exactly to the area covered by a Wikipedia article. For this type of question, I'd suggest that you raise it on WD:Project chat or on a relevant WikiProject. Bovlb (talk) 02:49, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
